Immersion Comments on Rumble Removal

Could it be mere coincidence that the once-standard rumble feature is being removed from Sony's newest controller? During the time that Sony made the decision to exclude the rumble feature, they were also being sued by Immersion for a breach of Intellectual Property regarding that same rumble technology. Sony claimed at E3 that the rumble feature was removed due to interference with the motion and tilt sensing technology.

However, Immersion has spoken out about what they believe to be the true reason behind Sony's decision to remove the rumble;

“If what they’re saying is in fact the reason why [the controller will not have vibration], I’ve offered them numerous solutions to the problem”. Victor Viegas of Immersion Corporation said in an interview. “I don’t believe it’s a very difficult problem to solve, and Immersion has experts that would be happy to solve that problem for them”. Viegas says that Immersion “would have no qualms helping Sony with their problem, if indeed it is a problem”.

The suggestiveness of Immersion's standpoint could be somewhat accusatory, but do you think Sony's explanation for the exclusion of vibration could be valid?  The solutions that Immersion offered contain implications that Sony would have to accept to the conditions of their current litigation, and cease their appeal against the current injunction.

At one point Sony was their biggest customer. When the Immersion vs. Sony stuff ended, Imersion's share value dropped by about 5 dollars.

They openly site the PSX, PS2, and Gamecube as the main applications of thier TouchSense Technology in the console division.

Nintendo Gamecube as the main applications of their touchSense Technology? This is bull crap. Nintendo patent rumble feature on N64 before Immersion, Sony copied N64 with Dual Shock (not stealing TouchSense). It just happened that Immersion patented TouchSense before Sony release Dual Shock, that's why Sony got sued and have to drop the "shock" on PS3 controller.

I really hope we can buy a adapter to the ps2 controllers. I'm used to rumble. Maby not realistic but still added some feeling.

I always complaning on my dad that he use the control as a steeringweel when driving. Now i have to do the same thing as he. (humiliating)

Read between the lines. Immersion is doing this to expose sony for their lies about the dual shock. Immersion knows that if sony uses the dual shock, they'll have more to go on in court and thus Immersion will have a better chance of winning. This is Immersions way of making sony look very bad (seeing as how sony said the dual shock and sensors would have problems if they were both implemented on the controller). Immersion is basicly saying, 'we can fix your problem, but you have to settle and admit you have no idea what you doing'. Sony has been getting horrible PR lately.

Immersion are obviously stating here that they would help Sony, but obviously CHARGE THEM. Not only would Sony have to pay them a fee for every controller sold with rumble, but an additional fee for immersions 'help' with the rumble not interfering with the motion sensing.
