Immersion Unveils New Next-Gen Rumble Technology Without Sony |

Immersion has unveiled (to a limited number of people) its new next-generation force-feedback technology. This allows for a greater range and strength of the "rumbling" effects Immersion's technology is known for.After Immersion's case against Sony (which took place after Sony's exclusion of the Rumble feature from its PS3 controllers), it's no surprise that this technology was shown using a stock Xbox controller while playing a modified version of Star Wars: Jedi Knight II for the PC.
Aside from the more detailed and stronger rumbling effects in video games, this technology is supposed to be smaller, lighter and less power. During the said demonstration, the following array of force feedback effects were evident:
- A lightsaber effect that caused the entire controller to quiver subtly, then pulse realistically when the lightsaber was deactivated
- A heavy recoil effect when firing a rocket launcher, with the feedback trailing off as the rocket propelled into the distance
- Rapid-fire vibrations from a machine gun; each individual jolt seemed to be synced directly to the gun's firing rate
- A subtler "weapon switching" effect that gave you a hint about your next weapon; heavy guns produced a strong jolt, while small guns gave lighter one

Sony is the one who *****ed up. They should have settled like Ninty and microsoft did(well microsoft just bought some shares..lol)

Anyways it was also stupid of IMERSION to come back to Sony telling them here use our product we are ok with it! It is like eating something, then barfing it out and eating it up again!
Imersion should play their cards right if they want to live. Although I see many third developers using the technology, do you see many people buying the controllers! People will be wiped of their money form any console other than the Wii that they will not eb able to afford any other controllers!!!

*as proven by other suits, such as when MS and Sony were sued for not allowing mods, MS lost, Sony have been fighting back and forth for years (in Australia, the legality of moding a PS2 changes every six months and is currently legal, XBox is legally modable, and has been nearly since launch)

As for Sony, they are arrogant sobs who think they can tell Immersion what they can and can not do, screw them and MS was smart for freakin buying in to Immersion and making more money for themselves, this evil bs about MS is from idiots who have no idea about how the business world works.
Funny how most arguments about MS come from 15yr old virgins who think Sony doesn't partake in the bashing of MS and Nintendo in Japan in Japanese.

the whole lawsuit about the vibration technology was such a joke, they sued over the idea of using an asymmetrical weight rotating. i think there should be a limit to what you can patent, like 'i've had the best idea, 4 legs on a table... now anyone with a 4 legged table owes me'
i hate them to death.
without a proper endorsement from someone large like ms or nintendo (as i doubt sony will want to play ball) immersion will not go far.
i hate it when people get away with such stuff, immersion deserve to burn in hell.

PS3 Controller May Jolt Immersion
Force feedback company Immersion has updated Next-Gen.Biz on the status of its litigation with Sony, stating that if the PS3 controller doesn't use Immersion's patented rumble tech, revenues may be affected.
Immersion CEO Vic Viegas said, "If [Sony] eliminated all support for the current rumble technology, then presumably the third parties will not be selling vibration controllers, and IT WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON OUR REVENUE..."
Since the unveiling of the PS3 controller at E3 in May, many have assumed that force feedback is totally out of the question for Sony. However, Viegas indicated that there's still a chance that rumble could be worked into the final controller, if differences are resolved.
"It's not too clear what Sony's position will be on the rumble..." Viegas said. "Obviously, if Sony and Immersion resolve their differences, it would be best for the industry and for the gamers. They could help bring about this change quickly, and we could have this deployed very quick."
The use of force feedback in the PS3 controller is still strictly theoretical, and almost completely up to Sony.
Immersion hopes that first and third party controller manufacturers will adopt the technology, although it would TAKE JOINT COPORATION from console manufacturers, game developers and controller suppliers to implement it. Even if third parties had the ability to utilize force feedback in a PS3 controller, there would be no way to implement it from the software end without technical support from Sony.
In a statement regarding TouchSense, the company made sure to note a couple of times that the technology is compatible with motion and tilt-sensing controllers. Of course, Sony has said that it wouldn't use rumble technology in the PS3 controller, because it would interfere with the tilt sensors. However, it's painfully obvious that the choice to forego force feedback has to do with the litigation between Sony and Immersion, not technical difficulties.
"WE CONTINUE TO WANT TO TRY TO RESOLVE THIS, and we've had discussions with them in the past about how we could resolve this," Viegas said. "Up until now, those discussions haven't generated any progress, but we're still hopeful that we can bring this new technology into the market, and that we can resolve our differences with Sony."

So obviously, Immersion is going to lose a lot of revenue if it doesn't get a deal with Sony soon. It's not Sony that needs Immersion. It's Immersion that needs Sony. Sony not having rumber is not hurting Sony. Sony not having rumble IS HURTING Immersion though. That is why Immersion want so much to try to resolve it and have Sony license Immerion's prodcut. And Sony is going to bend immersion over and get a crazy out of it.
