After having taunted and teased us for the longest time, the much-awaited trailer for the equally-much-awaited game Grand Theft Auto 4 is finally here! Bound to be released for both the Xbox 360and the PS3, to say that this upcoming game has piqued a lot of people's interest would be an underestimation.
If you guys can still recall, just about a week ago, viewers of the FX Channel were mystified to find a 30-minute advertisement which consisted of the symbol "IV" and a timer which was ticking away in a countdown. Of course, some folks were confused about the whole thing since they tuned in to see an informercial, but for those who have been initiated into the wonderful world of Rockstar Games, "IV" holds so much wonder and promise (promises of more GTA, that is...).
Well, a full week later, here it is! Be one of the first to see what Rockstar has been hiding from us until now, and click on the "Read" link below. It will take you straight to one of Rockstars websites which, until today, has had nothing on it except the same "IV" and timer that North American and Canadian TV viewers have seen on that fateful night.

The graphics look absolutely amazing. Mind numbing really. Im not too sure what I think about the main character but Ive never been dissapointed by any Rockstar game before so Im sure this will be one hell of a game. Now that was an awesome representation of New York in a game, man I cant wait for this.

But why is everyone saying the game looks "amazing"? Everything save for the cars and characters looked really bad, the building models were mostly very low-poly, and the textures weren't very detailed. Just look at the buildings later into the trailer, they have flat windowsills... just a texture, no windowsill is actually modeled. Or look at the trees at 19 seconds, some of the sorriest looking trees I've seen from a next-gen game. Though they did get the lighting right, that looks pretty good. I guess it's not really a bad thing, all the previous GTAs looked like ass even for their generation but they were amazing games. I am going to buy it irregardless of the graphics (and maybe the complaints I have will be remedied by release anyway), I just get a little irked when GTA fanboys say it looks "amazing", it's pretty far from that. Good character models and decent lighting do not = amazing. Though I am definitely glad it's set in NYC again, being that GTA III and its Libery City was my favorite game. No more "living in the hood/ghetto" sh*t like in SA.
I agree with with qwe it didn't look overly amazing to me, but it's a big step from the low grade graphics we got in all the other GTA games.
Rockstar = the *****! Trailer is the single greatest thing to happen in 07...yet. Ill be getting my copy. First in line. THEYRE SO DOPE! They even used part of the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack. Im guessing the time will in between 91 - 98. Due to the GTR that was shown(Skyline knockoff). GREATNESS GREATNESS GREATNESS!!!!!

Doesn't just mean graphically, did you see how much ***** IS TAKING PLACE? Thousands of cars/pedestrians/advertisements, etc. Maybe you have never been to the city, but to see blocks you walk down daily represented so vividly in a game is wild. This just made me interested in the GTA series, I had liked them before, but this will be an addition i MUST buy. I wonder if you can take mission in jersey, my house is like a few exits away maybe I could drive past my crib :p. If not I'll just have to drive past my friends places in NY
when i saw the trailer it reminded me of spider man...maybe because of the city new york..that was funny when that sign said get a life...the main character..i didnt see that coming and also new york...LOOKS VERYCOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ya you guys are saying it takes place in NY... but you do know that all it is is just an updated version of Liberty City with a NY theme. Look around in the trailer, Liberty City everywhere. But ya... I'm loving it already.
For a grand theft auto game yes the graphics do look amazing. Sorry you don't feel that way. There is a lot going on at once and if you remember from the past gtas they all had dynamic weather so use your imagination and picture this game say at night time with all the lights and being chased by police helicopters. There aren't too many games out right now that look much better so chill out. Im sure Im not the only one that thinks this looks "amazing".

although Gameplay is the core,Graphics are an Extremely important factor that no one can Deny the game is looking extremely average,the main characters face is a very low-polygoned i think this game is greatly hyped,i didnt expect much of it since it was multi-platform and they have to tune it for every system,but this is far worse graphicaly than what i though but rest assured,it will sell even if it looked like a PSone game,humans are naive and foolish drones...they will simply follow it for the *****es,drugs and killing [and god knows how many americans love it for that]

OMFG i love the graphics but stil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this was the gayest "hyped up" GTA trailer ever! you see one glimpse of the main character, and he says 10 words that make alot of sense /sarcasm you see no actual gameplay, just pictures of tall buildings WTF?!?!? like im gonna waste 60 bucks to look at F*(*&(& buildings and trains go by i agree(and i know somepeople agree with me) that if gta never made their previous games, and we knew nothing about the GTA series, and this was the only trailer released, none of us would buy it just my 2 cents
This looks like a teaser pretty much....very dissapointing why because they don't show much and its liberty city again, well we hope we can fly to other places....love the graphics, the graphics change when the official game comes out its the resolution that make the graphics look bad. o well will wait until the other trailer comes out.

GTA4 takes place in the STATE of NY. Manhatten/Liberty is just one of the five boroughs. I've seen the trailer at 720p and it's amazing. Don't make your opinion off some low quality youtube video.

What you're seeing are the environment in which you're playing in unless you want to play in a game where the backgrounds all white. This could easily have been mistaken for Saints Row 2 judging by the slightly better graphics? Also what's with next gen games looking like Need For Speed Most Wanted all the time?! Even Transformers has got the same yellow/shadow lighting... Hopefully the controls can be customised in this GTA remake of Liberty City, since it does say Liberty throughout the trailer... Yack-she-mash!
I just really hope it's run better on PS3 than X360. The graphic are amazing. Don't forget that there's lots of thing running in the background while playing. Even the cell processor have a challenge here. Wow when this game will be release, I have no more life!

This is obviously a new NYC inspired Liberty City... It could be an alternative universe... But either way the trailer shows Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn... Anyone who is from NY or been there would know that GTA 3 was a really bad representation of NYC... My guess is the story is about a Russian mobster in Brighton Beach... If this is indeed the real NYC there will very little flying involved... Laguardia and JFK Airport are located outside of Manhattan island... My guess is that if you try to fly towards Midtown Manhattan you will be shot down (they do that already in the previous games)... That would be a believable non controversial way of allowing flying in the game... BTW there is more to NY state than just NYC... And theres no evidence in the trailer that its located anywhere near the outside of the 5 boroughs of NYC... Its cool that it will be centered in a NYC like city... And the fact that Rockstars headquarters are located in NYC, i have faith that they will do NYC more justice than GTA 3...

This is where blu-ray will have the advantage. If the last gen GTA games filled up a DVD9, I can only imagine this game being on 2-3 DVDs for the Xbox360.

It wasn't that long ago when fanboys here were acting as if everything will have to be squeezed and compressed into ONE DVD9 disk on the 360, leading to poor quality in games, or content deleted for 360 versions of multi-platform games. And yet Some of the best games last gen were multidisk games, including on the PS2, so it's not a problem this gen for the 360. Blu-ray's advantage here is simply convenience. Instead of multiple disks, you have one.
Frankly I was disappointed [and i watched the hi res trailer not-the crappie utube one]. Not hate'n, I love GTA. But the hype was bs, firstly that the site crashed once the trailer was due, second that the trailer did not hint at all to new game-play/physics/ai/scope/multiplayer or anything important besides where the setting is going to be and who likely will be the new main character, and lastly the visuals did not live up to my expectations for what really should have been a revolutionary step up but looks evolutionary. If you have a whole state to roam in though, these graphics might be acceptable even if they are pretty weak, but the important thing is wtf is the game play going to be like, no sense getting excited till we hear about that. At lest on the plus side, looks like the strong story telling is still a focus of the series. [I was hopping to be Yakuza this time, but Russian will do] Sure the game will be great but this trailer was bs. I'm not a fan of The Getway, in fact I never played the last two games, but from what I've seen Studios London is going to eat Rockstar alive this time. The realtime stuff I've seen from the getway ps3 owns what this trailer shows of GTA in terms of visuals, and the direction we see Studios London taking with Eight Days in terms of game-play leads me to suspect if they carry those trends over it in the getway also they might surpass GTA unless rockstar adds a very strong physics engine. Hey QJ, how about some side by side Getway3 / GTA4 comparison shots? Can add crap like saints row and crack down if you want too, and Mercenaries 2. See what's what.

You say that BECAUSE you have not played the first 2 Getaway games. ;) Besides, the Getaway for the PS3 is just a nice tech demo at present, and it's questionable whether they can turn it into a great game. Let's wait and see :). BTW, great graphics is always welcome, but gameplay IS more important, and the GTA series has a history of delivering great gameplay, unlike The Getaway series.
Well it might look impressive if you own a PS3 or Wii but having the 360 I think this game looks average compared to games already on 360, but whatever have to wait and see.

No I think it's Liberty City (the ship and the ferry say so) but it's damn close to the original.
A bit disappointed that it's set in Liberty, but it looks like it's bigger this time. I saw Coney Island (the coaster) Statue of Liberty and Queens or Brooklyn referenced in that trailer. It's taking place in the present day I reckon - but I hope that you can fly to other cities such as Vice City, there's no point having a bigass airport if you can't even use it. It's a stylish trailer though. To anyone who doesnt know the music is from 'koyanisqatsi' and the speeded up sequences of buildings are copied from a sequence in the same movie.

GTA's werenever fantastic graphics but in my opinion GTA games always had a particular feel to them, a X factor. Sure the graphics arent great on the buildings, but why waste disc space putting windowsills on buildings that tower high above your head? GTA has never made a particularly bad game and this one doesnt look to be an exception. Also the line "maybe things will be different here" could be more than a gd ending line. I dont know, but this is a lot different to any other GTA game release.

every game that comes out 4 both systems,ps3 always have extra stuff on it,4 example fight night round 3 on the ps3 has a first person fighting mode,new punch called the flash ko,there more detailed,my brother got fight night on the 360and we compared them,so im not just making this up,and on ps3 when u fight online u can win belts just like in real life,on 360 it just keeps stats of your rec and that all,ps3 keeps track of everything,and when i say everything i mean everything,ps3 has espn radio on it,so if u like sports,u will like that,and all this stuff i names the 360 dont have

@ qgi just for the record: Liberty city was based on New York City, and given the power of the playstation 3 and the time passed since the first appearance of LCS in GTA 3 I think it will be closer to NYC than to LCS.

Budget game? Will the elite make it have the ps3 features, probably not. The elite is not going to hurt the PS3 because you can just buy any size hdd for the ps3, even the basic ps3 has hdmi. The elite will only hurt other 360 sales. By the way when fight night first came out it was a full $60, not budget. Think about it 360 had to do something to compete with the ps3's hardwear, period.

Well, true enough I can't be a fan till I played them, but the reason I never have is that the reviews from my friends and the press where enough to keep me from even renting them. Which says something right there... It's my understanding studios london are officially working on 'Getway' for PS3 as they simple titled it, and the trailer looks similar to the tech demo but with better lens effects because the view is all scripted. I was not implying the game is going to be better then GTA just because it might look better, your right it all comes down to game-play [but like i said the same company is working on Eight Days and the game-play they hinted out there looked pretty intriguing, even for a pre-rendered [i assume] trailer], what I'm saying is Rockstar left a door open imo 'cause contrary to what a lot of these hyperventilating fan boys say GTA4's graphics [which is more or less all this trailer showed] are not mind-blowing even for a game in this genre. Anyhow, wait and see is best, not like we have any choice anyhow.

How many times does it have to be said, with compression dvd9 is not a restriction at all, here is how it works, its called compression and decompression, to break it down in a simple way the 360 uses the same compresson techniques PC developers have been using for years, On the PC developers will make the game and then use a compression tool to fit the data on dvd9 then when you buy the game you will have to install the game on a harddrive this is when decompression happens and the game is installed on your harddrive and then you can play the game with little to no load times, now on the 360 developers do the same thing but instead of the game being installed on the harddrive the 360 will load the first levels files you are going to play into the systems 512MB ram, there will be load times unlike the pc, but once the game loads it will still play smooth. A quick example, a developer may have a game that is 20 gigs with current compression technology he can compress that game to under 7 gigs maybe more, remember dvd9 is 8.5 gigs, and compression technologies are constantly improving so in the future even bigger games than what I just mentioned could fit on dvd9, without compression xbox 360 would have maybe hddvd or a bluray drive. So there you have it that is the simple version of how it all works, so dvd9 is just fine for games this generation, maybe next generation dvd9 will be inadequate.
it does not matter gta 4 for 300 bucks or gta4 for 500 bucks every body knows gta is going to sell more on 360 period
you think ps3 online is bad? just look at nintendo wi-fi connection. at least ps3 supports most of the features that live supports and is much more reliable than nintendo's service
