IBM seeks to tap CELL's potential |
Ó
Last month, IBM selected University of Illinois Computer Science Professor Laxmikant "Sankay" Kale, the head of the department's Parallel Programming Laboratory and Marc Snir, head of the UI Computer Science Department for a Shared University Research program involving nine universities worldwide to work on expanding the uses for the Cell processor.Kale's lab is most famous for creating Charm++, a programming system that manages the computing work in parallel processing environments. Charm++ allows researchers using supercomputers to concentrate on their research questions instead of getting their computer to work properly.
Proponents of Cell technology cite that it offers an advantage in faster and more direct control over the movement of data to keep processors constantly busy. In theory, a bunch of Cell processors clustered together could yield 50 times the peak performance of the same-sized regular PC cluster.
The News-Gazette reports that research does have its limits though. Kale and co. may have access to the Cell technology and the special tools working with it. Thing is, they haven't received a PS3 ...yet.

I knew the Cell would be good for something, unfortunately it doesn't excel at gaming like sony lead us to beleive it would. Everyone though the PS3 was going to blow the 360 out of the water. We all know how that turned out.
As far as gaming goes it seems to be The cell from Hell,it will proberly end up being some sort of Fractical landscape creator.
you idiot there using it because they acualy know how to use it so they will be the ones to actually get the real graphic power out of the system and what do you mean get the ***** out ya mouth the system ps3 is only been out for less than 3 months you cant ever tap a gaming super computer in that short time frame idiot
" you cant ever tap a gaming super computer in that short time frame idiot" It's a console, not a 'gaming super computer', so you're the last person who should be calling others an idiot. Cell is good for floating-point, but it's not that good as a general purpose processor. That's why after being with IBM since the beginining with the PowerPC, Apple rejected Cell in favour of Intel processors for the Mac range. And yes, you can't tap much into a console's power at the beginning, but that applies to ALL, including the 360. The PS3 is not as powerful as claimed at E3 2005, so there's not much more to tap compared to the 360. It's only slighly more powerful than the 360 (and devs agree), which is not enough to make any real noticeable difference to games.
first time here and it seems everyone is a f@cking know it all! IBM is still working on untapping the power of the CELL and yet every loser on the web thinks it's just good for one thing. Bunch of d!ckwads!!!
