Hori's HDD - Image 1Talk about huge. Thanks to a news item on Kotaku, we got word that game peripheral manufacturer Hori is planning to release a 160 GB HDD PS3 hard drive this August. According to the specs they've put up over at ITmedia, the hard drive connects to the PlayStation 3 using USB and runs at a fast 5400 rpm.

That's definitely a lot of added power for the game machine, but how much will it cost? If you have a pretty hefty wallet and feel like emptying the contents of the thing, get ready to shell out 29,140 yen (US$ 240) for the addon.

There's certainly a lot of uses we can see for this thing, especially if you're planning to use your PS3 as a secondary Linux supercomputer of some sort. In any case, expect it to come out on August 2.

not impressed.

I hate party scam pricing. The are probably using the biggest P.O.S. 5400rpm laptop drive in their product yet they want to charge HOW MUCH!?! I hope everyone just goes on eBay and buys a 7200rpm HD for less than 200... 3Rd party sellers need to get their heads straight on pricing.

by - 2007-07-19 06:14:09
yea

Agreed. Plus, what the hell do you need all that space for anyway? It's a god damn game console not a PC. Clam down people.

by - 2007-07-19 06:23:11
what the heck?

Why the **** would I pay 240 for this? I live in an expensive country and I can just buy a 160 gig drive for a $130 and stick it inside my ps3! Or, maybe I'll just keep using my 250gig 3,5 drive I have connected to my ps3 in the USB drive that cost me $130

by - 2007-07-19 06:39:11
I feel like I'm getting punk'd

Victor B. Do you actually realize that you can plug any USB drive into the PS3. I bought 500GB for just over $100 about six months ago, and that was at retail prices. Why the hell is this even being reported as news?

by Jx1 - 2007-07-19 06:56:32
because they are?

Do you care how many people are dying all the time? do you care if someone robs someone? does it change your life?? no. but end fact, they are news.. Easy to comprehend

by - 2007-07-19 07:09:41
Second that..

You can get a 160GB that simply replaces the internal one for around $150. Also 5400RPM is the low end, not the high end for speed. Maybe Hori should find suppliers that don't charge them retail, becuase you'd have to be ignorant or insane to bother with this. Hell if you are going to go the USB route you can get a 300GB+ drive and mount it in a USB enclosure for less than that.

by - 2007-07-19 07:40:47
No it isn't.

This is a Playstation 3 blog. Are they going to start reporting every new USB hard driving coming to market, just because it happens to be supported by the PS3?

by - 2007-07-19 07:56:07
Uh, No.

"a fast 5400 rpm" I think the word your grasping for is 'slow'. Thats a slow, crappy USB drive.

by - 2007-07-19 07:56:56
why usb

doesn't ps3 support SATA? why doesn't someone release an HDD for that? If not at least an IDE one like the stock drive.

by - 2007-07-19 08:07:03
mmm..

The PS3 stock drive is SATA, and plenty of manufacturers make drives that can be dropped into the PS3 without issue. That is why this isn't news. It's not even close to news, and doesn't resemble news in any way.

5400 vs. 7200

IGN or was it CNET did test on the 5400 vs 7200 and the conclusion was that you got no added speed boast from the 7200 drive... just more heat... i think that 5400 is plenty fast for a console... it isn't like i have linux installed or anything.

by - 2007-07-19 08:23:32
what?

Are you kidding me? Then why would there be an added performance benifit from the WD Raptor HDD's which spin at 10 000 RPM? There wouldnt. But guess what! THERE IS! amazing isnt it? http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage.html?modelx+33+model1+678+model2+676+chart+32 Look through the different comparisons. The Raptor is the winner overall and only loses in some because of A) Uses Sata, not Sata 2. B)Doesnt have the new reading technique of the WD7500AAKS. The Samsung Spinpoint T166 also wins in a few catagories but still does not have the overal performance advantage of the Raptor. It may be more expensive but its better! there is no way 5400 and 7200 display the same ammount of performance. It may be that there is a unnoticable difference to some but that doesnt mean there isnt a difference.

This is a worthy post?

I would think that the developers of CoD4 announcing that the PS3 version of CoD4 would look just as good as the 360 version AND run at 60 FPS would be considered news. I sent the tip guys! Wheres the post? I guess you dont care about the games and only advertising products for other small companies. Thanks but no thanks!

what a piece of crap

for that much money, you can get a larger, internal drive for your console. Theres no reason not to. its a standard laptop sized sata hdd and its even in the instruction manual on how to do it!

by CrashCore - 2007-07-19 10:27:11
erm... 7200RPM?

The HDD will only run at 5400RPMs if it's in the PS3 anyways, so there's no use in buying a 7200RPM. However, this is still a ripoff; agreed.

by CrashCore - 2007-07-19 10:30:03
corrected...

Sorry, I stand corrected. I didn't see the whole thing about it being a USB drive. That's even worse... I can feel noobs' wallet's crying right now.

by - 2007-07-19 12:05:24
wowww.

5400rpm 160gb external drive selling for 240? its not 2003 or 2004 anymore. its 07. you can get a 7200rpm sata drive internal for less than that. and if its external you want, put out an extra 20 bux for an external casing.

by - 2007-07-19 12:11:53
go on to ebay!!

you can get a cheap hhd for it there!!! i bought an 80 gig drive for my laptop for £60 including external case!! just format it as fat32 and it ll work!! no bother!!!

by - 2007-07-19 12:18:43
wiifanboy

Man this is why the ps3 is sorry.fanboys just buy a nintendo wii(highest selling console on market)and it's fun with games.

by - 2007-07-19 13:18:59
or...

we could play some real games, not just compilations of minigames controlled by a phallus.

by - 2007-07-19 13:25:39
Oi...

Matt, he was referring to the performance _inside the PS3_. There is no difference _inside the PS3_, and it doesn't matter because it's a console, it's designed to perform exactly up to the point it needs to and not any bit more.

by damonous - 2007-07-19 15:06:50
Already running 160gb SATA

I've been running a WD 160gb SATA inside my PS3 (replaced the internal 60gb) for almost 2 months now. Cost me $120 from MicroCenter (and that was probably higher than an online price). Took me 30mins or less to swap it out physically (about 3hrs to backup/restore files). The PS3's restore operation went perfectly --I didn't have to re-download a single game or demo. Now I have plenty of room that I'm filling up with ripping my CDs to use it as a Media Server.

High RPMS

Are really only good for transfering/loading big files....where the drive actually gets a chance to spin that fast and maintain it for awhile.... If you are just loading pictures, watching movies ETC you will not notice the difference....but if you were to transfer a 1gig file from your 7200RPM internal HDD to say a 7200+ RPM USB drive, then you would notice it go faster then the 5400RPM....but I don't think that situation crops up much on the PS3....

by - 2007-07-19 17:07:54
lolz

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item+N82E16822136123 NewEgg: 1, Hori: 0. And you can probably that drive even cheaper

by - 2007-07-19 19:27:57
*QUESTION*

if you use an HDD like this will it combine the to the internal 60 gb hdd that comes with the ps3

by - 2007-07-19 21:21:08
kind of

it would just show up as another drive like if u plugged in a thumb drive

by - 2007-07-20 02:20:45
Wow

So this is an external, 5400RPM, 160GB drive for two hundred and forty f*cking dollars? Hori must be joking. This is even worse than $100 for a 20GB 360 drive. FFS you can find an internal SATA, 7200RPM (not that it matters in the PS3, but whatever), 250GB drive for a little more than half that price. Hori: try again.

by - 2007-07-20 02:24:38
And on top of that

It's made by f*cking Hori! Who buys Hori hard drives? You can get that internal SATA 7200RPM 250GB drive made by a trusted hard drive company like Seagate or Maxtor for around $150

by - 2007-07-20 05:42:51
i live here in japan

and this product is those millions of japanese that dont know what a PC is. i myself have portable 7200rpm HDD with a USB enclose, bought em separate for a very cheap price. but still the USB transfer on PS3 is so slow it is better to buy the 160gb HDD 5400rpm and put it inside the PS3.

by - 2007-07-20 05:47:33
well

what the hell are you guys complaining about, its not like there forcing you to buy this addon stupid. Im not getting this right away maybe later cause this is really interesting, however my friend is already close to 60GB on his thing, so i can see where this benefits some people.

by - 2007-07-20 06:03:24
let me point out..

That you don't have to buy this if you so choose not to. And by the many complaining posts on this topic all your doing is saying its too much and and its stupid, well guess what don't buy it. I don't see how you making these posts is helping the cause or better yet having any real purpose.

by - 2007-07-20 09:18:37
i have a external hdd

can i put it on the ps3 via usb

by - 2007-07-20 13:12:24
