Jack Tretton in defense of the PS3

EGM - Image 1It is no secret that the PlayStation 3 has a lot of detractors. With that said, we guess Sony has every right to defend its turf and one such stalwart is SCEA CEO and President Jack Tretton. He recently gave an interview with magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) to be published in its forthcoming March issue.

Right from the get-go, Tretton is all business as he mentioned that some expectations for their console are a little unrealistic. He attributed this to the PS2's success, saying Sony's receiving these rather harsh comments because it is in the leadership position. He lamented,

If we were a distant third in the platform race, people would have a warm spot in their hearts for the good old days of PlayStation and they'd actually root for us to get back on top. But I don't know if we want to pay the price to get that kind of love.

The senior official then talked about the Blu-Ray format. According to him, Sony is actually amused people are thinking that efforts on pushing this format is being done by the company single-handedly. He explained that Sony merely complements it:

It's up to the consumer electronics companies. Blu-Ray is a great value for consumers as a movie format, but most importantly it's of value to the gamers. Blu-Ray does wonderful things for the development community and what they can bring to consumers on Blu-ray. That's something that no other machine offer.

Jack Tretton - Image 1Speaking of which, it has been already reported on numerous occasions before that developers are actually afraid to work on the PS3 because of pricing. Tretton said that Sony is giving more development opportunities for the PS2, the PSP, as well as downloadable online games. But regarding PS3 development, he explained,

I don't think that's a realistic opportunity for somebody right out of college. Development is the biggest investment we've made in employees on a worldwide basis. Because at the end of the day, you need that compelling software to make your hardware relevant.

Lastly, Tretton reiterated that, as a company, Sony doesn't think that pricing for the PS3 is reasonable. Tretton maintained that PS3 offers almost everything every consumer is looking for in an entertainment system: great gaming, free online play, Blu-ray movie playback, being able to go online and surf the Internet, the ability to download your pictures, download your videos, rip your music to it.

Historically our platforms have staying power. Not three years, not five years, but 10 years. So are you making an investment for the next 45 days, the next year, the next five years, 10 years? Because that would have a little bit of determination as far as the value.

I agree, I'm not paying $250 for a Wii that will probably be outdated in a year or so if it's not already. It still uses CD's as the main media format!!!

PS3 is a $500-$600 console that will easily last past 2012-2014. Blu-Ray will not be outdated anytime soon, unlike DVD's or CD's. I don't want to buy a console from MS every 2.5 years...

» Finally someone with common sense

Thank you "a", you r teh winar of the internet.

It's fine if people don't want to pay for a $600.00 console, but you can't deny the potential it has to last for a good decade. If more people believed in that potential, the PS3 will rise to the top since more developers will have faith in the system.

So true Jack I couldn't have said it better myself just do your best to keep some exclusives. But otherwise Sony has been doing everything right!

» hmmm...maybe

but why not wait? No harm in actually seeing if it'll last. and if it does...tons of games will be out by then.

» wtf

ps3 "easily last past 2012-2014", wtf do you smoke, isn't it every 4-5 years new gen consoles roll in.... get your head out of $ony's a$$

as for sony's consoles for lasting 10 years, tell that to my psx that i had to turn upside down to play games without freezing and my ps2 that won't display any picture a week before ps3 launch, i'll note that i got my ps2 at launch but come on, 10 years.... be realistic, stop spewing crap

watch them come out with another format in the next 2 years, blu-ray will be outdated before it even lifts off

tretton wants me to fork 700 bucks over to play genji???? i'm not going to pay that much to launch games

the wii uses dvd's by the way

once again... stfu and start pushing developers to make some decent games already, words don't make me want to buy, i want stuff that wows me and right now the ps3 doesn't, sure stuff looks pretty like the guy above me says, why not wait till good stuff comes out, then you'll have something GOOD to play and price will be less that what it is now

» I would NOT buy a console YET !

I would NOT buy a PS3 or 360 in March as it looks like both machines are about to be fitted with smaller, cooler chips which also means quieter fans.

So in effect if I buy either machine now I will be getting the noiser and hotter MK1 whereas the MK2 are soon being released and proberly a little cheaper to.

» No

Hmm Blu Ray maybe in the future BUT at the moment the fact is HD-TV is nothing more than a large EXPENSIVE PC monitor that can also show non HD tv badly.

You look at terrestrial,Fre eview or sattalite programs on HDTV and they look terrible, all blocky and the closer you get to the TV the worse it gets, imagine converting an analogue video tape onto a dvd and playing it back on your pc monitor its the same effect.

So HD-TV is great if you have the money to spend on something just to play a game console or watch a movie BUT forget it if you want to watch TV programs at least with a half decent picture.

And HDTV transmissions are not going to be coming anytime soon unless you pay big $.

» ok

so i also did experienced you have on ps1 and my exp on ps2 is far more worse because my ps2 lens stop reading dvd's after 1 year only. but dont you think/hope the blu-ray drive will last long as almost a decade? i have a ps3 now, guess what? we play ps3 games and you cant! that's just it, all stubborn people that despise ps3 misses all the ps3 exclusive games. if you despise say for example the Wii or x360, you just simply lose the ability to play games for it. my take on it is, i like every system, i'll buy every one of them, the ps3 just came in first on my list due to Linux and 1080p capability and once drivers for its RSX has been created it'll even beat the multi thousand dollar PC's. isnt that a great value? then later i'll return my cousins Wii and buy 1 for myself (just to play twilight princess/mario galaxy). and i'll also buy a used xbox360 jsut to play with dead rising (yes its the only xbox360 game on my head, i play FPS on PC not on consoles). anyways goodluck on all consoles, yes all of them, more success means more games for us.

» oh

where do you get these ideas?

mortal kombat 1 and 2?

if you want your ps3/x360 to be quieter and cooler, mod it with a liquid cooling system. or place it inside the refrigerator, i wonder if the wireless controler still works though. oh and moisturerizing will occur hehehe.
