Grand Theft Auto 4 logo - Image 1We all know how long we've waited for Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto 4 (for the PS3, Xbox 360) to come out - and even painfully endured rumors of an earlier release only to have them squashed again. We just couldn't help but wonder: is the wait worth it? After reading the Grand Theft Auto 4 bit in GamingExcellence's coverage of the PlayStation Holiday Preview Event, it looks like it's going to be really worth it.

Why? According to a Rockstar spokesman present on the PlayStation Event, the development team is considering having all of the maps accessible as soon as you start the game. Which means less linear flow of the storyline, and players can knock themselves out in exploring the entire city as soon as they boot up the game. Here's part of the intriguing excerpt:

Rockstar's man on the scene told GamingExcellence that they had begun testing the various plots and that the developers were considering the possibility of having an open world completely unlocked from the start of the game.

It's a very promising game feature. That's not all. Rockstar Games is also working on a multiplayer mode in GTA4 that can accommodate 16 simultaneous players. We just can't wait to see how the full game turns out. More updates to come!

» Not that great

What do they mean this would be a good idea? I think that having all the maps unlocked at the beginning of the game would suck. What I mean is that in SA you only had a certain area you could stay in because you had to unlock it by doing missions for that area. SO when you beat the mission its not like a new gone you unlocked but entirely new area for you to go to. Having the ability to unlock new areas would be alot more fun then unlocking guns.

By the way this is the list of the nerdiest gayest words to say. Pwened, Noob and owned

Well, that's just your opinion. I think that having the entire city available makes the game more realistic, i mean, when your walking around New York, you can go anywhere you want, which is exactly what Rockstar wants to emulate. While im sure there will be a couple of areas that you have to wait to get into, but having the entire city open at the start is a great idea.

By the way, creating a list of the nerdiest gayest words to say is the nerdiest gayest thing to do.

» I think....

It depends on how they do the game, if they do decide to unlock the entire world from the start they should make some areas really hard and you get shot-up quickly, then obvously later on when your stronger and got more guns you can take on those areas.

» do want

i want an entire world to be open for play. i never really play GTA for the story. i just love playing around with the weapons cars and causing mayhem. i dont like the get shot up idea to much. they did that in SA and i would just cheat around it. like you could go to the other island at any point but your wanted level went max, jets would shoot you out of the sky and all of the cops would destroy you before you could have fun and explore. i really hope this idea gets done.

also when does the game come out?

I didnt mean big areas, i meant like 1 or 2 small areas so It will be like a goal for hardcore gamers like myself, im sure the game will be big enough of casual gamers like yourself to blow stuff up, plus the game will feature a taxi service so you will get taken/teleport to where you want to go so exploring will be made easier. The place I get my games from has GTA marked-up for 04/04/08 but its not official yet.

» Great idea

I think its a great idea, one of the best things in grand theft auto games is the ability to drive wherever you want and cause mayhem with rocket launchers, having this from the start means you can get right into it without having to unluck them.

» Um, ...they're thinking of that just NOW?

Forget rumors of early release. If Rockstar is JUST NOW considering opening the entire world at the start of the game ....wouldn't this radical design change mean countless (months) hours of additional play-testing? --What are these guys smoking? Either they're really having hardware problems to solve, or they're really just their own worst enemies (when considering trying to make published release dates).

I agree with Turismo. Mostly gay nerds use those words.

» Multiplayer

Multiplayer only supports 16 players? is that a joke? the current GTA SA on PC supports about 200 players simultaneously? and the whole place is going to be open?, well i don't know about you guys but that really dissapoints me =[

err, you can use cheats to explore around you know... if you just want to cause mayhem, you use cheats, if you want to play the story mode and unlock extra things then you do that, leaving the whole place open is a stupid idea imho.

by nuffsaid - 2007-10-14 03:11
» like I said...

Im a hardcore gamer, I hate using cheats, there is no challenge when your cheating. I will only cheat once the game is complete, as GTA 4 is a big game RS feel taxiing is a good way to get around, it isnt cheating so its fine by me. You sound like a casual gamer who likes to cheat for fun, I got no problem with that but you would probably use a cheat to unlock the entire map anyway.

» Awesome

This is probably one of the coolest thing ever. I mean usually i just play the game to shoot kill and do stunts, but having the whole city unlocked is pretty sweet i can used to the whole city and know how to avoid trouble.

I don't agree Turismo20, not everyone plays the game for its story some people just like killing people and having fun. I always did that but after playing SA to its fullest and getting 100% i liked doing the missions once in awhile. Besides its not very realistic if the maps aren't accessible at the beginning.

I think the guns stores should have every weapon, like you can buy a Minigun for 25,000.

Also i wish you can get adult things from the stores. One of the many flaws in SA.

agree with you fully

who wants to run around for 2 hours before you actually see someone

unless they section the city, i dont think 16 is close to enough
