Habbo Hotel designer says no to online communities on consoles

Habbo Hotel - Image 1Now that it's a cool thing to have the most decorated MySpace account in the neighborhood, and playing a high-level World of Warcraft character makes you popular with the ladies, it is obvious that people love virtual communities. Even video game consoles nowadays want to conquer the online scene, but Habbo Hotel lead designer Sulka Haro doesn't think the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will make it big as far as online socializing goes.

Haro told Games Industry in an interview, "PlayStation 3, Xbox 360...those are for people who are seriously into gaming." Given that, he believes something like Habbo Hotel won't receive success on consoles. One big problem, according to Haro, is the ability to type messages which becomes difficult on game controllers. He mentioned how USB keyboards can be plugged into consoles but people don't take advantage of it.

What of PlayStation Home then, which Sony is strongly pushing for? As Haro sees it, the much anticipated service is "a world with a US$ 600 entry ticket." Apparently, he didn't like Home's feel during the beta. He was quoted, saying:

...in the demo I saw, it was this pretty clean Sony world. You're able to buy a virtual Bravia television that does not break. That's kind of funny, in some sense, but a bit too clean. It was too polished, somehow... It didn't feel like I'd really call that place my home.

Hmmm...

Yeah... it will not be a sucess... thats why is the most anticipated thing in the PS3 and everyone is angry with the delay... "He mentioned how USB keyboards can be plugged into consoles but people don't take advantage of it." Yeah.. thats why the 360 people make the querty keybord attached to the controller to never leave the controller to type a message... that thing is just amazing.. I really like what microsoft do with that keyboard.. I always wanted that PS3 had that ir at least think about something like that but oh well.. everyone will tell them copycats... Anyway they will never said that sony is making a better product than their childish virtual world...

..

I have no interest in the Home network either, but I don't follow the views of Mr Haro. Console communication like this will work, but only for some people, not myself. My problem with the Home network (and even Habbo) are the people who will take it too seriously, like the Myspace nerds. I've never understood why people actually enjoy pretending they are somebody else online, somebody worth respecting. The only people I respect online are the people that deserve it such as programmers and artists, the people using their personal time to make the internet a better place. Jimmy Wales for instance. Not some guy I don't even know but "hey, he has a guitar on his wall, that makes him cool!". Socializing online like this was never my thing either, using an avatar to walk up to people and talk, MSN works just fine thank you, and you don't have to waste time walking around. And the whole achievements thing might sound great, but if you think about it, its just a bunch of stationary models to look at. Oh boy, that lost my interest in 0.5 seconds. 0.5 times the amount of in game achievement models, that was fun for about 50 seconds not even. Seriously people, is this home thing really going to be all that great? I'm more interested in Little Big Planet myself, at least you can create stuff from scratch, sort of...

they do

sony does have one. its $20 and its about the exact same size as the MS one and its wireless only difference is its not attach to the controller but if you put it right next to you i doubt there will be a huge difference. I haven't bought it yet but i saw it at my local gs and best buy.
