Hints of new PSP and PS3 features for Leipzig Games Convention

The Leipzig Games Convention (GC) scheduled for August 23 to 26, 2007, will be the venue for big announcements from Sony regarding its PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.

Well, you already knew that there would be some big announcements - after all, that's what David Reeves said (David Reeves is the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, SCEE). If you recall, Reeves said that SCEE will be revealing three new features and services for the PlayStation Portable that are exclusive to Europe - as well as some good news about the PS3.

MCVUK believes that that a PS3 price cut is very much possible. We agree. Yes, it was established at E3 that there would be no price cut now for the PS3 in Europe, but that doesn't mean that there won't be a price cut months from now.

After all, with 60GB PS3 units selling at US$ 499 in North America with the successful introduction of the 80GB PS3, it only makes sense that a similar marketing move will be implemented in Europe soon after the Leipzig Games Convention and GC Developers Conference (GCDC) - meaning that buyers can enjoy a PS3 price cut come late August or early September.

MCVUK also expects SCEE to reveal video-on-demand and Freeview TV services. We can't find any solid evidence to support such claims, but MCV has a point: if Reeves said that Sony would release some "fireworks" at Leipzig, then video-on-demand and Freeview TV both fit that promise.

Correct us if we're wrong, but Freeview is a UK service. Is it available elsewhere in Europe? While a price cut is easy to implement everywhere in Europe, we're not so sure that Freeview has Continental counterparts willing to extend a similar service to those on the mainland.

» where would the aerial plug in

If the PS3 was to get Freeview, where would you plug the aerial into?

Just a thought?

Yeah, I don't see how the PS3 could work as a Freeview device. It has no input does it?

» Excellent question!

The PS3 has Ethernet, USB 2.0 ports, Bluetooth 2.0, and built-in Wi-Fi on the 60 GB and 80 GB versions.

» If you'll forgive the fanboyism...

Just wanted to clarify my comment above - basically I'm trying to say that Sony knew what it was doing with the PS3. It's a system that can handle new technology for the next few years. Freeview input devices and aerials should integrate very easily with the PS3. [Yeah, I'm a Wii-360 fanboy, but I do admire the sheer technological strength of the PS3.]

i wonder how much more technology sony can integrate with the PS3 since they want it to be the centre of entertainment at home

by crait - 2007-07-20 11:05
» yeah

they can integrate as much stuff as the want

usb is like a door to anywhere you want to go

(like the waredrobe in narnia)

they can make adapters for any new technology that comes out

and have games that can use those adapters

(sry aboot spellin')

» maybe..

The freeview is for the psp like they do the tv tuner for the new slim japanese psp... who knows... I home the tv tuner comes to US in some way....

» Freeview

Freeview is indeed a UK only service, however, it's really just DVB-T (digital TV broadcast via regular TV transmitters), and that is available in other parts of Europe. Also there is DVB-S (digital TV broadcast by satellite) which is available basically everywhere, and DVB-C (digital TV broadcast by cable).

There are currently very cheap receivers for (at least) DVB-T from people like Hauppauge which connect to USB, so it's entirely possible that Sony could produce official USB TV receivers and offer DVR type functionality.

It would be quite a hefty product though - such systems are not cheap!

Then again it would be another great selling point for the PS3 as a media hub.

» cool

if it comes true.

There must be simular services available elsewhere.

» Freeview?

Isn't freeview just DVB-T? If so I guess nearly all contries in EU, will be able to use that service. But I don't hope that service will be UK-only.

Regarding the video-on-demand feature I read months ago, that it will only be in major PAL-contries. I know Denmark isn't one of that, but what about the whole Scandinavian? Then we are about 20 mio, and it's the same company who is "selling" the PS3; Nordisk Film (Nordic Film/Movie)
