According to IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon, Sony must produce more first-part software for the PS3 or risk seeing more and more units left on shop shelves. His comments follow the release of the NPD video game sales data for 2006, which, according to Sony's Jack Tretton, prove the power of the PlayStation brand.
The IDC analyst said that while he agrees with Tretton's assessment of the PS2's power in the market and the boost that it has given to most third-party publishers' bottom lines, the PlayStation brand doesn't appear to be helping the PS3. Here are his words:
The PlayStation brand doesn't appear to be helping the PS3. If NPD's numbers are correct, there are over 300K PS3s on retail shelves. That is not good for a console launch of only a million and it's not good for publishers with PS3 software.
Pidgeon warns that Sony must focus on the games that are available for the PS3. He says:
Software libraries are the key driver of console sales, and no console is going to sell on the promises - they've got to deliver. Sony needs more must-have first party titles to sell consoles. Gamers know Halo 3 is coming on the Xbox 360, and they can expect Mario on the Wii, but there are no established first party franchises coming to the PS3 except Gran Turismo - and that is delayed.

Lets face it, the 360 is going to outsell the PS3 for another year until GT5 hits stores. MS is going to have a 25 million plus market share. Sony's first party developers have a lot of work to do this year to help sony dig it's way out of this hole they have created. 2008 needs to be sony's comeback year.

By the time GT5 is out there are going to be at least two very big 360 60 fps driving games out (and they have the advantage of rumble).

As for Sony first party exclusives, yes you're right in saying they need more releases however many and i say many, 3rd party titles are as powerful as some of the Sony published titles.
And just for sh.it.s and giggles, how many Microsoft exclusives are there...without guns? HMMMMMM?? Like what? 1! and even then it sold ~okay~. HA! Talk about awesome. I can't wait for Saints Row 2 on the 360, because it's soooo cool. Or maybe generic shooter 5 coming out in Q4! Seriously douchelydoucheb ags, it's pretty sad when you're only system is doing good when it happens to steal another console's title.
remember: It's all about the games ^^!
