It has become common practice for publishers and developers to release special collector's edition variants for new game releases. These usually come with freebies, be they downloadable or actual physical products.

The more elaborate ones are usually reserved for the big guns like franchises with a built-in fanbase. Sometimes, companies take a gamble and release such variants for new IPs.
The Twisted Metal franchise, which is finally getting a new entry after six years (three if you count the PS2 port of Twisted Metal: Head On), falls into the first category. That alone makes it a prime candidate for a special edition.
The series' creator, David Jaffe, hopes it doesn't get one though.

I agree with you. I like that there is one version of games that have everything and not several variants that is a hob-logged mess. Also I was thinking of picking up Marvel vs. Capcom 3 but realised that I was getting flashbacks of when I bought Street Fighter 4 and months later they came out with Super Street Fighter 4. It frustrates me how companies suck us dry of money so we could enjoy some good games and now all this stupid stuff that they do to devalue the games like making you pay extra to play online if you bought a used copy or locking the disc to one account only which also takes away the value. Sometimes I think the golden age of gaming is behind us when it was all about pop in the game and just play. Now when you pop in the game you have to make sure everything is updated, and extras paid for to get the full experience.
