Jaffe's response to Calling All Cars reviews; Gamespot gives game a 6.7 |
While David Jaffe is pleased with IGN's and 1UP's review scores of his downloadable game for the PlayStation Network, Calling All Cars, he notes in his blog that he felt Gamespot's review score of 6.7 was unfair. He says in his blog:
I'm not so keen on the GAMESPOT review, and who would be? It simply feels unfair and simply wrong. Granted, why would I not say that? I am the director of the game they are saying is simply "fair". So take my opinion with a grain of salt.
He goes on to say that Gamespot's main criticism of the game - that the single player game was particularly short - was a bit out of place. He says that contrary to Gamespot's opinion, for a ten-dollar game, it has enough play time to warrant its price. He says that it isn't like other small downloadable games like Bejewelled and Hexic where one can lose themselves in it alone for hours on end. He likens Calling all Cars to a different genre of games.
ItÂ’s like a fighting game in that sense: you work thru the single player to learn the game and unlock stuff. And when you get thru one level if you want to get better, up the difficulty. I get thru Tekken and Mortal Kombat single player in 5-15 minutes on default setting. Again, maybe our presentation did not make this clear and it's a fair call that Gamespot would want more from the single player experience. But it's not like I go out and buy Madden or NBA JAM or NBA HOMECOURT cause I'm going to be playing it by myself.
Yes, he does admit in his own blog that perhaps the fault lies with them for not presenting their multiplayer intentions with the game properly. Perhaps he wasn't able to make people understand that their game is a "balls to the wall, trash talking, fun ass multiplayer/party game" that requires, well, other people to play with for maximum enjoyment.
Regardless of how you wish to react to Jaffe's reaction to Gamespot's "unfair" score of 6.7 for Calling All Cars, perhaps he is at liberty to react in that slightly indulgent manner. After all, it IS his blog. Jaffe probably said it best in the closing words of his long-ish post: "Ok gotta run...thanks for indulging me. A more mature designer would say: 'my game is my response' and shut up about it. But come on, this is me :)" And what else are personal blogs for? Where else can one rant, and rave, and pontificate so freely?

This game just doesn't look fun to me. I watched videos of it and it just seems boring. I do like many of Jaffe's other games though such as Twisted Metal and God Of War. I hope his next game on the Playstation Store will be one that will draw my interest.
gamespot is a anti-sony bunch of crapholes, just like G4TV. thats why i like sites like QJ.NET and kotaku where they just report news, unbiased news. the only problem with these sites are the fanboys reading it. lol cant fix that though
Gamespot is well-known to advertizae for Microsoft,it is a part of Cnet which is associated with Microsoft
regardless of wether Calling all cars is a good game or not,it is bound to have a lower score since its Sony
just like GTA version for the PS3 will be bound to have a lower score on gamespot than the 360 version regardless if its technically worse or better
the problem isnt in these sites, its not their fault
the problem is in the naive humans who believe in illusions such as honesty and fairness
the human brain is designed to be biased,if Gamespot is paid by microsoft, they will do their job in promoting microsofts products
its not their fault, its the drones out there who worship other peoples opinions above theirs
Kotaku is not anti-Sony? Your kidding right?
Kotako is kinds biased against sony
Qj is less but i,m sure once this site gets more and more traffic and MS money rolls in,then we will have another Gamespot
Is anyone actually suprised by this score? People have known for a long time that Gamepot supports Microsoft now, so its expected that they will game Sony and Nintendo games crap reviews. (Twilight Princess - 8.9, Motorstorm 7.9, they even gave the improved PS3 version of Oblivion a mark less than the 360 version.)
Firstly, this is a downloadable game, so you cant expect lots of content to be crammed in, but that is not Gamespot's take on it at all. Second, they say that the game can be completed in a short space of time. Well, I can complete Halo 2 in a short space of time too, so what makes that game so special? Mutiplayer! Just like Calling all Cars!!
No one can expect fair reviews for Gamespot anymore, and its not even fair on 360 owners that see a game with an awesome review so they go out and buy it to find it disappointing.
Gamespot has just plummeted in there integrity. I am a member of the site and enjoy the forums but I have given up on their reviews, they mean just as little to me as some member with the name "SuperPokemoneDB Zfan57573" who reviews every game he likes and gives it a perfect 10.
Not only the example of the improved PS3 ver of Oblivion getting a lower score, but one of the ones I'm shocked at is the Score Perfect Dark Zero got (9.0) against Resistance: Fall of Man (8.6) !!! RFOM is a MUCH better game than PDZ. People's defense? PDZ came out earlier, thus GS was impressed with it. THAT BS!! If you can't get over you fandom quick enough to properly review a game then you shouldn't be reviewing games.
Game$pot=Cnet=Micro$oft. GS we know u hate sony so dont try to hide ur fanboyism, BTW ur scoring system sucks
so you never rely on another's opinion before playing a different game? that's either a very expensive way to live or you've never played anything outside your comfort zone.
Calling All Cars looks like crap anyways.. would maybe be good if it was made for Playstation 1. I wouldn't keep any high hopes of it getting good grades.
is the way in which they rate these 'virtual console' titles and things, they aren't worth giving 8 or 9 out of 10... they just aren't! but they put on their rose tinted spectacles, they play for half an hour while nostalgia lasts, and then rate it higher than some of the best games out there... it's preposterous i say!
i like to read the review of a game rather than the score tbh... only if it receives less than a 7 do i assume it's not worth looking at. it's a fair system.
downloadable games should be rated different lets say a downloadable game gets a 9 it shoudnt mean its better then gta or metal gear
Thats why stay with IGN
news sites are not biased unless the reporter includes his own thoughts, which will make it biased. game reviews are always in conjunction to what the reviewer think, there's always things that influence why a reviewer why he/she gave such a score to such a game. all people think different so don't expect a game review to be the same from different person. news websites clearly align themselves to such product if they will be biased to it, if they say they are not biased, it simply means that any biased sounding news is from the reviewer/reporter point of view and not the companies. it good to know that Jaffe accepts this as a lesson, maybe its his fault after all. gamespot's review did impact Jaffe's thinking and maybe he learned to improve more to his product next time.
if you dont rely on peoples opinion about games, let the DEMO speak for itself. hehe just a thought of mine. ^_^
But the game is balls...
literally its boring as hell - I think I'll stick with the Gamespot review and watch some more blu-ray movies - Heavenly Sword and Lair can't get here fast enough -- hey Jaffe STICK to GoW or something...
Gamespot gained my upmost respect when they reviewed Driv3r and gave it a 5.5, because that game sucked. Nearly every review that comes out is scored very well and very honest and doesnt just score it fairly just to 'be gentle' with the fanboys, like what IGN do, thats what makes it a great site. They want to make sure you get your moneys worth when you do invest £40 / $60 in your game.
Oblivion score 9.5 on the PS3 Because it is a polished port of a game thats been available for the last 12 months, like the .1 would make any difference whatsoever, fact is, it's a sweet port of a game thats been on another console AND the PC ... like i said, the .1 makes no difference in that respect.
as for someone mentioning Twilight Princess, that game was scored fairly, if not a bit too overrated. Z:TP is a game that is beating a formula thats been used by Nintendo for the past 10 years, its basically a prettied up version of Z:OoT, it has NO spoken dialogue (and there should have been NO limitations on this like with the GC) and gameplay thats been done the same in 3 previous games spanning over 10 years, it's only the devoted fanboys that get pissed off about it getting an 8.8, just because it says 'Zelda' on the case doesn't automatically get it a 9.0+ score, it'll get added points for that though, if that game was the exact same but not Zelda it would be in the high 7s. they judged the game very fairly. I didnt even mention that it was a port of a GameCube game with tacked on Wii controls too, if it made really really good use of the Wiimote (which it doesnt) then it would have also scored higher. Notice the only Wii game to get 9.0+ was WarioWare Inc. and that is because it makes superb use of the Wiimote and is a very fun (but short) game to play.
as for the Resistance / PDZ comparison, PDZ is the better of the two, Resistance seems too samey and the visuals in HD don't looks half as good as what PDZ did in SD, if i had to compare it visually to another similar game, it would probably be Call Of Duty 2 but more jaggier, it's just not a pretty looking game. I don't rate the graphics in any of the exclusive PS3 games, the best game i've seen is probably Ridge Racer 7, it looks really nice in HD and runs really smoothly.
and this isnt fanboy ***** that i'm chatting, this is my own personal opinion. i own all 3 systems and like them kinda equally, but the 360 is definitely the better system because it has a better game database (the year long headstart really did pay off for them) and better online service. it's fact, only the fanboys don't see that.
... I find it odd that, in GameSpot's actual REVIEWS of Oblivion for the PS3, they basically said that "it's better than the 360 version in every way." But then gave it a score of .1 less than the 360 version. This makes no sense to me. If it's "better," should it not get a "better" score?
I will also say that it takes a real fanboy to try and say that LoZ:TP getting an 8.9 is fair and that PDZ is better than Resistance. You'd have to be really REALLY biased, close-minded idiot to believe those things.
Not that it matters. We'll all play what we enjoy playing. And if somebody would seriously rather play Perfect Dark Zero than Twilight Princess... well, that's their loss, really.
