Hack(ish): Play PS2 backups on your PS3

PS3 hacked - Image 1An intrepid gamer who goes by the handle "pizzag" in the afterdawn forums claims he has stumbled upon a means for PlayStation 3 owners to play backup PS2 games on their big black console.

Pizzag clams that around US$ 5 was spent, and that the process that he went through was quite easy for him. Of course, in this case "easy" means breaking open your PS3, voiding whatever warranty you've got with Sony. "Easy" also means engaging in some soldering, which could lead to a less-than-functional PS3.

We can't give you the detailed process, for obvious law-based reasons. However, the fact that it is now possible, makes this newsworthy and quite necessary to note ... for the same obvious reasons.

» what the hell?

It bricked my console! It's all sony's fault! Damn sony and their shoddy manufacturing! I'm posting photos and my story all over the web!

by loempia - 2007-05-16 00:47
» wtf

what happened? If you've posted your story somewere please post a link here

by loempia - 2007-05-16 00:51
» very cool!

I don't get timid and 'I look down my nose at you' attitude with wich this news is brought. I can immagine qj is afraid to post news linking to project wich may be used to pirate games, but you've got to understands that consoles are also a (mostly) cheap bulk of hardware with wich experimenting is, for me, just as much fun as playing games on it!

Come on, tell us what we want to hear! Otherwise qj will be put in the same spot as digg.com a few weeks ago.

» ...

At least QJ & MaxConsole did the right thing and gave credit to the maker and where it came from, whereas a certain other PS3 "News" site totally stole Pizzags intellectual property, edited it, gave no credit to who did it, where it came from, made it seem they made it & without any permission to do so....

» this isnt any thing new

come on its easier to play backed up ps2 games on the ps3 than it is the ps2 all you need is a copy of your countries swap magic. the ps3 reads this a genuine game. all you need do is lift up the case and take that out and put in the copied game. simple as.. and you only have to do this once every time you start the console. simple as.. of course it help if you have removed the drive casing like i have in order to quikly remove and change games... nothing big did it the day i got my ps3

Wow? So quickly? And it's Sony's fault? For what, that you illigally modded your console in a way that can break it, or because you're lying like a douchebag? My vote's on the latter.

» Now cry its Sonys fault when they brick their consoles..

If its true could be the begining of the bricked PS3 consoles, PSP holds the record for most bricked units so far..

by ghgfh - 2007-05-16 20:42
» Think $ony Hater was just giving an example

I think you will find $ony Hater is just giving an example of what 360 owners say when they mess with their Firmware and it bricks on the update etc.

Its not MS fault its your own fault for messing with the firmware, exactly what will happen once people mess with their PS3 and the bricks start happening they will blame everyone and everything but themselves..

» cvb

this is old! ive known about this for a month.

by KUYA - 2007-05-16 21:56
» yes

true but in PSPs case the user is solely responsible for bricking their psp's but the second culprit seems to be not intended by the user its just happens on their own while you play and yes its the RED RING OF DEATH on 360, 310000 units seens this and still grows everyday.

now how about this, i want to see a report on how many PS3 have already been seeing red and not functioning by simply using it normally. just to see the ratio, and oh include the Wii too.

by KUYA - 2007-05-16 22:01
» luv AD?

just wait till they ban your account for no valid reason. great mods in AD too, they dont value anything you have done for them, they value their ego and ban people instead of accepting their mistake. and to AD do not threaten me, you cannot report/sue my ISP, i use internet on the FREE wifi on Mcdonalds dummies.

by KUYA - 2007-05-16 22:29
» yes it is.

but the new one is the invention of a switch which you solder inside your ps3 to make it remember the first original you inserted and hi the switch to toss the original game out while the ps3 retains the data as if the disc is still there and inserting a backup game ps2 game backup confirmed, ps3 game backup on dvd doesnt work, ps3 game backup on blu-ray disk in THEORY should work. now im considering on buying those blu-ray writer because here in japan importing US goods is hard and costly hehehehehe

» KUYA and his rubbish figures

KUYA makes up figures from the top of his head, or perhaps you would like to show us an official link of your faulty 360 figures.

The first 360 had problems but that was because it was out a full year before other systems but was soon remedied, the FACT is the PSP has the most Bricks of any system regardless of whose fault it is...

by rjr162 - 2007-05-22 12:26
» It has nothing to do with being out a year earlier

Even the Premiums or Elite, whatever the black 360 is called, has had a very unfortunate number of console Red Ring out of the box. All my co-workers have 360's, and when I got mine they told me I'd be stupid if I didn't get an extended warranty coverage. 90 days on a $500 console? Damn microsoft trust your equipment if you want me to! Not to mention a few co-workers have had the red ring, one is on his 3rd unit. The one unit will only work if he heats it up with a hair dryer and even then it only works for 15 minutes (Don't ask how the hair dryer or whatever he does works, he read about it online and sure enough it works... long enough to trade it in to EB)
