Interview with Phil Harrison

Ó

PhilAn interview was held with Sony-Executive Phil Harrison by Spiegel Online.  The interview hits every little nook and cranny of the hot issues of the PS3. And even MySpace for some God-forsaken reason.

In the interview, Spiegel Online brought up the fact of the PS3 possibly "copying" the Wii with the motion sensitive controllers. In response Phill Harrison said  "It's a little stupid, if you don't mind me saying so. When we launched Playstation in 1994 we introduced the concept of real time computer generated 3-D graphics for the first time. That was the innovation that drove the platform. When Nintendo released the N64 in 1996 and they had real-time CG 3-D-graphics, did you hear us say, 'Nintendo, you've stolen our idea?' Of course not...

Later on in the interview he did state that practically all of the first year PS3 games will uses the motion sensitivity in some way or another. This being a big plus for the PS3 in the console wars.  Also later on in the interview he goes on to say that the Blu-Ray discs will have no need for copy protection due to the massive size of the files. Which when thought about, does make a good deal of sense.

But then, if you didn't think the article wasn't funny enough, Phil then goes and uses Myspace as an example, a role model, to how he envisions the PS3's networking should be like.

» This guy is a brilliant guy, dont underestimate him

He didn't climb up the Sony ladder for no reason. This guy is very bright and perhaps the only Sony exec that doesn't BS on a regular basis. Of course all game company execs BS on a regular basis.

I don't see the point of accusing and bickering about Sony stealing or not stealing motion sensing. If you don't adapt to innovative ideas that work, you will be left behind. This is what happen to Nintendo. Their stubborn and obsolete way of thinking didn't allow them to chase after many of the innovations happening in the industry just because they thought they were the only people that could do so. This caused them to be left in the dust.

MS is not a great company by any means but they have done a great job and do can you guess why? They have copied Sony in almost every single way. Do you see Sony sticking to MS/Nintendo's level and saying "MS you're a bunch of Copycats". No you don't. I give at least that much to Sony. They don't use FUD and don't belittle themselves to petty remarks.

» phil sucks

this guy is the biggest bs of all time. in about every interview he has ever had he kisses the interviews @$$ and agrees to what ever feature the ps3 will have on it. blu-ray will have copy protection. think about, they will have bluray burners for pc, and cant you just take the iso and make a new one? phil you need to actually not look like a virgin and maybe i would like you a little more.

he sunk to their level by glorifying himself. he just praised himself. "they did, but look at us we didnt". that pig. sony needs to stop being so arragont and maybe i would like them.

» Number 2 is an rectal cavity

Ok we all know he is an ass but do you honestly think he looks like a virgin??? i mean he looks like every gay hooker i ever saw..besides you know why viagra isnt for women?? because they already have the most powerful aphrodisiac and that's money! This guy has a lot of it.. i learned in algebra that money=*****..its science..if you make 100,000 dollars a year that means you could have a level 10 woman..if you make 50,000 you get a level five...and to all the ladies reading this the level i am referring to is the "whore-skank-slut ratio" if you are broke you get a genuine woman..if you are rich you get paris hilton...so if you look at phil's check book he probably has atleast 50 skanks in his basement tied up to his expensive central air unit that air conditions his house that has 3 zip codes..

» Although i respect your taste cooljay, I completely disagree however.

"this guy is the biggest bs of all time."

I think that's Peter Moore who spends more time bashing, trash talking, and downplaying technology than actually talking about what MS brings to the table.

"in about every interview he has ever had he kisses the interviews @$$ and agrees to what ever feature the ps3 will have on it."

This line doesnt make much sense. Most people would agree that interviews like this are not about kssing the interviewer's ass but more so on not saying anything that will be taken out of context. Why wouldn't he agree to every feature the PS3 has? Does the ps3 have a blu-ray? Phil: yes it does. Cooljay: You suck phil

"blu-ray will have copy protection. think about, they will have bluray burners for pc, and cant you just take the iso and make a new one?"

Ok this I can forgive you as a lot of people just dont know technology as well as they think. I teach CS, so I guess I can try and explain: Yes Blu-Ray will have copy protection but what Phil was referring to was HDCP copy protection which prevents you to hooking up a analog device that takes the movie feed and record it on that device. The analog hole as they call it. After a person grabs this he has to converted to digital which it a mighty long process (days I reckon for a HD movie). He can then record it with his burner. Chances of the average consumer having this equipment are about 0. The key here is that if people do upload them, those video files will be so large that it wouldn't be practical. For example, in BitTorrent it might take months before you get your precious movie file by that time you you might want to just rent it.

"Phil you need to actually not look like a virgin and maybe i would like you a little more."

Your personal taste in Men shouldn't skew your opinion on thier abilities. I think you should like him for the fact that he's one of the brightest men in the industry. Sony might make him the CEO of SCE one day.

"he sunk to their level by glorifying himself. he just praised himself. "they did, but look at us we didnt". that pig. sony needs to stop being so arragont and maybe i would like them."

No he gave an example (there are many more). The reason why he has to resort to this is because everyone is making a huge deal but easily forgets the past. for example MS is pointing countless fingers at Sony saying that they are just copying Nintendo yet about every single thing MS has done has been an exact replica of Sony's strategy. Again, you don't see Sony making a big deal out of it.

» i was refering to,

i was refering to how he agreed to homebrew and linux, and upgradable hdd.

do you really think sony would let millions slip by them when homebrew makers put out FREE products and dont have to pay sony a thing? if someone makes a great game for free on the ps3, gamers wont buy sonys games untill they finish the free game, which will hurt sony's $70 dollars a game business.

and if sony though homebrew was so great, why did they stop it on psp? its not like you could run iso's with the gta exploit, so why stop it?

Linux would be emulated at best or you would have to recompile all of your programs for the ps3. either that or sony will put out their version, which would be similar to the very unusefull ps2 linux.

and as said before by other people, how can you have an upgradable hdd that can be upgradable to ANY size(as said in one of the first phil interviews after e3)? phil said(and these are the exact words from this site), "You can put in any drive that you like, it is a computer after all." its impossible without sony putting out their own hdd because it would 1. void the warranty putting in connecters and stuff, and 2. lose sony money.

» Phil is an arsehole

You're right Phil, God did steal your idea of man, and water, and Earth. Your right, the Playstation was WAY before Doom, the Playstation came before games were even thought of. You DID spend more than 2 weeks in a hotel room dreaming up the idea of a motion sensitive controller and had the idea WAY before Nintendo did. No Phil, I didn't 'steal' your wife, I had been banging her WAY before you had even met her. I think the whole idea of adultery is, in your words, 'pretty stupid really.' I downloaded a PSP ISO tonight thinking of you.

by cooljay - 2006-06-01 07:45
» i was just thinking that.

i was just thinking about how Doom was released in 1993 and the ps came out in 1994... thats why phil cant complain, because he copied pc's lol.

by RastaDator - 2006-06-01 09:05
» Linux

will NOT be emulated, that is a nonsense. Linux has been heavily modified in order to run and manage PS3 gear. Even more, Linux must be capable to run several processes at same time, manage memory properly, etc etc. Obviously a proper recompiling of ports of legacy software will be necessary, I hope Sony lets you do that. If so, I ll buy no one but two PS3 (one for running math calculus and the other for watching movies and gaming).

To all BluRay/PS3 haters, look at this link:

are they putting a gun to your head and telling you to buy it?

it's your choice, and if you can't afford it, then you're probably not the market they were aiming for.

please shut up.

Whining is never good when there is a better option to actually PUT UP with it.

$600 isn't that bad.

In Australia like here, we have to pay $1000

that's $140 more USD than the US price.

but I'll still buy it.

Why?

it's the same price as a mac mini here.

and I see it as that.

something that will replace my old PC and at the same time, let me play decent games.

if you can't? please don't even bother posting how poor you are

by TheProfessor - 2006-06-01 11:16
» Again I am force to correct a few minor things

"do you think sony would let millions slip by them when homebrew makers put out FREE products and dont have to pay sony?"

if someone makes a great game for free on the ps3, gamers wont buy Sony's games until they finish the free game, which will hurt Sony's $70 dollars a game business. "

99% of free homebrew games are worth exactly that, nothing. It takes a lot of time, people and effort to create great games. I dont think anyone is worried. If that were the case gamers would just play flash games on their PCs and wouldn't buy consoles. We demand more, and that's why there is a market for consoles and graphics cards. Also, I think $60 games are more like it.

"and if sony though homebrew was so great, why did they stop it on psp? its not like you could run iso's with the gta exploit, so why stop it?"

Actually there was an ISO loader with the GTA exploit, it just didn't support a lot of games. Sony doesn't hate homebrew trust me, they actually know that the homebrew scene has help PSP sales. From the 1% of homebrew that is very valuable, about 99% is for playing copied games aka pirating. Sony learned quite a bit from this experience and I am sure they will handle it much better with the PS3.

"Linux would be emulated at best or you would have to recompile all of your programs for the ps3. either that or Sony will put out their version, which would be similar to the very unusefull ps2 linux."

Linux isn't hardware, you don't emulate it. Yes, you will have to recompile Linux apps not included for PS3 but fortunately it only has to be done once (like any new architecture supporting Linux). People will surely open up websites where you can download PS3 binary versions of those applications. I doubt the average person will ever have to compile anything. PS2 Linux wasn't successful because of the adoption. First, very few PS2 owners had hard drives and second those that did not install Linux. PS3 will come with a HD included and Linux already installed. Instant adoption.

"and as said before by other people, how can you have an upgradable hdd that can be upgradable to ANY size(as said in one of the first phil interviews after e3)? "

PS3 is following the standard 2.5 Serial ATA hard drive interface. Yes you can buy a third party hard drive and install it. I doubt it will be easy due to you having to mirror your old drive and transfer the data therefore the average person wont even bother.

"void the warranty putting in connecters and stuff, and 2. lose sony money"

Would using your USB keyboard void your warranty? no, well same difference. Would Sony lose money if you used a USB mouse and keyboard or even worse if you buy a non SONY TV. Sony doesn't lose money they just don't make any extra. Imagine if PS3s only worked with Sony TVs.

'in 1994 we introduced the concept of real time computer generated 3-D graphics for the first time.' .... Owned!

all this crap about copying each other is ridiculous.... so fair enough to say... every console that had 3d after the playstation... copied sony. Same Principle, and therefore... owned.

Most of you posters have no idea what your on about... your on a little mission to show the world that you know everything... but most of you make fools of yourselves... instead of you Wii and 360 fanboys trolling a PS3 website why don't you worry about waving your arms around to play mario or better yet, sit on your asses and play your awesome AAAAA+ games oh wait... there aren't any.

Obviously most of you know that the PS3 will ***** on the Wii and 360... which is why your so offencive toward the console... and honestly you should be... coz i'd hate it if the PS3 was the only console i loved and then M$ slammed it... again.... but wait - that'll never happen.

So really... why waste posting space on stuff that isnt even true, stupid and well... fanboyish... nubs

Play the game and not the hardware.

by cooljay - 2006-06-01 11:59
» as i remember

when the 360 came out all the ps3 fanboys came out and laughed at the disc scratching and under supply of consoles. so this makes you better how?

and sony would loose alot of money if they allowed open hdd... keyboards and mice cost like $10 hdd cost $60-600 see the difference?

by dracule - 2006-06-01 12:21
» Cecil

"play the game, not the hardware" is a statement that goes against everything sony stands for... who said they would sell 5 million ps3's without games? ohh thats right sony.

and for the hdd, there would be non-sony drives, just have to pay sony licensing. just like all the "good" controllers.

ps3 and built in linux out of the box would be like getting that FreeLinux crap that comes with cheap computers. ps3 would have to find a partner like ubuntu.

What has microsoft stole from sony?? from what ive seen sony has copied MS. such as the release two consoles idea which sony Phill slagged off and has now decided to copy.

copying 3d graphics lmao this guys a dumbass, but thats not why im posting.

"all of the first year PS3 games will uses the motion sensitivity in some way or another"

OMG this is a negative, I'm getting a ps3, andi really would not like to play all my games looking like a 40 year old mom whose never played a game b4. And yes I have tried motion sensing before, its kinda gimiky.

by TheProfessor - 2006-06-01 14:24
» More corrections, sorry just trying to correct some misconceptions

“sony would loose alot of money if they allowed open hdd... keyboards and mice cost like $10 hdd cost $60-600 see the difference?”

It probably cost pennies to manufacture a mouse and keyboard in china, out of those 10 dollars, for *****s and giggles, let’s say the company is taking hmm 2 dollars. For a HD which is considerably more expensive to build. Let’s say the company takes 20 dollars. Now factor out the fact that more people will buy mice and keyboards than hard drives and you have yourself a good amount of profit on the mice and keyboard end.

“who said they would sell 5 million ps3's without games? ohh thats right sony.”

To explain the point that Playstation and Sony have great branding. Like most things Sony Execs say, this was taken out of context.

“Ps3 and built in linux out of the box would be like getting that FreeLinux crap that comes with cheap computers.”

All Linux distributions are free. Support and packaging (nice install CDs, manuals etc) are what companies charge you for. You can actually download most of them online. No need to partner up with anyone. The Kernel is the same for all of them.

“What has microsoft stole from sony??”

DVD format, Every feature of the XBOX and 360 Controllers are copied from DS2, Price point, target market, online connectivity was first introduced by the PS2, Movie playback, Hard drive (Sony had announce this before releasing), Backwards compatibility, and damn even the color. I could go on for days. But then again aren’t we glad companies copy what works, that way we all get great gaming experiences.

“copying 3d graphics lmao this guys a dumbass, but thats not why im posting.”

Well this was the PS1 biggest advantage over the Saturn. PS1 showed the world that 3D games are the wave of the future. Nintendo soon followed and made it even better by introducing the analog stick to consoles.

“yes I have tried motion sensing before, its kinda gimiky.”

Which ones? The sidewinder? The technology has come a long way, I played Warhawk. Also since all PS3s support tilting that means the libraries to properly use it will be in place and adopted. Before it was just a mapping of tilt with directional pad input this added delay and felt awkward.

Oh, they copy this. Oh, they copy that. Turns out that in the end, it's all Microsoft that does the copying, no one else.

» this guy is stupid

"Riiiiidge Raaaaacer!!! " That's the man XP

There a lie and suicide line in that interview. First, real time 3d graphics were first introduced properly by Starfox on SNES, not by Playstation. No doubt PS took the 3d games to the masses, but again they didn't create it. Even Sega Saturn was first in PS gen with 3d graphics, since they shipped with Virtua Fighter.

Really, this guys are stupid. You can't say you're first with 3d graphics and also say that, related to 360, that they were never first to market. Please, a little coherence.

And I think its suicide not to protect blue-ray discs just for its size. Five years ago, only five years, a 40gb HDD was good enough, right now you can get 500gb HDD for almost the same price, and again broadband speeds are growing by the minute. Besides blue-ray writers are being announced already due to ship next year, so not to protect the discs is incredibly short-sighted.

by mukus - 2006-06-01 22:38
» hdcp

By the way HDCP protection only works with HDMI, so the retard $500 pack can't display HDCP content since it'll have only component output, that's so stupid, how could they let HDMI out of any of the SKUs

by Jiminybillybob - 2006-06-02 01:32
» to 'the Professor'

Some things all games are bound to adopt eventually but its the original ideas that get copied.

Just because sony went 3d before nintendo doesn't meen that idea was stolen because they would have got there eventually if sony wasn't around.

Similarly if microsoft make a controller just because sony made a contoller before them doesnt meen it was stolen just because some buttons may be in similar places its just the industry standard.

The original ideas are things like gamerpoints, gamercards, motion controllers and I dont think sony would say that MS stole are colour thats just stupid.

by cooljay - 2006-06-02 07:48
» industry standards

industry standards are not copying. now taking something that was going to be released exclusivly for a console is. if all 3 used motion sensing it wouldnt be stealing but since nintendo said far in advanced that they would use motion sensing, than after sony lost the suit agaist immerson and gave warhawk 10 days to intiplement the design, i think we can safely assume sony is just taking wii's main feature to cover up their embarresment.

and doom(which was in 3d) released in 1993 was before the ps in 1994...

by dracule - 2006-06-02 12:04
» blu-ray

once broadband connections get more popular they will get screwed. i can get 6mbps for like 30 bucks a month and the university gives out 25mbps to its campus members for free. and i saw UofI in the US has made a 3-5Gbps broadband speed!

lets say a movie is 30 gb.

that is 30720mb, now divide by 6 you get 5120 seconds to download this movie. now divide by 60 and you will see it takes me 85 minutes, less than an hour and a half to download a full hd-movie. back in the days of dial up it took you like 6 days to download one movie, and they still put copy protection on.

by TheProfessor - 2006-06-03 18:45
» For those that keep saying, but that's "industry standard"

Well let me explain something. Things don’t become industry standard until someone implements them and others copy. It's not like every company gets together and says, hey let's use a controller with 4 shoulder buttons and make it standard.

I am not saying MS is bad for copying Sony. I commend them for it. Copying what works is what moves our industry forward. For example, I hated that the Xbox didnt have 4 shoulder buttons as it made playing winning eleven a horrid experience, thank god is in the 360. They have copied and then push their own ideas into the industry. It if wasn’t for them, online gaming would still be in the dark ages. You can also argue that if it wasn’t for Sony, 3D games might not have been adopted.

By the way, do you guys know Ideas cannot be patented? Only implementations can. Do you know why? Because we realize that ideas are what keeps us moving ahead as a civilization. Having proprietary ideas would ruin, or make our society stale. As a consequence we wouldn’t move forward. So quit whining and enjoy the fun of gaming. It’s about to get a whole lot better. My predictions is Video Games become the biggest entertainment medium of them all before the next next generation. Just imagine $20 games, free online gaming, and fun new ways to interact with your games (eye toy, Wii, motion sensing). Great times are coming.
