Jack Tretton: where Sony wins, the industry wins

Jack Tretton - Image 1Speaking with Forbes in his latest interview, SCEA president Jack Tretton went all out in support of the PlayStation brand and how its success drives the industry forward. To make a long story short, the SCEA big man believes that the industry, as a whole, would be so much better off when it's Sony on top of the food chain.

To make the short story a bit longer, read on and get the details.

"We like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry," Tretton said. "...because we have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences," he added, referring to Microsoft and Nintendo as the competitors.

Of course, there was always time to talk more about Microsoft:

I love their money. I think they can afford to be more patient, we're very profit driven, we're interested in a return on investment in a fairly short period of time. I think Microsoft's willing to go at it from a very steep curve in terms of profitability.

As for Nintendo:

Nintendo is almost the polar opposite. They know what they do well and they stick to it. They deliver a casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience that's very enjoyable after 20 years. And they make money, they print money. Their profitability is their key focus and features are nice but profitability is king and I think that is enviable.

Sony has always been proud of their PS3 system and has always maintained that it's currently the best that the industry has to offer. In fact, it's Sony has made it known that growing the market is one of its goals, not simply limiting themselves to existing hardware.

It's been a while since we've had an exec go in-depth about the industry, and those were certainly big words from Jack Tretton. Sound off below and let us know what you think.

Next gen development would be in the dark ages if it wasn't for Microsoft. Sony has pretty much ripped Xbox Live and added no innovation itself. And developers are only starting to make decent money off the platform. They have definately turned the corner so hopefully the platform will now become more defining.

Let me add on to what he is really saying:

"....we're very profit driven, we like to ***** up our customer's consoles through firmware updates, that is why we have an agreement saying any firmware updates that ***** up your console is not our fault, we're interested in a return on investment in a fairly short period of time. "

Er..... you really do not know what you are talking about do you? yet you seem to think its acceptable for MS to have the very attitude that you are claiming sony has!

Get a life you tw@t!!

by Pinski - 2009-10-07 11:25
» its amazing how wrong you are.....

if Sony is still losing money on every system they sell they are dependent on the games they sell....so if they kill the system they just lose money. good try though what else you got?

by HIDEO KOJIMA - 2009-10-07 11:39
» It's amazing how people don't use their brains....

Did I say Sony is losing money? They don't lose money for killing off theirs systems and do you know why? People will pay Sony for repairs or they will go out and buy another PS3 and if they don't pay Sony for either of those, so what, they already bought the console.

I'm sorry, unlike you, I do have a life outside of gaming. Yours just revolves around brown nosing Sony with a PS3 stuck up your pu$$y.

» LIES!

first if all its free, its better, and im pretty sure home is original unlike the 360 NXE. its cuz of dumbass people like this guy that xbox is so popular. They ripped off sony, took their processor, took the miis, took the motion control, what else do u want. 360 has nothing good going for it. the only reason they are still alive is because they are genuine ripoff artists that put all their money on ads instead of quality

by Pinski - 2009-10-07 19:46
» ...

you say they will buy another console but again if they are losing money on every system they sell they are in fact losing more money right? but maybe for the refurbish ones they do make money

by the by - 2009-10-07 20:56
» ok hideo

I apologise for calling you a tw@t,

thats something thats actually useful!!

@ gogeta85....it was meant as humour, and I can't really be bothered discussing it, as I've bigger fish to fry!!

@ Hideo, let us know when you get off of your mums teet and we'll have this argument when/if you've grown up a bit!!

by the by - 2009-10-07 21:31
» I would like to apologise

to the rest of the site for my aggressive tone, but this dude seems to go through almost every thread looking to stir it up, if there was an ignore button i would use it!

I am a ps3 fanboy, and proud of it, I love my console of choice and the shedload of games I own but I question Hideos due to him always being on the PS3 section stirring it up, it makes my blood boil!

so anyway, I'm not going to continue arguing with this loser, as I'm too old and long in the tooth!
