GTA IV's PS3 version to have multiplayer support after all |
Ó
During the latest Major Nelson podcast featured on the Xbox Live website, Microsoft's Vice President of Interactive Entertainment Don Mattrick mentioned that the multiplayer elements of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox 360, PS3) might possibly be an Xbox 360 exclusive. While discussing the details for the upcoming title's Xbox 360 version, he let slip a subtle comment which may lead many to believe that the game's multiplayer support will be an exclusive feature on Microsoft's next-gen console. He was quoted saying:
It's an amazing piece of software, and I'm really excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support - again, that's something that's unique to 360. We think consumers are going to love that, and it's going to create what I would describe, again, as the premium experience on our platform.
However, it was confirmed that this rather confusing statement was merely an honest mix-up on Mattrick's part. Rockstar made a follow up statement to CVG saying that "both versions of Grand Theft Auto IV will have an online multiplayer component".
PS3 players should breathe a sigh of relief now and be content with the fact that all the major features will still make it on both versions of the game. The only real difference between the two consoles would be the episodic downloadable content which was confirmed to be an Xbox 360 exclusive.
In any case, everyone should be expecting Grand Theft Auto IVto hit stores this April 29. In the meantime, make sure to keep coming back for more updates from the game as we get them.

BTW, I never saw anyone claim that the 386DX (MS) was better than the 386 SX (PS3)...nor did anyone care. The thing that will separate the two system is the services they offer. Nothing more.

never happen since the 360 version almost always outsell the ps3 counter part. The ps3 would look better if it was the lead console, which it is not so tough luck.

Also FYI the DMC4 on the PS3 is out selling the 360 version by 5-1 in Japan and Pal regions. And lets wait for the U.S, its not going to look pretty.
So stop talking $hit.

It was MS's lies in the first place that convinced me PS3 was more powerful. They'd have no reason to lie if PS3 was indeed inferior.
This is the article:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/617/617951p1.html
It's filled with lies. Like MS's claim of "The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times."
That only applies to 10 megabytes of it! The rest is faster on PS3.
"Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors."
SPUs/SPEs are not DSPs and are praised in almost every developer interview I've read.
"The Xbox 360's CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one."
Actually due to the lie about SPEs/SPUs, their performance counts towards general purpose computing power and Cell kicks 360s ass.
"The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3's."
Then why is nVidia claiming PS3s GPU is more powerful than 360 in it's entirety?
In conclusion, EVERY advantage MS claimed was a fabrication. If 360 was indeed superior, MS wouldn't have to lie like that.

and i thank rockstar for not gimping the ps3 version, and yes those downloadable contents are absurd, i myself also hate paid ps3 dlc, they should have included it in the game in the first place or should be free. fy to microsoft for sucking more money from clueless xbox 360 bots.

And as for the comment about the 360 version being ported from the PS3 version, I don't think it's correct. I think they built both versions from the ground, however I can't say that I'm completely sure of it, so I let it be.
What I DO know is that Houser said the 360's DVD medium has caused trouble due to its small size, whereas the PS3 version was causing trouble because it took time to develop the game for the PS3. So, flamers could go on forever about what caused the delay, but both sides must know that both sides caused the delay in one way or another.

It's not as simple as that. The faster embedded memory does give the 360 certain advantages over the PS3's GPU in certain areas, however it's not as clear cut as mentioned in that article because overall, the performance of the two GPUs are similar (with the 360's having the edge).
It's interesting that you accept this article isn't to be trusted as it's based upon MS's analysis of both consoles, and yet you seem willing to believe the PS3's GPU is more powerful just because NVidia says so. :| The facts are, devs _working_ on both consoles says this simply isn't true! Some say the GPUs are equal, others gives the 360's GPU the slight edge, none say RSX is more powerful.
"Actually due to the lie about SPEs/SPUs, their performance counts towards general purpose computing power and Cell kicks 360s ass."
No. The general purpose power of the 7 SPEs are negligible compared to the PPE and the 3 cores of the 360's CPU. The SPE's strengths are purely in their arithmetic performance. Hence to refer to devs again, all working on both consoles accepts the 360's CPU has more general computing performance compared to Cell (by about a factor of 2), whereas Cell has more arithmetic performance (again by about a factor of 2). Since ALL games are a mixture of general and arithmetic processing, the CPUs balance out overall, with the CPU of either console capable of outperforming the other depending on the game and how it uses the CPUs.
Sony focused on floating-point performance at E3 2005 to make Cell seem twice as powerful as Xenon overall (the 360's CPU), but this is as much a lie as anything MS have said. They also used the TFLOPS comparison to make BOTH the CPU and GPU of the PS3 seem twice as powerful as those of the 360, which again is untrue, and therefore also a 'lie'.
Hence it's no use pointing the finger at MS whilst ignoring Sony's claims. They are both going to make out that their console is superior. That's to be expected.
Instead, listen to the devs who are working on BOTH consoles for the facts, don't listen to Sony, MS, NVidia, ATI etc.
For example, Criterion are a Sony-leading multiformat developer, so you'd expect them to be as unbiased as possible but perhaps lean towards the PS3 slightly. And yet in podcast 15 where they compare both consoles, they come to the conclusion that both console are equal in terms of power!
