Harvey Norman and the PS3 display that wasn't

Just recently, online gaming communities everywhere have had a field day after a particularly embarassing set of PS3 photos made it to the internet. The photos that we're referring to are the ones that show a PS3 pre-order display booth which was composed of a cardboard print-out of a PS3, strapped onto a fully-functioning Xbox360.

Spotted within the premises of the high profile Australian retail chain, Harvey Norman, the Bondi Junction store became the center of unwanted attention when Kain (aka, "hiredgoon" in Flickr) managed to take snapshots of the faulty set-up and then post it in Flickr before going to bed. From there, the whole incident has practically snowballed, making its way to various gaming blogs, and ultimately, to the people of Sony.

Though Microsoft has declined to make comments on the matter, Sony Australia's Adrian Christie has referred to the display as "alarming news." Considering that the PS3 is yet to be released in Australia and Sony is trying to put its best foot forward in time for the March 23 launch, they may actually have good reason to be at least flustered.

In the meantime, they have already contacted the store, which has since taken down the offending display. The store's proprietor has also apologetically chalked up the incident as "sort of an overzealous merchandising mistake." Rutland Smith, one of the general managers for Harvey Norman, has also commented that the display was possibly the result of a sales person's "innocent mistake."

Smith also explained that they settled for a cardboard PS3 display, as it would have been "extremely expensive" for them if they had to import a real PS3 which they "would have to throw away after March 23."

One good thing to note though, is that Sony has also defended Harvey Norman against claims that the store was deliberately trying to hoodwink people with the set-up that they had. Adrian Christie noted that "The display had been up 24 hours and they were using it as a playback device to show Harvey Norman ads," and that it was not the store's intent to make people believe that what was being shown along with the display was actually PS3 content.

360 being said to be a doorstopper?

wow...haven't heard that one. I have heard the ps3 being called that...mostly because its a 600$ blu-ray player with no games.(besides an fps..funny the ps3 actually isn't an xbox with a fps launch game)

Seems like the fanboy is just upset he bought the console before a price cut was made...along with a larger library of games.

So i bought a worthless 360 the other day. Man was that a waste of money. DVD technology? Wow them and Nintendo should die with the rest of the old legacy systems. But yeah, it would have been fun to play, had it not overheated caught fire. I take that back. Gears of War would have been fun to play because just like the rest of the next gen systems 360 has a whole 1 game thats worth a damn. I also love continuous payments for my systems, like 360s online stuff. What? a PS3 is too much? Oh, well how about we pay way more money over the life of our console just to get the same features?

Lets see that price tag again.... 360 + online + HDDVD for about 5 years. Lets say a nice estimate is $800. Compared to the 20gb PS3 which includes just as much... 500$. Wow my door stop was an expensive piece of garbage.

Maybe 360 should get together with Zune and just commit suicide? That's right, they should just kill themselves for being garbage.

You are missing the fact fanboy. 500$-600$(without accessories...because i could least ever god damn one for the ps3 too you moron) versus 300$-$400(without accesorries...you do NOT need an HDDVD player and you aren't MADE to buy online)

Went into Game today (uk equivalent to eb). They had a 360 in a kiosk as normal with the 360 controllers sticking out as well, PS3 launched here in march. They had taped a ps3 cutout on the front and were playing a dvd of Gran Turismo HD. Couldn't believe it, it totally sucks ass. Why didn't they just play the dvd on the normal monitors instead of wasting a kiosk? They must be getting money from sony or somet to do this sh*t.

Maybe they showed of the media center functionalities of the XBox 360. :-/

And the cardboard were there so people shouldn't think it were a 360-game. :)
