Heavenly Sword pics and some gratuitous rear-side shots |

Putting the "heaven" in Heavenly Sword are these screenshots from GamePro (just in case the watermarks didn't make it obvious enough). In celebration for their May 2007 issue's cover story, they're going to be releasing a couple of screenshots of the said PlayStation 3 title for the next couple of days this week, and today, we get to see the first batch of 10 pics.
Here, we see shots taken from what seem to be gameplay and cinematic clips. What I want you to direct your eyes to, though, is the pic with the statue head being consumed by overgrowth - kinda reminds me of Wat Mahtat's Buddha head in Bangkok; Google it, if you don't know. Lovely like hell (err, heaven, in this case).
Now I've been talking to resident "Weekend Slowdown" mainstay, Ian C., about these pics, and despite discussions of how gorgeous Heavenly Sword's landscapes and facial graphics are, it all basically boiled down to Ian's last statement: "Strategically-placed sword FTW. @_@;;"

oh yeah, and Genji sucks.
i actually got to play Heavenly Sword at E3 last year, and i'd take it's awesome, very God of War-esque gameplay over Genji's poor man's Onimusha gameplay anyday, pretty graphics or not.
these screens look great. not Ratchet and Clank Future great, or Uncharted great, or MGS4 great, but great nonetheless.
for a first generation PS3 game (and it's still first generation, as the game is slated for a Q3 07 release. i consider anything releasing after November to be second generation, anything before is still in that first year, and first generation to me), it looks great.
but again, it's not just about how the game looks, but how it plays. and Heavenly Sword plays very, very well.

To the other who got an email you should be getting urs anyday...

Seriously, the cobble stones aren't even bumpmapped...and the screen of her sliding down the rope totally looks like it's from an old xbox game....
The closeup of the face is nice, but the environments and other details are just not up to par...especially for an exclusive....

Also, is it me, but does the lighting seemed toned down from the HDR goodness of before? If looks kind of... flat in comparison (like an old PC game).

I'm not expecting too much, I just wish they would take their time and make good full featured games.

By the way, Gear's intention was to make a killer first player campaign...yet everyone only talks about online. why? maybe because all 360 owners are online driven shooter enthusiasts? Go kill yourself Lower Common Extent.
In any case, these screens are pathetically small and judging an HD game with this sub-pare resolution would be ludicrous.

So the depth of the game itself may be a bit limited, but what else does one really expect to get out of a game from the racing genre?
Besides, it's got a great online multi-player system which is what saves 99% of the 360 games out there.

I've never played a Nintendo Wii, in fact I don't even know how to play with my own wee and am forced to have my buddies over all the time to show me how they use theirs. In the end I'm the one that gets it (from behind) and they go home very happy.
I just wanted to point out that I'm a flaming bi-polar idiot that can't make heads nor tails of what a good game is (but I give great head and like getting it up the tail) so I just come here to spread my gayness to the rest of the gaming world.

Resistance, the best a PS3 owner could hope for this year, yet inferior to other consoles' offerings.
Motorstorm, Crap! Unfinished and boring.
Heavenly Sword, not sure yet but definately looks like crap!
Lair, not sure yet but also looks like crap.
Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy are the PS3's only hope, before going multiplatform. The announcment will not come until a few months after the PS3 release because of a deal with sony.
PS3 will stay at the bottom of the barrel, where they belong. Most consumers are too smart to get suckered into buying the next betamax. Yeah blu ray sales are leading but PS3 owners are sure paying for it with a horribly depressing game selection.

It does look better than the 360's launch games though, keep it up being a year behind.

Firstly, it's obvious you're not Mister Common Sense. But the idea that certain 360 games are darker to hide low details comes from the least intelligent gamers on forums, gamers like yourself in fact.
It is immediately obvious from previews, reviews and head-to-heads that this idea is stupid and wrong, and a simple adjustment of the TV's contrast and brightness reveals that the textures in 360 games are equally detailed (of course, when I say a simple adjustment, I mean for the average gamer, since it's way too complicated for you).

But this is not a PS3 launch game, and it's been in developement since 2004. :|

F*ck the XBOX 360. Bill Gates slept with my mom (who's a whore by the way) and now I can't get her to buy me any more PS3 accessories, games, or blu ray movies. I need them to suppress my memories of getting pummeled in grade school, high school, and my job at EB games. I hate everyone!

First off, let me start by saying that I own both consoles:
[1] PS3 - bought in Feb 2007 - own RFOM, have played Untold Legends, Motorstorm demo (game is checked out at local Blockbuster's), and am currently playing Oblivion. Also own a few Blu-ray movies (Casino Royale's one of them)
[2] XBox 360 - bought in Mar 2006 - own Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, PGR, GRAW, Dead Rising, and Oblivion, and have played COD2, COD3, and some others I can't recollect at the moment.
I enjoy both systems and their games. I have played GeOW, and think the game rocks. I also think RFOM is superb and quite unnerving at times, esp when the Leapers & Crawlers rush in at you in hordes.
I do have to say this about the screenshots of Heavenly Sword that I see here - that the textures do seem kind of flat, as if there is not enough depth. Then again, this screenshot is not my 40-in HD TV screen, so I could be mistaken. Also, if there is an issue with the graphics, I do hope that it's taken care of before release.
That being said, in the PS3 vs XBox 360 issue, I stand firmly on the PS3 side, even though I do enjoy my XBox 360 and its games. There are a few reasons for this:
1) Technical Aspects: I'm a Software Developer (not games) and too often I see products getting go-live or released before sufficient testing, and I can say this about PS3 - to the best of my knowledge, PS3 has relatively few or no technical issues, while the 360 has more than its share of these - noise while playing, humongous ugly Power Supply which must be kept in an airy space at all times for it to survive, poor DVD play (I have compared this myself, so don't bother coming back and saying that I'm just putting down what I've read on other websites), and several times, when I try to play a game, it will come up with some weird error saying that this DVD is meant for an XBox 360 and should be put in one. I've not listed the red rings error, even though, judging by posts on the Internet, and local news (I live in Chicago and read that one person actually sued MS for this) because I've not encountered this issue yet. As compared to this, since I've bought my PS3, I've played it quite extensively - RFOM twice, UL, Oblivion, and the total number of times I've encountered a disc-read error on the PS3 is 2 times.
I personally think that the 360 is a product which was rushed to market SOLELY to get a headstart, and they hoped that most issues would be fixed by the time PS3 came out, and that, as people have a short memory, they would have forgotten all the issues that the 360 had when it came out and had for quite a while. Apparently, judging from the adulation that XBox fanatics give to their console of choice (or maybe console of necessity - depending upon their wallets), Microsoft was right. Thus, even though Microsoft took the same approach for the 360 that they adopted for all versions of their Operating Systems (Release First, Fix Later), they seem to have succeeded for the time-being.
And this is my gripe about the system, that a system like 360 which had a lot of bugs, and is currently ahead just because it rushed out the door first (it is my belief that had both come out within weeks of each other, even with the price difference, people would have been forced to choose between the PS3 & 360, instead of buying the 360 as it was the only one out; as it was, when the Wii & PS3 came out, it was too late for people who had already invested 400+ USD to spend 500+ more, thus resulting in the Wii's popularity at launch), is causing a superlative piece of hardware like the PS3 to be ignored by non-exclusive developers. The reason I say this is because in any non-exclusive game, the Least Common Denominator wins out in terms of graphics, and sadly, in this case, it is the 360. Don't get me wrong, the 360 is a very good piece of hardware and firmware - it's just that it could have been better. Right now, and at least until the next generation of hardware, the PS3 is the better piece of hardware.

those screens looks garbage. yes im a sony fanboy but this is just garbage looking. how do you go from those in game clips to this? i know screenshots dont really represent the actual game very well but those screenshots are balls. they couldve given us better ones.
and the environment does sux.
and gears's visuals are waaaaaaaaay overrated.

Hmmm, what are you trying to say? It's not that they don't know how, it's that there's NO NEED to adjust them. Hence I agree with Gamer on this point.
I've seen numerous gamers on this forum claiming that the 360 looks darker in multi-format games because the devs are hiding lower resolution textures. I've seen this said about Armoured Core 4, COD3 and a few other games. And yet, you can take screenshots of the 360 and PS3 versions of those games, adjust the contrast and see that the textures are the same!
So this claim doesn't come from available facts, it comes from those who are too insecure to accept that maybe, just maybe, the colours and contrast are a little better on the 360 than the PS3. This may be due to the GPUs, it may be due to the port (since VGA output on the 360 also makes games look a bit washed out), but whatever the reasons, the graphics of these games are richer on the 360 compared to the PS3.
