TrettonAnd so the much awaited PS3 units arrive tonight! Actually, there are a couple of launch parties to go to, in case you'd like to have a right doze of party, music, some booze probably and of course, next-gen entertainment. New York is the venue for the east coast while SanFran lights up the west. Even at the time of this writing, we are quite sure that Sony officials and executives are busy trying to stay on their seats as the whole world awaits the biggest console launch yet.

It was a good thing then that badam, who has always been a good contributor, tipped us about a last minute phone conversation with SCEA Exec. VP Jack Tretton. While there are no new information or shocking revelations were revealed by the official, it is nice to have a peek at his current thoughts. Amidst ambivalent feelings, Tretton above all still feels confident that Sony will win this phase of this console war:

I don't see any reason to believe that we shouldn't be. We started in this business by selling upwards of 100 million consoles of the original PlayStation. Here we sit, six years-plus later on PS2 and we're 30% ahead of where we were on original PlayStation at that point in its life cycle. We attracted an extremely large and loyal fan base. Layer on the technology that's in the PlayStation 3, and we have every reason to believe we'll grow that audience yet again.

PS3Asked when they'll be able to overtake Xbox 360's sales, Tretton cooly answered "the minute we exceed their production and distribution [capabilities]", signifying the company's confidence in dominating the console wars.

For now though, Tretton knows that they have to focus first on the launch and how to meet current demands. "Supply is a moving target, but demand is also a moving target. If nobody's interested, we'll catch up on the 18th. It could be as late as spring before units sit on store shelves for more than a matter of seconds," reflected Tretton.

Being a big fan of statistics himself, Tretton then went on to discuss matters in terms of numbers. When asked about the promised PSOne downloads for the PSP, the official answered, "We intend to get some out before the end of the calendar year. They'll be playable first for PSP, and then for both PSP and PS3 before the end of the year."

Regarding the backwards compatibility issue, he commented "we've reported problems on only 200 of the 8000 PlayStation 1 and 2 games. I would challenge the average consumer to say that there are significant problems with any of the games in their library."

We can safely say that Sony's quite on track with their plans of dominating the market, but it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be smooth sailing for them - it never will be. And we're sure the hottest console, at least hardware-wise, around welcomes the challenge. That's how the big boys win 'em wars.
