Sony PS3 - Image 1If you're one of many who have been confused about the processor size of Sony's 40GB version of its PlayStation 3 game console, Sony Computer Entertainment head honcho Kazuo Hirai has some clarifications. Hirai confirmed that the new 40GB Sony PS3 uses a 65nm Cell Processor instead of the old 90nm versions.

Hirai also noted that while the Cell has been made smaller, the RSX graphics engine that powers the Sony PlayStation 3 remains at the 90nm measure. No performance differences are expected, except for power efficiency benefits for the 40GB version.

The SCE boss also addressed questions on the future of the 60GB and 20GB Sony PlayStation 3 models. He says that while both SKUs remain in stock, production has been halted for both.

Both the 20GB and the 60GB Sony PS3 are backwards compatible, meaning that they can run Sony PSX and PlayStation 2 titles. Hirai says that these two may be produced again in the future, but it depends on how the market reacts to the absence of backwards compatibility features.

» Price Drop

I'm all for the 20 & 60GB and it being backwards compatible. Though this is unless these models plan on another drop in the next year. And just in time for The Last Remnant to release to the states.

Until that happens. I'll stick with the Wii, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and it's many other exciting games.

This' not to say that the PS3 is bad or anything. It's just that these prices are still too high.

» Hey PS3 fans

Remember when you were all about the PS3 and its extra large Hard Drive compared to the other consoles? Remember when the PS3 was the king of backwards compatibility? What ever happened to all that?

Seems to me Sony is cutting corners to sell these things, and if they were actually doing well, they wouldn't be *****ing with the systems like this.

Fortunately for the early buyers, you still get your better system. And I am not talking about the chip sizes.

» flipping fools

hey skidz, you're a flipping idiot. people are such idiots talking about sony is going back on their word and screwing over customers by selling a cheaper system months later and that they took out backwards compatibility for ps2 games. there is a 80 gb ps3 thats backwards compatible, there are 60gbs and a few 20gbs available. there are options for people to buy, if you want something in life you pay for it. a 40gb is there for people who wants to play ps3 games and not ps2 games, anyone who has collection of ps2 games, own a ps2. if a person wants to play ps2 games, they can buy a 20 gb, 60 gb or 80gb,. there are options for people to buy like when people are shopping for a car or food or whatever.

» Sony HAVE gone back on their word...

It's ok saying you still have the 80GB Version, but that's only in the US! Europe doesn't have that, only the 60GB which is running low and being phased out and the new 40GB version with no BC. Sony *****ing suck for that, I'm holding off buying a PS3 til next year so I can get a better deal and better games, but it means I've lost BC because Sony want to cut cornors to catch up to the 360 and Wii.

» I am glad I have my 60 gig.

I don't want half-assed backwards compatibility or none at all. I just hope my system doesn't die anytime soon. Or that it dies under warranty and Sony tries to give me something other than a 60 gig to replace it.

» warning danger! Will Robinson danger!

I just wanted to say that anyways yeah I just got a 60 gb I'm loving it i personally think sony pretty much changed the rules and not their word if you look the new systems are 20 and 60 gb if you go by the software bc. Besides its like the psp slim they made the battery smaller but because they optimised the system you never notice a difference in the battery life. I think sony felt they needed to get a gain in the market and seeing that some people didn't care to have bc and others did then why not go cheaper and make it software

» TBH

I personally think this is crazy. Theres a million games out there that ppl still have who may want an all in 1 console(for tidyness sakes)

Not including mem card slots make the Wii slightly better at connectivity hence SDslot. The card slot has definetly made thing easier for ME!(file transfer from PC) All except 1 ps2 game works for me an im happy with 60 gig.

Shame all those i know expectin 2 get a ps3 a gna miss out.

» Shut up seriously

I could care less what type of fanboy you are they are all the same. The reason why they stopped the BC is cause people just got the damn system for PS2 and PS1 games and not next gen games. The main reason why there game sales were abysmal.

They actually care about this gen. I can't see how anyone would upgrade to a next gen system just to play old gen games. If you want that go keep your PS2 and such. Its a shame that people buy stuff without reason's.
