It's not that bad! PS3 price negatively overhyped

Remember the PS2. Remember the product cycle! March: We told you about the long lifespans of the PS1 and PS2. The PS3 looks like it also has a long lifespan. August: Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai told you that Sony thinks in long-term cycles. This means they have a plan for the PS3 that may extend for a decade (or at least half a decade?). So with these things in mind, let's put the PS3's future into perspective.

behold... it is Kaz...Stan Beer over at iTWire reminds us that when the PS2 was released, people complained about the price. But the PS2 still sold very well. Of course, it's different this time around: there's competition from the Xbox 360 (which "has a respectable range of titles") and the Nintendo Wii ("a novel gaming experience"). But Beer believes that it'll all turn out OK.

We tend to agree with his vision of the future:
  1. The PS3 will launch in Japan and the U.S. then Australia and Europe. The West is a rich market, and there will be buyers who won't mind the price of the PS3.
  2. Some will buy it right away. It has Blu-ray and it can play PS2 games.
  3. Some will wait. They expect that the PS3's price will eventually drop (like it did with the PS2; read the articles I mentioned above). Some may buy a Wii while they wait for the PS3's price to come down and for more games to be released for the PS3.
  4. Eventually, people will buy the PS3.
Why do we want to agree? Because Sony has proven that it can handle long-term planning. The PS1 and PS2 proved that. Sony keeps telling us that, but unfortunately some analysts keep trying to read the future that they forget the past: Sony has done it before and might actually do it again. Which is why we have such warm and fuzzy feelings when we read Stan Beer's article, because there are analysts who aren't falling prey to the negative price hype:

A number of market analysts are saying that the first year of sales does not determine the success of a console. The sales cycles of the PS1 and PS2 have already demonstrated that. ... If the PS3 follows the path of the PS2, and Sony gets its way, the cycle of successive price cuts and an ever growing library of PS3 games will continue for about five years until PS3 is a fraction the price it is today.

i dont think the ps3 is over priced no matter what anybody saysl..... the perfect example of this is that fact that people WILL go on ebay and pay in excess of 2,000 for a ps3. you cant sell something for 2,000 if there isn't demand for it.

its not overpriced because when u think about it logically there is no way sony can lose this game . the amount of deveopment that has gone into the ps3 can not be matched by an other console, because no other compan has the balls to invest so much in a market where they dont have an garuntee of success.

microsoft have put out a decent console which is perhaps comparable to the snes or the megadrive of its day it not cutting edge its just the most economically viable console the could have made because they are unsure of how well the will do. Sony on the other hand are putting in as much technology as possible because the want the sstem to be at or near the cutting edge in even 3 or 4 years when the price will drop to half what it is now and people will still be impressed with the system and even more so because of the huge amount of games available on it at that time . and the games will be cheaper and affordable for all .

in the meantime , before the poor people get on the sony ps3 rollercoaster there are the illions of gaming enthusiasts that will bu the system because its been 6 years since the last one and buing a console after 6 years is a prett long time . is the ps3 worth $500 ? try asking if its worth about $80 a year and u will realise it is.people spemd more on footwear than that.

lets no forget he far east . noone is buing the 360 . what console o u hink they are going o buy ? the wii is a great product bu people arent waiting for he wii . it not current gen , its already lagging by half a gen , its good but its not on the bleeding edge of whats possible. its different .

he ps3 however is .....well... i ill stop here because ive lost intrest.

I was going to get a PS3, but the retarded price made me change my mind and get a Wii instead. I'm not planning on buying a PS3. This is not an unusual scenario. You will see people going for the far less expensive 360, inferior as it is.

Too little, too late.

in Canada the PS3 20GB is only $50 more than the 20GB 360. I don't think the ps3 is overpriced, but I think in Canada the 360 is! people in Canada will probably want the PS3 since it's only $50 more.

# sony doesn't have what it takes this time aroundGuest 2006-10-19 10:54
ah but saying the PS2 was expensive when it came out and saying the PS3 is expensive are two different things, if you buy a premium PS3 you are spending twice the amout you paid for a PS2 on launch day, thats a big difference. for controllers, announced earlier today, as well as for the ps2 memory adapter to use your game saves on your PS3, and if you want to actually get some standard functions from the blueray player you have to drop another for the PS3 remote which won't even be out on release day.

every other console next gen console is cheaper as well, and some people like the sound of blueray, but alot of people don't care about it at all, it isn't even the standard, and if it fails, you spent an extra 0+ on a console that has blueray which doesn't help you at all, if it doesn't win the media war. mind you dozens of media's from sony over the last 20 years have come out, and not a single one has won, it wasn't because there media's weren't superior, they pretty much always where, but it was the fact that they weren't a ton better, and the price point has always been way to high on there media's.

early reviews of the PS3 controller are very negative, it has no good launch titles and the president of sony said that the PS3 will not have over 20 launch titles on release day, plus there aren't any good games coming out for a long while. also companies are jumping ship, including companies like square enix and said that they are going to put out games on all consoles and not support the PS3 to much because they think it could lose.

sony has an uphill battle, and they have never had so much go wrong, i really don't think they will come out on top this time, if they do it will be close, none of this 80 million more consoles sold than competitors, maybe 1 or 2 million max.

This is a good analysis! If you can include stuff that will make this relevant to the PSP audience, you can try to submit this as to my.qj.net. Although my.qj.net is supposed to be for PSP news, Sony news and analyses can be posted as off-topic if they're very good or very relevant. :)

# PS3 is priced just rightVietone 2006-10-19 12:35
Fact being people are making more money then they did 5 years ago.

The System will sell millions more then the Xbox360 or the Wii. Theres no stopping it. More people want the PS3 no matter what the cost and those ebay buyers who spend 1000+ just for the console have proven that.

the PSP hasnt been reduced in price (at least in Australia) since its launch. They are now offering a free game with the PSP but still at the same price. So i think people who are going to wait for a price drop may be in for a rude shock.

# PRICE JUST TOO MUCHGuest 2006-10-19 13:25
i am never going to buy a ps3 with that price 600$ with tax 650$ and the games will be 100$ and its not even going to be worth it maybe the first five minutes thats all and there games arent going to be that good

Xbox 360 will have a big weapon HALO3

# i agree price is to muchGuest 2006-10-19 13:32
well there were 360's that sold on ebay for that and alot more, so i don't really see why people say that shows anything, because people payed pretty outrageous amounts on ebay or bundles at video game stores. sure people make more money know, but people's incomes have not increased 2 fold. there are no good launch titles, there are hyped ones, that are hyped only by PS3 fanboys, no console is going to sell 100 million this time around, maybe around 50 million if they are lucky.

nintendo is back in the game, even if the Wii's graphics aren't that great, and it will rack up sales in japan, the 360 will continue to sell in the US because all that american gamers seem to care about is fps's, which the 360 has and is getting more of.

when the Wii comes out it has zelda, something nintendo has never had available at the launch of one of there consoles. the Wii will sell. and so will the 360.

there will be a strong initial showing of sales for the PS3, those are the people that have to have it when it comes out, after that i really think that the sales will slow down dramaticly unless there is a price drop, something every video game developer says has to happen early in 2007 if the PS3 is to stay in the race.

theres no point of coming out with the PS3 because whent the PS1 came out it was amazing for its times then PS2 wich was unbelievable and now PS3 doesnt have half as much differnce then the PS2. Look at GT4 and GT 5 they look the same but 5 is high def. I think the difference between PS2 and 3 is that 3 has high definition wich makes everything look better. if your gonna come out with another console make it unbelievable.Only some PS3 games looke amazing like Metal gear and Killzone also fight night round three. Also who thinks that the players on madden on 360 look like clay.Unreal

Though it probably won't be alot of people, I too was just turned off by the price. I don't think I'm supporting Sony this generation. Some people like roy will do it still, but I got a 360 and it's not bad at all. I'm also gonna get a Wii as it won't be damn near impossible to get one.

I don't think the price is over hyped, I just hope this isn't a Dreamcast. Too ahead of it's time.

on day one. Nintendo has a very good chance now of regaining back market share and preparing for the generation after this upcoming gen. Sony will obviously lose alot of market share, but I am still confident it'll pull in first place barely.

And yea...FPS is like the only game Microsoft can understand. But it's only understandable to come from a computer company where PC gaming (if not a MMO) is FPS.

# are you really sure?Guest 2006-10-19 16:49
spending twice? PS2 core version has a $499 price tag. a lot of people have been debating for the price tag already. so they knew what they are getting once they buy a PS3 and not XBOX 360.

imho, bluray will be used primary for games and secondary for movies. you won't feel it right now, but year after year SONY will push developers to create games greater than DVD9. developers have been in their comfort zone for so long (example: EA), they need to think outside the box. and we will see this result first in a RPG and Action Adventure game. and how would you know that people don't care about bluray? can you show us some surveys? majority of XBOX 360 owners might not need a new media player. but after 3 years, you guys will realize that once consumers start adapting what media is the right for them (bluray or hd-dvd)....bluray will have a major lead because millions of PS3 owners owns it.

PS3 controller negative? it might be true, still i need to get it in my hands to give out my verdict. about not good launch titles? hmmm...most of the people who say this owns a XBOX 360. but if you haven't bought any next gen system just like me...this line up is way better than any next gen launch in history. and sorry to disappoint you but i look for games that i have grown and love like MGS and Final Fantasy series and Japanese games. PS3 wont lose, majority of these companies will still develop for the PS3, and a lot of FPS games are being ported now to the PS3.

heck, microsoft is so scared right now that they are the one who's doing the catch up (example: hd-dvd add on and 1080p games). i won't be suprised if they don't hit the 10 millions mark until 2008. PS3 and Wii will make the most noise this year and the years to come.

I've already seen a flaw in this new comment system. As you know there are a lot of Xbox fanboys trolling around teh PS3 forums. Any comment posted with any positivity towards Sony is voted down in stars so you can't see it by default. I went over some of the hidden comments and most of them sound resonable. I bet mine will get voted down too now.

Anyways, back to the subject. I think the price is high but I believe it's justified through what I've seen from TGS. Before TGS I was a bit iffy about the PS3 as many were, but after the great showing at TGS many have come around and changed their mind. Of couse its all up to preference. I'm not even going to try to attempt to get one at launch. I'll probably wait until next year when its more readily available, any hardware problems fixed, and hopefully a price drop by then.

The way people are acting is as if the PS3 will always be 600 bucks. They are already dropping the price in Japan and its not even out yet. Like the article says, people will likely wait and get a Wii or something.

I dont think its over priced. I think you r getting your moneys worth. and for blu-ray I dont think of it at a movie format. I think its just a ps3 format. look at the old systems. every system had its own format. you dont have to buy movies for it. its mainly for developers to make bigger and better games. as far as price n64 games started at 60$.

please dont mention Halo. if it werent for Halo, there would be much more diversity between gamers. instead, if someone brings up video games, it becomes "halo this, halo that". i am part of the .00000000001% of gamers that dont like halo
