Harrison on PS3 and Sony's future plans |
Sony's Phil Harrison had a lot of interesting things to say about the direction the Playstation 3 and the industry in general are going when he was interviewed by gaming site 1UP. More than anything else, the official reminded everyone that Sony's new system isn't just a simple videogame console:I think PlayStation 3 needs to stand for gaming and digital entertainment in the living room pushing the envelope of high definition, pushing the envelope of broadband, and of course that includes more than just games. We don't have the announcements that you're probably looking for today, but it is digital data.
As you know, Phil Harrison is the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCEWW, the unification of all of the SCE-whatever regional development studios). So he's the boss when it comes to Sony's development studios all over the world.
He wouldn't go into specifics of his GDC plans - but he clarified that Sony is here not because of its competitors: Sony has its own strategy and plans are not dependent on what Nintendo and Microsoft have up their sleeves.
We have some interesting announcements to make. I think it's no secret that we're going to make a couple of exclusive announcements there. We're not going to slate our lineup just because of competitive activity. We'll continue to plow our own furrow.
Lastly, Harrison talked about the disc format in contrast with digital distribution. According to him, the ability to deliver content through broadband network is the current reality now. But the cheapest and most efficient way is still via the Blu-Ray disc and selling it in retail stores:
This is not to replace Blu-ray disc. This is to operate beside Blu-ray disc and the games that you buy on Blu-ray disc may actually end up being a key that takes you into a dynamic content-lead experience where you meet other people, you see other people's content.

Phil Harrison looks all gay. I think Reggie could beat the ***** out of that little Mother F U CKER
Sony wants to break into your house while you sleep and kill all your dogs and children if you do not embrace Blu-ray.
Reggie looks very weak. LoL, a wii fanboy trying to act tough. How cute.
HAHA ...''LoL, a wii fanboy trying to act tough. How cute.'' That made me laugh!
They better do somthing faast. The PS3 is a paper weight right now. They said it would do all kinds of stuff and when you get the thing it does less than the PSP.
PS3 owners don't need to slag off the competition because they KNOW they are superior. Xbox and Wii owners can't beat the best so they try to bring it down with crappy comments. I pity you.
Yeah, even though we have our fair share of immature children; the Xbox 360 fanboys are definitely the worst out there. There's a famous quote that goes something like: Sometimes, defending a argument with false information is more harmful then the people against your side. Or something along those lines. What I'm saying is that you Xbox 360 fanboys make your side look like it's full of nothing but immature retards that have nothing more to say then LAWL X360 RULES, It culd be beter on the 360. Or: Lol halo copy.
i bet reggie can woop his gay ass blindfolded sony give up u already lost
With the install base of PS3 going larger and larger everyday, Blue-Ray DVDs are not now outselling HD-DVDs at most retail stores. (I should know, a friend of mine is a Manager for Best Buy and told me). Sure the selection of games for the PS3 is poor now, but a lot of PS3 owners see the value of the Blue-Ray player that this system is capable of. A lot of PS3 owners are buying Blue Ray DVDs. Given that the PS3 has only been out for 5 months now, it has made a huge impact in the sales of Blue-Ray DVDs. If you do not believe this, then just google Blue-Ray DVD sales trends. I totally agree with Phil about the PS3 being " digital entertainment in the living room"
Check out AVSforums.com to see how the real Blueray vs HD-DVD war is shaping up. Bluray has had a one month surge and went ahead of hd-dvd, but now they are back on par with each other. And the previous year saw hd-dvd outselling blueray @ 6to1. Also many studios are still encoding in MPEG4 vs VC-1. Everyone knows that vc-1 is the better codec. Now look at all the duel format players coming out. And any sell respecting videophyle will not put a ps3 in his component rack. And by summer we will see the chinese hd-dvd players coming out at under $300. Im not saying the PS3 will die, but its definitly on shaky ground. And the HD-DVD vs blueray war is far from over. Blueray still doesnt have the quality as hd-dvd.
the ps3 does not reign on my living room. Vista home Premium and the Xbox360 media center. Ps3 needs some streaming capabilities. nothing beats the XMB, imagine browsing all your media files with the convinience of XMB. i mean the 60 gig already has wifi.
I am not to technical as to HD-DVD vs BR-DVD, all I have to go by is what the consumers are today. The PS2 (two) has the largest install base of the previous game consoles. The PS2 outsold all other consoles for the xmas 2006 season. Even if half (I fell it will be more than that) upgrade to a PS3 (most people will since the PS3 can play over 99% of PS2 games), that is a huge install base for Blue-Ray DVD players. Not all PS3 will even use their PS3 as a blue-ray player anyways. For me personally, I feel that both formats will live on and the best DVD player will be the one that can support BOTH formats. (yes there are even some out today) Trends have their spikes and peaks as well as there declines. (I worked in retail for over 20 years so I do know a lot about trends). All I am saying as the Sony PS3 starts to get more and more positive news (and it has been lately) consumers will not be afraid to take that system home. Sure it has a few issues now, but hopefully Sony can hammer them out. Hopefully Mr. Phil Harrison will have some more good news at the GDC.
