Haynes: Killzone 2 not close to maxing out PS3 |

It goes to show how powerful the PlayStation 3 is that even Killzone 2's high level of detail isn't enough to max out its processor. In a recent podcast IGN's Jeff Haynes reveals that the game uses only 60% of the Cell Processor's SPUs, even during the game's heaviest loads:
It's incredible to see huge levels and see the deferred rendering and note that on all the SPUÂ’s, even on the heaviest load were coming up to about 60%. They weren't coming close to maxing out. They had about 40% of space before they started tripping or saw slow down on some of the processes.
We've heard a lot of stuff about Killzone 2's graphics. A single model in the trailer shown way back at E3 2007 contained the same amount of polygons as an entire level of the first Killzone. BBC said that the realism is so immersive that it might spark another debate in video game violence. And let's not forget it does all this with native 1080i support. I'd love to see the game that will max out the PS3's processor then.
On a different note, Haynes also explains that the preview codes distributed recently were for an alpha build of the game. Killzone 2 has since been polished further, and elements like lighting, cut scenes, glitches, and load times have been optimized.

@native 1080i
finally! my tv only supports up to 1080i and things always look a bit weird when they're upscaled from 720 or downscaled(?) from 1080p

The native 1080i is just for older HDTV's that only support 1080i and not 720p....1080i is technically 540p X 2 (every second line of every 2nd frame is filled in)
If this is true, it just confirms what i've been saying about PS3 starting to come into it's own and that the future is PS3.....even when they max it out, there is still room for optimization....

PS4 will most likely not have this problem, as the chances are Sony is going to stick with Cell, just with more SPU's and a higher frequency...meaning dev's can continue to use the techniques that they developed for PS3, but just use more of them....
If MS is smart, they will do the same thing, stay with the PPC architecture, but with more cores/higher frequency.....but we'll see, they may switch to one of the newer CPU's by intel at that time, which may leave dev's having to re-learn the system again.

The developers of the multi platform games dont take much time working with the games on PS3 as much as they do on 360 unless its a PS3 only title.

1 is disabled for better chip yields (ie Sony has to deal less with cell chips that get 1 defective core) and another is reserved by the PS3 OS

you saying that one is reserved for the ps3's OS is wrong. it's that case for ps3's Linux. you see, if you installed another OS on the ps3, that OS won't be able to access the ps3's main processor because of security purposes, therefore, you can't actually play graphic-intensive games on Linux ps3.
devs have all the freedom in the world with the Cell. it's just that, abusing the processor also means developing a game using a multi-threaded processor. the final product would be top-notch, but the development time will increase two or threefolds as opposed to developing a ame for a single thread processor. and with the ps3 having 7 spe's, lol. it'll take alot of time and alot of programmers to abuse that power. imagine not having to worry if an in-game explosion will lag since the tasks are distributed to the SPE's, not to mention the endless capacity of the blu-ray.

If Microsoft release the next console several years before the PS4 then they'll likely have a major disadvantage hardware wise...
Heck, they might decide to go the other way around releasing the neXt-box after the PS4 (which is less likely) to reap the benefits of better hardware, but would have to play catchup, similarly to how they did in their first generation and how the PS3 has had to do with the Xbox 360...
All Armchair Semantics
I'm sure we'll be seeing excellent titles coming out on the PS3 for a long time to come, and once the Xbox 360 cannot compete with the higher end PS3 titles they'll just have to find other ways to innovate and compete..
