Heard Through the Netvine: PS3 Has A Secret Hardware!

ps3Will the PS3 have an Eye-Toy like innovation? Yes! If rumor of Sony's secret weapon for the PS3 is not grossly exaggerated. The buzz says Sony has been involved with Prime Sense, an Israeli company that invented a technology that allows computers to see in 3D and grasp an understanding of the world based on sight like humans do.

Prime SenseÂ’s interactive, plug-and-play, multi-platform device has the ability to see, track and react to user movements outside the computer without change of environment or wearable equipment. According to the reliable source (we haven't met a source who claims otherwise), Sony will have a PS3 peripheral using this incredible Prime Sense technology but designed for in-console gaming actions. If true, the PS3 really is a bargain after all!

No suprises if it makes it's way onto the PS3... perhaps the Eye-Toy HD Camera... or something of the sort...

If any company can use it.. it's sony.

Once again, sucks to be microsoft. Their uber-webcam isn't uber at all.

Eye-Toy was and probably still is the most innovative peripheral for a console. Great piece of hardware.. and you'll understand when you have a bunch of people playing ... can get a bit dull when playing solo... but with a crowd... priceless entertainment.

Can we please have 1 news item about the PS3 that doesn't end with "so it's not that expensive afterall", you're fooling no one!

Its not expensive in the fact that you get what you pay for. And won't this be sold seperately anyway, so its not like it helps to bring the price down. I don't care anyway though, since I have two 60 GB preordered. One for me, and one for someone on Ebay who doesn't want to go to the store to get one.

i'd say ps3 is worth the money, but it's still quite dear. it costs a lot, but not more than its worth.

this article appears to be describing the eyetoy, what exactly would this 'secret' piece of hardware do differently to the eyetoy?

you know what would be cool? a ps3 controlled robot, or a psp controlled robot, with a little video camera and things... it would be expensive though.

wow so sony is working with a company that produces 3d image sensing and all you sony fanboys automatically think it is going to be included free? Thats kind of sad.

Why would it be free!?

It is just an amazing thing, and this once agian proves that the PS3 is the only REAL 'next gen' console!

And look at youself, before calling someone a fanboy! idiot!

No one assumed it would be free. But I think we assume that it'll be included as part of the next gen eye toy technology. Eye toy is made available fairly cheaply with games that use it, or you can buy the game by itself if you already own one. Plus even the current eye toy has some nice functionality, if this 3d perception system were made part of it, it'd be a huge jump for Sony's little peripheral.

# just to clarifyGuest 2006-06-23 05:46
I've been hearing this argument alot on digg and other reporting news sites and i thought i'd clarify here. A camera that can fully identify , track and understand your movements is A LOT different than being able to real-time follow a stick.

Because i was hearing a lot of stupid "it's just a more expensive version of the wii-mote" on a bunch of different sites, so i thought i'd squelch that here.

Well you are right, but that's not real 3D perception. The current eyetoy for the ps2 can already react to your body movements. As for the facial movement, that's a very specific thing that's hardly on calibur with this technology. This technology goes much further by the sound of it, being able to percieve the 3 demensional person and environment that it sees and react to 3d space. A better description is on the company website if you care to look.

I am amazed that anybody would want a camera that has the ability to stream into online. It truly is big brother and even more amazing people are duped into volunteering for it. No friggin way I'd ever have a digital camera that a corporation has the ability to access it's imagery. Think!!!

# yes i saw the same tech for the 360Guest 2006-06-23 08:17
its on youtube, but the tech is really flawed when the girl was demonstrating in from of the cam another person walked by and the tracking sensor switched to the head of the man, i guess the lock on feature hasnt being implemented.

# Next Gen systemsGuest 2006-06-23 16:35
Honestly with this new HDDVD/Blu-ray technology all of the systems are next Gen. The technology switch makes it next gen. Still, I just dont respect sony. I dont respect how they had to remake their system like 3 times in order to steal ideas from Microsoft and Nintendo. The original system didnt have wifi capability, It had a crappy boomerang controller, and made a really good blu-ray movie player, that played games as well. That's it. Then when we all started complaining like "what is this crap" at last years E3 they were like "Oh crap...we screwed up.". And they completely changed thier system to be like their competitors. And even after they did that the wii was still more popular. And the more I research about the PS3 the less I like. I admit the last playstations have been good but mostly because of the games that you couldnt find anywhere else. Now that its pretty much fair game for everybody I dont think PS is gonna reign like they used to. I wouldnt be suprised if they only got 2nd or 3rd place. Cause any game that comes out on PS3 would be more fun on the Wii.

its simple business really, by holding of information to the public and other big wigs like nintendo and microsoft, you are bound to have all the bad publicity. It really doesnt help that their on top right now. If you look back over the past two game gens, the first out always recieved alot of hype and praise while others recieved less and were defiled more. Sony has emulated xbox live (because we asked for it, sega started it and it was inevitable) and the media/information button from the xbox360 in its shape and lighting for the most part, but if you think about it, the psp had a home button first due to its increased media functions, it is now a must. Frankly the globed button is the best design for it, i dont see many other designs working with the conventional controller. The lights? same, a design that works best with conventional controllers. Also all three new consols have the 4 lights. Next the copying of the wii controller, thanks to sony's secrecy, its their fault on this bad pr, it was hinted at at e3 05', nintendo could have caught the hint and decided to pull out all the stops for their own system, which at the time next to nothing was known about. Sony's similarities to their competitors is just a bunch of bs, did we complain when the snes and genisis were neck n neck, or how bout the ps2/xbox/dreamcast, no. If somebody sets the curve, others will follow one by one, Dreamcast started the trend for online, M$ stole the console made it Dreamcast 1.5 with xbl, and now we have the dreamcast 2.0 under the veil of xb360, no one's complaining. Sorry losing track, My point is, that sony has screwed themself's by trying to keep M$ from doing what they did with Sega. Great minds think alike, Nintendo has been a mastermind of the gaming era, their downfall was greed and screwing over thirdparty support. Sony's took what they learned from Nintendo during their business deal(which nintendo screwed over) and took the lead, their fall will be either pricing, bending over to the consumers wishes(no boomerang bring back ds2 remember that?), or microsofts business practices and wads of cash to burn. I miss Sega. Oh and by the way watcher, sony hinted and nudged towards having alot more than what they showed at e3 05. Minus a few things due to heating problems, being sued by money hungry people that have 'immersion patents', and common sense(2hdmi's, 3 ethernets, ect).

And to the blog, go israel! I cant wait to see what it can do.
