Grand Theft Auto 4 on PS3 definitely a contributing factor to delay |

Speculations were all over the place after Take-Two announced that the widely anticipated Grand Theft Auto 4 (Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3) developed by Rockstar Games won't make it to retailers on October 2007 as initially intended. According to Rockstar's Vice President of Product Development, Jeronimo Barrera, the game's PS3 version brought up challenges that caused the delay and moved GTA4's release to what was recently confirmed to be April 29 in all regions.
In an interview, Barrera told MTV News, "It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that." Fortunately, he said the issues have been resolved and the PS3 version is now identical to the Xbox 360 version.
Putting delays aside, Barrera touted Grand Theft Auto 4 as the biggest in entertainment for 2008. "I don't see anything being bigger in 2008 in any entertainment," he said. Barrera seemed confident that GTA4 will improve on GTA3 as significantly as the series' evolution to 3D from its top-down 2D roots. "We don't want anybody else to raise the bar for a genre that we created and that everybody else ripped off," he added.

I guess they forgot that MGS2 made way for GTA3.
@Eclipze, he said BIGGER. Bigger doesn't mean anything. It's hype. And, besides, some of us will buy this game because usually this series is a good mix of technology and story.

to LordQuas, he mentioned that the PS3 was a contributing factor for the delay... doesn't mean that the 360 version went flawless or wasn't a "contributing factor" as well or if the 360 was already primed and ready to ship last October.

now i got myself a Blackberry... took me sometime to adjust, cause it's something new and something more complicated... took some period before i've managed to get up to my usual speed that i'm used to on my old Nokia.
does that mean that the Blackberry is inefficient? no... it just means that i have to learn it first.
but even if i had to take the trouble of learning something new, and the initial hindrance that i experience because of it... it's pretty clear in my mind which is the better phone and which one i'll be moving on with.

Hahahahahahahah a.
Why do people think MGS4 is a bigger killer app than GTAIV? The last PS2 version of GTA outsold the last MSG by almost 7 times.

Let's wait and see.

And you can be absolutely sure that mgs4 will sell a lot ps3s when it gets launched not as many as some people hope for but a lot nevertheless.... So rockstar's waiting is very possibly worth it..
Also gta4's sales will go head to head with mgs4 sales (everybody is an analyst right? :)

MGS2 helped the PS2 in 2001 and MGS4 will help the PS3 in 2008!
That's it. On my PS3 i can enjoy MGS4 and GT4.

And besides, I own a 360 (and that's it), but I'm glad that the PS3 version looks identical. I hope it plays the same too, because quite frankly, I'm getting tired of all the fanboys from both sides arguing about miniscule aspects if a game is ever so slightly different between the two platforms.
Get over it and just enjoy the fact that the game is available on your system.

Also, I like the cellphone analogy! that worked perfect. See what MS did with the 360 is pack in more of the same ol hardware (much like a PC would be upgraded) and thus developing for the 360 really isn't much different from the original Xbox. WHere as the PS3, theres a whole new beast to learn, just like the PS2 and it takes devs time to unlock its full potential. Thats why in 4 years you'll be getting PS3 games that are still pushing the hardware further while the 360 has topped out long before due it's insides being utilised to the max. Look to games as your indicator, sure they take a little more TLC and time to polish off, but compare first years PS3 games to first years 360 games and theres really quite a gap between "Next-gen-ness" quality. Which will only continue to be appeaant as the PS3 is unlocked and understood more from a programing point of view.

From the beginning Rockstar said GTA4 will be released simultaneous for the 360 and PS3. They made that promise the day it was announced knowing that one version is bound to hold up the other.
"thus developing for the 360 really isn't much different from the original Xbox. WHere as the PS3, theres a whole new beast to learn, just like the PS2 and it takes devs time to unlock its full potential"
BOTH consoles have potential which will take devs time to unlock. Developing on the 360 is only like the XBox and PC from a software environment perspective, but it's a completely different 'beast' inside, with it's 3 core IBM processor (the XBox had an Intel Pentium) and it's ATI GPU with embedded EDRAM (the XBox had a Nvidia GPU).
It will take years for devs to get the most out of the 360 (like all consoles), and so the PS3 is nothing special or unique in this respect. The issue that trouble devs the most on the PS3 is the Cell processor, but that has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
"compare first years PS3 games to first years 360 games and theres really quite a gap between "Next-gen-ness" quality."
That's debateable, but besides that, the PS3's first year came after the 360's first year, and in many cases, actually benefited from work which had been done on the 360. It's not about the PS3 being superior or the games better (also debateable), but the fact that game technology is ever evolving because each year builds upon the technology and techniques from the previous year(s). So the PS3 first year SHOULD reflect this. It's also true that the one year difference between the consoles is for launch only, in terms of technology and software developement, they are very close to each other.
"Which will only continue to be appeaant as the PS3 is unlocked and understood more from a programing point of view."
Actually, as time passes, more and more of BOTH consoles will be unlocked. Today we see that the early perception of the PS3 being _significantly_ more powerful than the 360 is giving way to the realization that the two consoles are actually very close to each other in terms of power. That will continue to be the case in future.

PS3 and 360 versions of COD4 were identical. it was flawless. No hassle........unlike some who delay.
I still cant believ Valve threw PS3 HL2 for EA to port
Darn lazy(fat!!!!) generation!
Sorry no punn intented

360 is a multi-core, multi-threaded CPU just like the PS3....both run PC'esque video cards, both have harddrives and network cards.....from a programming standpoint they are actually very similar....
The problem ? Mainly that Sony did not develop a huge set of API for 3rd parties to work with....MS did.....so when someone working on PS3 wants to do something like light an environment, they have to write their own code for it....on 360 MS made sure there was a pre-existing API or function for lighting that devs just had to throw their variables into......anything more customized though and they would have to take the same approach as they would have to on PS3....
Not to mention splitting the ram was a big no no......if you don't design your game from the ground up for PS3, then working with that memory conifguration opposed to a whole chunk of memory will always be easier....
Ahh well, as far as the delay goes....who cares....

Also first year PS3 games came out 2 years after 360 and therefore had an extra year of development.....even though PS3 wasn't in production, Devs still had working systems, with all the final specs other then the blu-ray drives, as that's all they were waiting on......so for even an extra year of work....drakes is not better then gears....sorry to say....and that was Sony's biggest game supposedly this winter.....meh...
As UG said, they systems are very close in power, and will just continue that way....there is no special "unlocking" of the PS3....there will be some improvements with optimization but it's not like they are only able to use 2 SPE's and have to "unlock" the other....they are all there and being used, just not properly...
So we will see the same thing for years....games looking almost identical, and occasionally looking/running better on 360....

- Agreed. That is the general perception now, with most Developers still not able to get up to speed on the PS3's architecture.
However, as this is still a perception, this statement of yours "That will continue to be the case in future." doesn't really hold water. Perceptions may change in the future. It may turn out that Developers perceive that the 360 is more powerful, or that the PS3 is way more powerful. It may swing either way, or it may continue. Either way, your statement that the current perception will hold for all eternity is faulty logic.

Devs know the hardware Thinker, they are not confused in the way that some gamers are. So whilst there's still a lot to be explored for both consoles, they do know that the power difference presented during E3 2005 doesn't exist (hence knowledgeable devs soon afterwards stated that the PS3 was only slightly more powerful, whilst the media still held onto the idea that the PS3 was twice as powerful as the 360. 2TFLOPS vs 1TFLOP anyone?).
The point I'm making is that many gamers and large sections of the media focussed on what Sony _said_ the PS3 will be, and ignored devs who stated that the two consoles are similarly matched for power (some even attacking the devs for saying this). Even today some gamers still hold on to the idea of the PS3 being 'way more powerful' than the 360. However, the reality is that it's only slightly more powerful, and therefore over time, such perceptions will have to give way to reality (but there will always be a few who deny it).
We are seeing this today, because the the games speak for themselves, and therefore it will continue in future because of the facts about the hardware, and therefore more and more gamers will see this for themselves. But naturally, that will never stop the long heated arguements over which console has the best graphics and why they are superior to everything else...blah blah blah.

+ like I said before, I dont care about the delay or what this guy is saying (that the PS3 is the reason that the game is delayed), its just I see way better games than this.

If you want one pack of developers to say "wow" at (in a good way lol) it has to be Insomniac. They updated all of the bugs and glitchs out there games. they play online like every week to see how gamers play so they can fix gun damage and other things inside the game (like how they now have the option to turn off the 40mm nades and bullseye tags). Resistance 2 will show us a good update on graphics and show us what they can do onlline (60 player online ^_^)

And thats the fact that the emerging winner will be judged not by 'same in power' but since no console is alot more powerful the 'slightly more powerful ' as you say will prevail.
Today's fierce competition leave's no room for big gaps...So the one with the slightest edge will prevail. On that line the ultimate winner is the ps3.

"the 'slightly more powerful ' as you say will prevail."
Power really doesn't matter that much Constantinecy, if it did, the XBox would have outtaken the PS2 and won last gen and the Wii wouldn't be where it is today, neither would the DS dominate against the more powerful PSP. It really comes down to what these machines are all about, and that's games.

Last gen the PS2 completely dominated the market, leaving the XBox and GC w-a-y behind in second and third place respectively. By the end of this gen, the gap between all three is likely to be much closer than last gen, therefore whilst there will be an overall winner, that doesn't mean the others are losers, since I think all three companies would have done well out of this gen.

When Sony said they'd designed the PS3 for a 10 year lifespan, that didn't mean the PS4 will arrive 10 years after the launch of the PS3.
The Playstation and PS2 have had lifespans well beyond what Sony expected, so this time with the PS3, it's been designed with the expectation of matching the lifespan of Sony's first two consoles.
Therefore expect the PS4 to go head to head with Microsoft's next console.

kk this pisses me off no one is rippinng them off ive had this arguement about saints row well done you created a genre clap and applause its very good but the fact others follow this style and calling them rip offs is like saying greenday are a copy of elvis as he frontlined rock and roll
so really what i guess im saying is go bleep yourself your the type that patents things just to sell off the rights and instead of letting things reach their full potential, you hinder them, go ***** yourself
