Guerrilla on defense: Killzone 2 not entirely gray, has striking difference with other shooters

Killzone 2 - Image 1

Despite what you may have seen or heard of Killzone 2, Guerrilla Games director Mathijs de Jonge states that the game is actually not just full of grays - it's got a wider color palette too. More than that, he says that, compared to other shooters, the difference with K2 is "striking."

Speaking to CVG, de Jonge said:

The first images that we released were just from one level that was still in early production, and I can assure you that the final game has a very rich and varied colour palette - and still manages to maintain that gritty and realistic look and feel.

We've managed to push so far in all areas that this game feels like a next generation game. When I go home at night after a long day of work I play other shooters to relax, and although I certainly enjoy playing them, the difference in graphical quality, production values and the experience itself, is striking.

This coming after the Killzone 2 review that was just published online, it looks like de Jonge is going on defense. But really, does he have to? You're still buying the game, right? We've waited too long now to allow silly remarks from critics about how "gray" a game is or how "nothing new" it is for the shooter genre.

I wonder why people didn't say this about CoD4? That game had nothing new to add to the shooter genre but it was great anyways. CoD4 was real basic and no one said s*** about it. I swear people hate the PS3 for no reason.

» Seriously.

I don't even play FPSs looking for innovation, I play them because I know what they're about and I enjoy them. As long as the game is well put together, I couldn't care less about innovative features.

» totally agree with you papajag

people (360 fanboys, companys payed money by M$ to ***** about the ps3 etc) pick apart anything that is ps3 flame it, but as someone said on another post, if this was a 360 exclusive it would get good posts about it left right and center

» So...

It's bad that Killzone 2 may be all gray...but it's acceptable that most games by Epic consist mostly of shades of brown?

by papajag - 2009-01-12 09:01
» lol

Gears of War is a good game but the whole entire game is mostly brown. Look at the characters faces and suits. I don't really see the greatness in it's graphics either. But you still don't see many sites talking s*** about that.

» KZ2 ftw!

this is the same thing as MGS4... 360 fans were talking crap about mgs4 and then there was that rumor...remember...oh yes... and suddenly all 360 fans were hyped up and "haha we have mgs4 as well, haha ps3 sux, haha...and then...OH WAIT... its not gonna be on 360?... oh mgs4 sux" so i dont expect anything from critics i mean GTA4 got game of the year when there were way better games. So, be your own critic, buy the game, play it, if u like it keep it. What pisses me off is that dumb critics that always go on the MS side and they give mideocre 360 games (halo3) crazy good ratings, and amazing ps3 games (mgs4) midiocre ratings. and that makes people that read that crap go out and buy a 360. but o well im happy that ill be playing KZ2 soon, if its anything like the beta than its a winner. ;)

"they give mideocre 360 games (halo3) crazy good ratings, and amazing ps3 games (mgs4) midiocre ratings."

from gamerankings.com

average rating for halo 3 in reviews: 93.4%

average rating for mgs4 in reviews: 92.5%

halo 3 scored only 0.9% more than mgs4 on average, and even though there were more reviews for halo 3 compared to mgs4, 26 gave mgs4 full marks but only 19 gave halo 3 full marks. so i dont get why you think mgs4 got mediocre scores, cause that's just not true.

still, i haven't played halo 3, but from what i've seen of it, it looks like a great game. if i had a 360 i'm sure i would enjoy it. lucky kz2 is here soon for ps3 to give me my fps fix. :)

CoD4 did not introduce anything new, but everything that was allready there was perfected.

» Color Pallet?

Who the F*** cares about the color pallet? Does the game not look absolutely gorgeous? Because I think it does!! I agree with what naruto said when he mentioned people flaming because it is a ps3 title. People did rip on MGS4 untill they thought it was coming to Xbox 3fixme, then once they heard it was going to the iphone instead... its back to the same old flaming. This game will own, and I can't wait to get my pre ordered copy! WOO

» actually...

even though I prefer the 360 over the ps3 (thinking about selling my ps3 to get a 360) I didn't find Halo 3 that good, would have rated it an 8/10, while MGS4 was really good though overrated by ps3 fanboys (it deserves a 9/10, not more not less). Also... yeah GTA4 wasn't either that good as clamored, definately shouldn't have been GOTY in so many sites and magazines. In my opinion no game in this gen hasn't really been a big breakthrough, and the quality of games lower every gen which is really sad. I for once don't expect Killzone 2 to be as much as its hyped. Guerrilla Games isn't that good of a company, the firs Killzone sucked even though i was advertised as the "Halo killer". Plus this people are just caring about graphics which isnt what a great game is all about. Patapon for the PSP doesn't have awesome graphics, but it's awesome. No more Heroes for the Wii doesn't have amazing graphics yet it's great. Fallout 3 didn't have in my opinion really killer graphics yet it was an awesome experience. Now we look at Far Cry 2, that game has graphics better than what I've seen from the Killzone trailers, yet it wasn't a good game. Crysis (the first one) can achieve uncomparable graphics with a very powerful computer, but no matter with what graphics the game wasn't good at all.

I see that Killzone 2 will be a good game, but it's way too overhyped to what is really going to be and many will be dissappointed...

varied color pallet? c'mon the game is just amazing as it is. but I can see what he means by that. I've seen a SPOILER video showing the intro of the game, the colors look extremely different from what I saw in trailers.

Anyway, I'll definitely get this incredible looking game the day it comes out, and I bet it'll live up to the hype.

» Mmm...

KZ2 may just be "grey" but it's still the best damn grey I've ever seen!

by chessboxer - 2009-01-13 01:53
» True

I don't really know what people expect when the environment (probably most of the planet) is supposed to be an industrial waste land with a toxic atmosphere and many of the levels (at least from my 2 beta experiences) take place at night.

by superjake - 2009-01-13 03:27
» Haha

Exactly! Plus I hate it when games are all over the top on colours. I mean look at Unreal Tournament. There's so much colour in it that it looks like a kids game at a first glance :/

by chessboxer - 2009-01-13 03:54
» @ anhero

I think it was the media that called/heralded Killzone a "Halo Killer", not the developers.

I was lucky enough to be in 2 out of the 3 beta phases and the multiplayer is a lot of fun. I much preferred it to COD4.

As for graphics, that's something I hear a lot of people screaming about when it comes to Gears 2. None of the reviews mentioned the borked multiplayer that is awaiting a patch with many, many people waiting much longer than 5 minutes for a multiplayer match but it is classed as an amazing game and the best looking one on the 360.

If people rave about COD4 for it's multiplayer, then the same will be done for Killzone 2. I'm just hoping that the single player will be longer than the 3hr COD4 campaign. It was fun the 1st time, boring the 2nd and I have no interest in doing it a 3rd let alone it's so-so multiplayer.

by platon - 2009-01-13 07:10

Like you said.

I hope the reviews will destroy the haters! And give us a super great game! (9.5)

i agree! what the hell people expect?!

i don't remeber war looking like a play house..

If you've decided to buy the game (like I did way back in 2004) then you won't really give a damn what any media or fanboys say at all. I'm buying it. That's the end of it. Of course, everyone needs something to mindlessly fuss over though.
