Grand Theft Auto IV will run at constant 30 FPS - Image 1

Bad news, good news, more bad news, and more good news for those who are eagerly waiting for the release of Grand Theft Auto 4 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360). A recent podcast from 1UP reveals more info on the game.

Ok, first the bad news: Grand Theft Auto 4 will run at a constant 30 FPS for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Only 30 FPS you say? NBA 2K8 has double that! Well there's the good news for you, if you look at it another way.

Remember that GTA4 is a sandbox game, and you can do a lot of things as well as go to a lot of places. A lot things can happen all at once in that wide, wild world. 30 FPS is great. Always look at the brighter side of life, so says Monty Python.

Now, on to the other bad news. The PlayStation 3 version, which played a factor in the game's delay, is slightly behind the Xbox 360 version in terms of development. However, the final good news is that both will still be released on the same day.

So there you go. If you want to listen to the podcast yourself, follow the link below. You might also want to take a look at the big GTA4 update posted a while ago in case you missed it. We'll keep you posted.

Thanks to ct-boy for the heads up!

» 30 FPS is not bad at all.

The game is going to rule regardless. Comparing its FPS to another game is like saying the old GTA's sucked because the first loading screen took a while.

:( - I hope its finished for april 29... sigh.

30 FPS was never bad to begin with for any type of game, so this is no big deal. Mentioning NBA 2K8 threw me off for a second. That's like talking about your favorite type of pizza, then jumping to The German Revolution.

» The title

is a little misleading.. I thought it mean't the ps3 was behind in FPS's.

» PS3 is behind

so what the hell, go ahead and release it for 360 now.

i thought thats what it meant too

30fps is just "ok". But you can easily notice the different in frames when its moving at 60fps.

60fps is simply smoother. So while the game will play decent in 30fps. 60fps would havve been a hell of a lot better.

i hope they're polishing the ps3 game, they still have 2 months

» Not bad if

I believe 30 fps is perfectly acceptable as long as there are NO dips! I want it to remain 30 fps during even the most chaotic moments or I'll be disappointed. I like to enjoy explosions but not when they're at 10fps

» "slightly behind"

how is the PS3 version slightly behind, if they are BOTH being released at 30 FPS and on the same day?

by jrm125 - 2008-03-03 01:24
» I thought the same thing

Someone should tell the "journalists" at QJ that a comma is indicative of a continuing thought...try a semicolon next time.

So to clarify the game will run at 30 FPS on both consoles, and the PS3 is behind in its development time line, nothing more.

by Geosondaman - 2008-03-03 06:25
» What I think is...

PS3's development is maybe just 1 or 2% behind 360's development, so it is something they can overcome...meaning the two versions will be finished in basically the same day and be released on the same day.

» ps3 is behind now?

IGN said the ps3 version had less extreme colors (always like that on ps3, dunno why, a thing with full RBG colors and true white can make the color looks the same on ps3 I heard) but had a better framerate. So how can the ps3 version be behind now? I don't understand.

Or it's IGN who lied, or it's 1up. Personally, I don't visit 1UP, so I'll say they are the liars, but it's baised, lol. So nobody know right now. Still, it's wierd.

» .......

but, it will be a very hard and costly work for rockstar to change everything to 60fps.

by na2rul - 2008-03-03 08:25
» 30fps also means another thing

They are really pushing the consoles.

To me 60fps means they are simply not advancing or pushing on the graphics and so utilise the power to framerate such as tekken5 on PSN which of course is aqn amazing game.

But then again GT5 may prove me wrong.

» I think

That this news should come out of the developers mouths themselves, I'd rather not hear things like this from news websites. It reminds me of the magazine buisness, they get paid to make-up storys that look good.

» Read the big picture first

Someone does not know their own language; if a colon is used, then it indicates a list. Therefore, the QJ staffer is correct in the titling of this article.

Think a little harder next time.

» @Ninjiz

Stop being an idiot, 30fps is awesome. Sure it may not be 60fps, but you have to realize that some games require that. Take Burnout paradise for example, there is cars and such going on that it needs that speed. GTA is awesome, and doesn't need all that frames per second to be honest.

Not to mention the fact that the human eye can read 30fps even if there's more, its not that noticeable, its like graphics. Sure if you look hard enough you may spot different things but its nothing mindblowing.

Also i can't see how the PS3 version is slight behind is a bad thing. The positives far out weigh the negatives. Which will be PS3 will get the game and its going to be great, and its going to be released the same time as 360 version.

So i don't see the reason to point that out.

by Stealth! - 2008-03-03 18:47
» Your an idiot

Sony made an agreement with them that both versions will be released at the same time. They paid money for that to agree on it.

Also read, it says behind the 360 development. That doesn't mean the 360 is 100% finish yet.

Read the damn article people, instead of just rushing to post, it makes you look like an idiot.

by jrm125 - 2008-03-04 01:06
» crzycop can't read

Here's a thought. Before you try telling me I'm clueless, learn to read.

There's a massive difference between a COLON and a SEMICOLON. Colons are used for lists, but Semicolons are used for the indication of an independent thought.

I wrote semicolon. Read a little harder next time.

I don't like COLONs.... they stink.

30 FPS has nothing to do with the PS3 development time.
