Hardly any MMOs in consoles? Blame Sony and Microsoft |
Ó
There's no denying that some of the most addictive games out there are MMOs. But if you find it frustrating that you can't have them on your beloved PS3 and Xbox 360, blame Sony and Microsoft. According to Star Trek Online captain Craig Zinkievich, the two publishers don't understand console MMOs, making it difficult to bring the games to their respective systems.
As far as console power goes, no problemo. The PS3 and and Xbox 360 are well-equipped with the right stuff to run MMOs. The problem lies, according to Zinkievich, is that Sony and MS don't quite get the business side of console MMOs. "When it comes to the business, I'll be honest, the business part of bringing MMOs to consoles has been really sticky," Zinkievich told Eurogamer in an interview.
Trying to get Sony, trying to get Microsoft to really understand MMOs; really understand what needs to happen for MMOs, and then figure out all the business aspects of those games, has really been a difficulty for all of the MMO developers.
In fact, the only reason that Final Fantasy XI, the only MMO on the Xbox 360, was possible was because "so many exceptions were made." Zinkievich added that getting the the platform holders to understand the network technologies needed have been "the really big hangups".
For now, Cryptic hasn't announced which consoles will Star Trek Online be playable in, but the PC version is expected to come early next year.

The reason why I don't play MMOs: I've already payed for the game, why pay more to use it every month.
Not all mmo's are monthly paid. I prefer PC games over consoles. Si this isn't a big issue.
"the business part of bringing MMOs to consoles has been really sticky"
but really tho, they need to get in gear! MMO's will surely bring the a crap load more money
World of Warcraft adds in major changes to the game and Blizzard constantly releases balance-addressing issues to make the gameplay fair.. You also get a high quality game, good customer support (for me anyway), and it's almost like a new game every time you roll a new character because every single one is unique.
Guild Wars is free to play, and it was a great game when I played it (in 2006), I'm sure it's gotten better, but if you jump between MMOs you'll see where some of the free ones lack in what the paid ones have
Not a fan of the genre personally. The only one I'm even remotely looking forward to is DC Universe Online and that's because I like DC characters. Hated Guild Wars and World of Warcraft when I tried them on my PC and is one reason I gave up gaming on PC in general except for the odd indie game now and then.
I'm calling bs on his reasoning. After playing the Mag beta, I don't think that networking is the big problem with Sony or MS. I'm betting it has more to do with the makers of the games wanting their own monthly payments. I could be wrong. I'm waiting to see if there is a fee for FFXIV or DCU when it hits PSN.
I played Angel Love online on the ps3 and it sucks. I'm kinda used to using keyboard and mouse setup. Using the analog stick to point and click to where you're character is going is really hard. Typing, using skills with just the controller is another downside.
Ah geez, the finger pointing game. I normally hate that one... its always someone elses fault for your own lack of success. Thats just a generalization though... but still, obviously the consoles are going to have protocols that need to be followed. Either hike up your skirt and take it (then create the damn MMO), or whine about the rules and play the finger pointing game. This is all just pure opinion still though on my part.
i want monster hunter on ps3 mmo that would be awesome, stupid wii game and psp with adhoc only, blame capcom
Is Phantasy Star Universe for the xbox 360
i refuse to pay to play it online. ALL online gaming should be FREE... specially games like FF11 & FF14.
I completely understand the need for the monthly fees, eventually game sales will drop off but they still need to support the game, and MMOs require a lot of frequent and drastic changes. But it doesn't feel cool paying for the game AND the online fee. Ripoff
Make the games free to DL and keep the monthly fee. I might play them then
Not sure what you've been waiting for, seeing as how FF14's own website says "Fee: TBA"...
Also you have the payment thing the wrong way around, it's MS and Sony wanting too big a cut of the profits from third party MMOs
Not gonna comment on regular games and XBL vs PSN, but MMOs are completely different from any other type of game. They require constant updates and support from the dev, plus the servers they run on cost a sh*tload per month. MMOs could not exist without some kind of fee, be it a monthly fee or microtransactio ns (and usually the games supported solely by microtransactio ns suck)
I play Phantasy STAR Universe on my 360 and it costs 10bucks per month. The demo version on the 360 is plagued with scammers and spam.
Only serious people apply to MMOs. People who still scam are dealt the ban. And since we pay..it happens rather swiftly.
I disagree. GuildWars kept Up and Running for five years and ever year had major expansions you had to buy. Blizzard doesn't need as much money as it's getting.
