HD DVD and Blue Ray Will Have Region-Coding Restrictions |
Ó
If you're looking forward to HD DVD media and players "no region coding" feature, we have some bad news. The DVD Forum's
Steering Committee agreed to form a working group to "develop a
specification and enforcement plan for RPC [Region Protection Coding]
on HD DVD Video, including region map and requirements in consultation
with the studios".If a region-coding scheme for the next-generation optical disc technology is adopted, HD DVD materials purchased in country A cannot be played by an HD DVD machine bought from country B. Current DVDs have the region-coding restriction and most consumers are not happy with it. To get around this they bypass the block by having their players modified or they switch to generic machines from Asian countries that don't impose region restrictions.
Thinking of switching your allegiance to the Blu-ray Disc side? Forget about it! They are already working on an equivalent region coding system for BD discs. In their version, however, the seven world zones will be cut down to three: North and South America and Asia (but not China); Europe and Africa; and Russia, China and everywhere else.

That is a bunch of bs!
hopefully untrue with bluerays or they dont put it in on the games
If blu-ray has it like that it won't matter since North America and Japan would be in the same region.
The UK always get paired with bloody Africa, I'll never import anything from there because it's nearly impossible. Whereas if UK was paired with Hong-Kong I could just go on Lik-Sang and buy my console there. I doubt games will be region free but I'm getting a wii60 anyway not the PS3 and the wii will be region free (i think)
How is this even possible if sony siad that PS3 games from any region will work on there system.
Didn't everyone already know this? PS3 games will have the ability to be "region-free" but the movie studios never said they would. Guess a lot of people had wishful thinking.
Ah gotcha. Thanks.
Sony has no control over what movie studios do with region coding. They have no option but to incorporate the standard into their system. I believe that it will be a simple firmware hack on the BD Drive or a Firmware hack on the PS3 that will allow region-free PS3s. Games however, Sony announced they will not be region encoded. Sony has the right to do this and so they have.
r those arranged in the 1st world countries, 2nd world countries and 3rd world countries order? cause it seems to me like it is it would be better if Asia is changed to just japan, then all the *****ing thailand/indonesia/vietnumb/malaysia ***** can go into everywhere else
"r those arranged in the 1st world countries, 2nd world countries and 3rd world countries order? cause it seems to me like it is" are you saying europe are 2nd world countries??! I think you should have respect for europe because lots of the stuff you depend on was invented by pretty much the english and the germans. American wouldnt be so big and succesfull if it wasnt for us english :p
they are all a mess. At least BD has only 3 regions, keeping America (South and North) and Asia together, that will make many people happy in my country. It would be alot of language packs in that BD :D Thought Iam thinking hardware manufacturers will find eventually the way to let users turn their system in multi-region ones.
yes, #10, Russia is a third world country. China, in fact, is a fourth world country, so you are absolutely correct. This really doesnt bother me since im from the USA and so far every movie ive ever wanted to own has been made for my region. Im really not into anime at all and thats the only thing i can think of that might not be made for my region, so its okay with me. It kinda sucks for whoever wants to buy other region movies... but how many movies do you like that arent released in America? I dunno there was this really weird guy who used to be my roommate but then moved out cuz no one liked him, he was all into foreign stuff and thought he was cool just because he didnt like america, so any movies he bought (I.E. lord of the rings) he would buy the japanese dubbed version with a different region coding just to be different. I hope this isnt what everyone else does
by the way, that guy didnt even know japanese.... he knew like 4 words, and thought he was japanese. all the japanese kids hated him, too anyway, i just realized not everyone lives in USA, so maybe the issue here is that not all ntsc movies are released in europe, so you have to buy the import dvd AND a ntsc dvd player. is this the case? i just really dont see this being a problem in america
Thank god for torrents
games are region coded differntly than movies. gg.
PS3 games are Region Free... poster 16 is right... And we all know that the movies have Region Coding - although there are only 3 codes as opposed to the 4 or so for DVD. (For blu-ray anyway... couldn't care less about HD-DVD)
I am reading this article in this months EGM called don't trash your old TV. Bacically Its telling me if i dont have a brand spanking new HDTV with copyright protection 0 (with HDCP compliant inputs) I will down the res of the PS3 to 540p with blu-ray content. Is this true? Where can I find out if my TV is HDCP compliant. Its a hitachi from 2004/2005.
