IBM Talks Backwards Compatibility, Processor for PS3

PS3Backward compatibility has been a major catchphrase of the next-gen consoles. Now, PlayStation 3 has its say on the issue.

Reed's Electronic News talked with Tom Reeves, VP of semiconductor and technology services at IBM,  about backwards compatibility testing on the PS3 and about IBM's co-designed Cell processor, used in the PS3.

When asked about how the Cell will affect backwards compatibility, Reeves said: “Sony is very concerned about quality and backward compatibility. They want to get this right. They tested game after game after game. When there were about 40 PlayStation 1 games that didn’t work properly, that didn’t pass their criteria for quality.”

The Cell will feature eight cores, seven of which will be used by the PS3. Reeves said that if one of these cores fail: “It’s just like a reliability failure on your TV or DVD recorder. If it’s within warranty, you send it back. If it’s not, your game doesn’t work anymore.”

So, maybe the PS3 will excel at backwards compatibility, where other next-gen consoles have lacked a bit. As for the cores...we'll have to wait and see.

Double Post

Why in the world would you repost something and change a few words? He probably just wanted to get paid or something.

lol qj is funny, and by funny I mean retarted... @1, the wii has partial backwards compatibility, since you have to REBUY pre GC games and download them. PS/PS2 discs will work already. Another + the PS3 has over the Wii, (like there wasn't enough already), and as for the 360, if you have a game that doesn't start with "HALO" you're out of luck in that area.

Backwards Compatability

Having the ability to play old games on new consoles is more important then people think. How many of the PS1 games do people still own and sometimes play? I know I still have and play all the Final Fantasy games because they were good and still have replay value even in the generation of the ps2. Also just like the Xbox360, games will be upscaled to HD resolutions which will make the games look sharper. If backwards compatability was not that important in a next gen console then why are the xbox360 forums flooded with request to get games working. While the Xbox360 has to use the majority of its power to emulate the xbox the PS3 will have a major component in the PS2 so that it can run PS2 games with hardware unlike the XBox360 that relies on the software to emulate the hardware. So is it important? Yes, will people be more interested in buying it if it can play PS2 games? Yes. For those that dont have a PS2 and buy a PS3, they have the option of buying any PS2 game and be able to play it without much worrying. For those that buy a XBox360, they are limited to the XBox360 games and the ones on the compatability list and even then, the games on the list arent fully compatable as the forums are also flooded with people complaining that games are freezing.

yep

As #9 says, if sony gets this right, it will only be 1 step closer to asuring a brighter future for the PS3, i to own a couple of games on the ps1, and a few games i love on the ps2, that i wanna be able to play with out problems, unlike how microsoft did, software wise, this is a better solution. We shall see in the coming months how things unfold...

I agree

Backward Compatability is good when you own something and can be used on other systems, like cd's on dvd's and stuff. Is not like: "I will sell you again if you want....". You cannot stick on the New Nintendo (I hate the new name...) Nes, SNES and N64 Cardtridges + aditional to that, it's only 512MB of internal memory and you will have to (if want more) to buy SD cards for that purpose, that of course translate in more money. In reality, Sony always makes you do only ONE purchase, where usually you have all basic stuff by default, not like: "You need an adapter/kit to do it like you want to....". I really agree with the past comments and also think the price tag of the PS3 is the value of what you are really getting (not saying is cheap, but is OK for me....).

Wii

All the old gameing systems that the wii is going to emulate are going to probally be found on the ps3 within the first year. Just look @ the psp and see how many of those systems u can play right now on a portable device.

Back Catalog

The backwards compatability thing has me wondering: If people still want some old PS1 and PS2 games, will they re-release some of the more popular ones for people who haven't bought them yet? I'm talking about the case, instructions, disk and all, not just the downloaded game. It's just my preference, like buying CDs. If I spend $20, I'd rather get the entire CD than just the mp3s.

"For those that buy a XBox360, they are limited to the XBox360 games and the ones on the compatability list and even then, the games on the list arent fully compatable as the forums are also flooded with people complaining that games are freezing" Vietone, there are always issues with software emulation, whether it's BC on the 360 or an emulator running on the PC. You don't need to exaggerate to make the point. :| The amount of power needed for emulation is irrelevent. No-one cares whether a machine is using all of it's power or a fraction of it's power to run an old game via emulation. What is important is how well the game runs, i.e. the quality of the emulation. If it's great, gamers will just enjoy the game, if not, they'll discuss the problems. Which leads on to the final point where you say "If backwards compatability was not that important in a next gen console then why are the xbox360 forums flooded with request to get games working". Firstly, 360 forums are not FLOODED with such requests (again, stop exaggerating). However, for gamers who want to run Xbox games on their 360, where else would you expect them to discuss issues with emulation if not on a 360 forum?
