Immersion survey results: you want your rumble!

The PS3 controllerHow sorely missed is vibration from the new PS3 controller? Rumble, after all, put the Shock in the first DualShock for the first PS. And no other console since that one (and the Rumble Pack add-on for the N64) came out without vibration - except for the PS3. But the results of a survey, commented on in ArsTechnica, suggests that vibration-less games will leave gamers wanting - wanting their DualShocks back, that is.

The survey's results report that 72% of respondents believe rumble/vibration enhances their game experience. Without rumble, they say, games like Madden just feel like... games. With rumble, however, the game experience gets kicked up a notch every time the player gets hit by 200-plus pounds of linebacker. In fact, motion-sensing placed a rather cold second to vibration, with half of the survey respondents prefering motion-sensing with rumble, and very, very few wanting motion-sensing alone.

There was one, er, quirk about the survey, though. The survey was commissioned by Immersion. You know, the company that sued Sony because its DualShock vibration feature violated copyright laws? Immersion won that lawsuit. Okay, fine, survey companies maintain that they are always neutral and take no sides in their surveys. Still, the ArsTechnica author wonders: is Immersion trying to deliver a message to Sony?

You know, at the end of the day, we're just glad that the games on the PS3 play well, given their TGS performance this year. Vibration/rumble can be debated to hell and back - some players want it, some players don't. We just want to play, vibration or not. The original PSOne controller didn't even have analog sticks, remember? Things can change.

» Who Cares?

Vibration is the stupidest thing ever... it offers no usefulness in any games. I'm sorry, but it's not realistic or anything; just overly annoying. My subwoofer provides better, more realistic vibration.

I say "so long Immersion".

» motion-sensing placed a rather cold second to vibration

These are results of a survey filled out by people who have not played on the yet-to-be-released PS3 with motion sensing controller........ Well how scientific!!

I didn't realize that Sony had taken the rumble feature out of the controller. Ah man, now I have to cancel my preorder. (sarcasm)

» Do you prefer A Steak with fries or without fries.

What kind of bs survey is this? Of course people are going to prefer Motion sensing and rumble.

Why not post if people prefer motion sensing over rumble. I sure do. 73% is actually a pretty good percentage of people. I am surprise by that. For something you hardly feel after a while it seems highly overrated.

Also this survey was taken over the internet and puts it's authenticity to the ground. Even further MS fans would probably vote just out of spite to make rumble seem more important. How about surveying only people who want a PS3

by UnrealPunisher - 2006-09-26 01:47
» well maybe ?

it makes no sense. Why sue a company (sony) and accuse them of steal your patents . When you rely on its propduct (playstation controller) to make money. Immersion could haved cutted a deal with SONY and drop the lawsuit but no they kept going. So now that Playstation 3 will come out with out rumble they want Sony to rethink this and add rumble features. I'm sorry but business aside this is also a personal issue with SONY and I don't blame them for droping the rumble feature at all. I could careless for immersion, rumble does nothing really to make the game more fun. If you enjoy the game then sometimes you don't even notice that the controller was shaking. I rather have the six axis. Immersion could cry all they want but SONY won't be putting in your pockets now especially when Microsoft who also got sue now owns 23% of the company. One thing I don't understand is that how did microst won the case against immersion and SONY lost when they are clearly the same thing and using it the same way ?

» Sony Fan Boy!

The last paragraph is a sony fan boy. With out rumble the game loses fell. I think sony went stale here and there is no getting around it.

» the survey was skewed

I mean,

you want to play with rumble?

or without the power of rumble that immerse you in a game?

THIS IS NOT A SURVEY, it's like asking if you want a car or a car and an mp3 player, this is stupid, they HAD to ask something like: you'd play with rumble? or with motion sensing? NOW this could be interresting, I don't care if immersion is GAY and post unreliable survey stats. I mean, 1st they had to MAKE a survey!

ps: anyway I prefer motion sensing A LOT!! over rumble, even if the two in the same controller would have been better , dah, lol. But motion sensing is SO superior!!! ( flight control, cars control, even "saking off" ennemies in RFOM, and I'm sure we'll see things like super monkey ball with motion sensing and loco roco ps3 with motion sensing and katamari motion sensing also, and I suppose a LOT more! compared to rumble... rumble can rumble yeah, but nothing else, I mean, in any game it's just to add some feedback OR in few games, to add some new elements ( I've been shot from this place ) ) so sony=eros and immersion=tanathos!

» Sense This

What true gamer would rather steer a "car" in real space, but not feel the engine turn or collisions? What gamer would rather point there guns in real space, but not feel them pop. And if you say "rumble" doen nothing to add to the immersion of the world your in, go back an play games like Splinter Cell, Grand Theft, Prince of Persia, Halo, Tony Hawk, Rid*****... thats off the top of the head. I truly believe that Sony knows it made a mistake, They revolutionized gaming more than once, but now i feel there making a last minute gamble on a copy-cat technology. (Wii) Weve all played a match with our little brother or younger cousin, and "motion sensing" technology reminds me of them trying to turn there car or their character with the controller in real space! Bottom line is, i would rather a platform that I can "sense".. (Visually, Audibly and physically..) rather than one that can "sense" me.

Ultimatley though.. i feel we all want choice in a platform, and the games with the power to allow us to do so. of the two "next gen" platforms, the "winner" will be the one that understands we all have our own identity, and as such we all have our own tastes. Let us have the freedom to make Our gaming experience what we want it to be.

» I Remember Doing This Survey.

I really stated the importance of the rumble feature. Hopefully Sony will give in and make a controller with it.

Yeah kinda would suck to play the PS1 Metal Gear Solid on the PS3, (and wait, also on the PSP too) where the scene that Psycho Mantis says "Put your controller on the floor" and the controller would shake to show the power that he had. I thought that was really funny. Now it's even more stupid.

To be honest I would rather have the rumble feature then this tilt control bull****. Why do you need it if you already have the analog sticks. I mean really if you do use a tilt feature for a controller, make the controller different in shape and use. Nintendo did have the right idea on a motion controller in the way that they used it, or at least close to the right idea. I think the best motion sensing controller would be a type that has two pieces, one for the right hand and one for the left hand that are both similar and all fingers would rest on pressure sensitive buttons while the thumbs are on a type of analog stick or nub of sorts. To me that would be pretty cool.

» immerson jsut trying to convince ppls

since they got screwed and are trying everything to win back sony and to try to make ppls demand rumble but it wont happen, immerson can burn in hell.i bet this survey was biased and they changed the votes just to make ppls think that rumble is needed to make ppls buy ps3s.

» hmm

after having played Warhawk at E3 this year, i can say that motion sensing is much more interesting and relevent to gaming.

what is the main thing gamers complain about a game? the controls. motion sensing is indeed the next evolution in game controlling (though i don't think a wand is the best way to go about it with particular game genres, or overly complex games).

think of a boxing game, where you could jerk the DS3 controller to the left or right to dodge and push your opponent back when you lock up.

or using the controller's motion sensing to steer Old Snake into a group of bad guys when he's inside of the barrel. i play F.E.A.R on my PC with my headphones on and the sound of a shotgun going off, or an explosion rocks my senses just as effectively has a rumble (but minus the annoying vibration in my hands). i used to play with the rumble on, but for the past year or so, i've been turning it off as it's becoming intrusive (me and my fiance turned off the rumble while playing Lego Star Wars 2 as it was just really, really annoying).

Rumble: Unnecessary for the gaming experience as a nice subwoofer mimics the "immersive" effect.

Motion Sensing: Allows for the creation of gaming experiences we've never had before.

Motion Sensing wins.

Immersion made a mistake. and they're paying for it. i love irony.

The fact that Immersion keeps commissioning these surveys tells me that they need Sony more than Sony needs them.

How many PS3 games are really gonna us it?

Beside WarHawk....

» @ 18

Uhh, How about all of them! I can't think of a game that is NOT using the motion tilt function. "Lair", in fact, will use it so extensively that it doesn't allow the use of the d-pad at all. Do some research.

by common sense - 2006-09-26 12:58
» Both features are needed

MGS4 uses motion sensing to move snake in new ways, such as crawling by being able to move snake's arms independently.

However, Kojima said rumble feature was really useful for games.

I think FPS are way better with rumble, for consoles obviously, cuz for pc is just a stupid rumble.

I'll miss rumble, no it wasn't very important, but i think it should have been standard and improved upon, not discarded.

I hope the titl isn't as lame as i think it might be... LESS THAN 2 MONTHS and I'll find out

Vibration is only for girls HAHAHAHA!!! ***** vibration. its for *****s. U guys are gay for wanting vibration while playing madden, WHAT A FA GGOT!!!!!!!!!!! !!! HAHAHAHA!!!!

by Annony - 2006-09-26 17:22
» 72-percent WANT it??

I think those numbers have been... 'inflated'. Immersion is trying to play a stare-down game with Sony: first company to blink loses. And right now, Immersion is losing... badly.

by lansingone - 2006-09-26 18:34
» im one to know

i was one of the few that had thare ps7 fuse blow (the one that controls rumble in the ps2), from playing a bad copy of GTA vice city (yes it's possible) and i can say at first i was like ***** my rumble is broken but then after 2 weeks i didin't even notice. so how good is somthing that you don't even notice it's gone after 2 weeks? also i found it does not make it harder to play games, i play socom and MGS online all the time and it does not make me play bad. so take it from me, loss of rumble is not as bad as you think, plus gaining tilt makes the loss that much less

by Jon - 2006-09-26 18:57
» hrm..

to 25, i dont think immersion is loosing. after all ps3 has no rumble, and immerision now has lots of money, how is that loosing?

personaly, im a fan of the rumble. i voted in the survey. i think sony made a big mistake trying to stand up to immersion, they should of just taken it in the ass like m$ did.

i also own a 360. undecided on ps3 yet, i probally wont get one until the price drops say 25%? :)

the rumble is no big deal ive been playin pc games forever and i never even notived theres no rumble in my mouse or in my keyboard... and for all those idiots saying sony is a copy cat... what has m$ done thats original... oh i kno they put two extra shoulder buttons on their controllers... no wait... sony's been doin that for 10 yrs now hmmm... maybe its the exploding power bricks... yeah thats it... no one else has those... ive always wanted a console that could burn my house down

by cipherblaze - 2006-09-28 03:26
» Original?

MS ran in high definition with its first offering.

360 is standard High Definition.

Seamlessly Integrated Live Multiplayer Tested and true with its first Child... Flawless execution in its second.

Ergenomic Controllers (Some people still play with their first Generation) I perfer Controller S

Internal (not to mention swappable) Hard drive

the list goes on.... ect.

As far as burning your house down..

PS1 had a few recalls due to faulty external wiring that caused fires. PS2 had recalls due to defects in their laser diodes, overheating and faulty wiring.

This is the nature of electronics and faulty wiring.

These people are not building a chair and when done can just sit on it and say... ok its done. Its a computer.
