Going green? Get a PS3 Slim!

According to a power consumption test conducted by the guys at CNET, Sony's new slimmed down console generally uses less than half the power of the original 60GB PS3, no matter what task it performs. Now that's impressive!

cnet - Image 1

CNET has conducted a test to prove Sony's claim that the new PlayStation 3 Slim is more energy efficient than the previous models and according to their power consumption test:

The PS3 Slim still uses much more power than a typical standalone Blu-ray player like the Samsung BD-P3600, so if you're going to do mostly Blu-ray playback, the PS3 Slim is a real power hog. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 uses about 187 watts while playing a game, which makes the PS3 Slim look like the HD game console for the environmentally conscious. The Nintendo Wii uses a paltry 19 watts, but is standard-def only.

If you've got an older PS3, you might be wondering how much this extra energy consumption is going to cost you over the course of a year. Unless you're playing a lot of video games, the difference isn't that much. If you generally play for about 20 hours a week, you'll save US$13.74 per year using a PS3 Slim vs. an older model. If you're hardcore enough to rack up 50 hours of gaming per week, you'd still only save about US$ 100 over a three-year period. In other words, the PS3 Slim may make you feel better, but it won't make much of a difference in your bank account.

Thanks to Versus for the heads up!

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

And if you're someone that uses F@H 24/7/365 then you'll save a TON of money. That power savings is a HUGE deal.

by Echo307 - 2009-08-28 11:42
» Yep

Too true. I picked mine up from my local Gamestop on Wednesday, and aside from the power saving bonus I so greatly wanted, it's pretty noticeably quieter too, and doesn't attract every single dust particle in my house like the old one.

» cvdfvfcdcd

it prob attracts teh same amout of dust... you just can't see it like you could on the super shine of the original.

It's kewl that the power consumption is down so much... but im happy with my 60gb that has the PS2 BC

Nobody uses folding @ home. That's why the feature was removed from the slim.

» @MCS

I can tell you first hand by looking at the map that's displayed when you use it, that tons of people use F@H... and it does still work on the slim, so I'm not sure where you got that info.

Why would Sony remove Life With PlayStation? Oh that's right, they haven't.

Maybe you're getting confused with the Install Other OS option.

I will pick one up a Slim as soon as I can buy a 1TB HDD for it. 500GB is too small, mine's been full for 11 months...

I did some very rough estimating, and if you left your console on 24/7/365 while using F@H, you'd be saving just over $100 a year over the old model. I suppose if you were very adamant about keeping it on all the time and you already had a "fat" PS3, the slim would actually pay for itself over the course of a few years if you swapped up.

Ok, so less than 1 percent of PS3 owners use folding @ home. Who wants to use up the power, wear, and bandwith to leave the system on all the time? I'd rather play GAMES and MOVIES.

» @MCS

Someone who doesn't mind giving something back to the community. I don't do volunteer work, I rarely donate money to any charity, but I see F@H as a form of volunteer work. I'm volunteering the power of my console, and offering to pay a little extra on my power bill.

You're probably right about less than 1%, but that's more than "nobody."

As far as wear and tear on the console, I know several people (me not included), that have been leaving their consoles on all day every day since launch, and low and behold after the 3 years, they're still going strong. F@H only uses a small portion of system power, and the service doesn't even touch the cell processor if I'm not mistaken, just the GPU (help me out here ISO).

Also, F@H uses almost zero of your internet bandwith after it does its original update. It downloads a tiny file at the begenning of each "cell" and it takes between 4-10 hours depending on the cell. When it's done, it uploads the finished result, and downloads another. That entire process of uploading/downloading is over in a matter of seconds.

The idea is to donate. You're donating your consoles life, your electricity, and just a small touch of your internet. Obviously you turn it off when you game and watch movies, but it's just a way to donate something. That idea seems to be lost on you. For someone like me who doesn't do it outside of F@H, I would be pissed to not have the option.

But hey, to each their own... if it's not your thing, it's not your thing.

Some people use it, some people dont. I personally dont use it because I dont have faith in my PS3 to last long if I did run F@H (I live in the desert). ISOhaven is right on his original post... but if you dont use F@H, then no big deal. Unless you want a quieter PS3, then the slim would also be good for that.

by Ricochet__ - 2009-08-30 23:23
» why would it matter

do you people actually care about how much it uses?, i mean most of you live with your parents anyways, its not like you have to actually pay anything for anything, just by buying the ps3 we are going green, 299$ is green enough for me

by ISOHaven - 2009-08-31 03:42
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

@Hush - No, the slim does not attract as much dust because the slim doesn't move the same amount of air. Less air flow equals less dust.

@Mr. common douche bag - Who said anything about not playing games? Get your head out of your ass. I've been running F@H on my PS3 since the day it was released and my PS3 is just fine. As for bandwidth, you obviously have NO CLUE as to what you are talking about AS ALWAYS!!!! The only time bandwidth is used is 1, to download the project which I believe is either 5 or 10 MB depending on the level selected then 2, to upload the results. Bandwidth is not used all day long as you suggested.

It would be a good idea if you shut your mouth about things you know nothing about. It would save other people time from having to point out the fact that you FAILED as people have clearly done in this thread.

Either way, the number of people who run F@H is so completly not the point. Which figures, because you are ALWAYS LOST!!! For those THAT DO, the power savings is awesome.

Only a total dumbass would leave the PS3 on for folding @ home. To date, it has helped NOBODY.

Maybe that's how isoheavy justifies being a worthless drain on society.

Want to help fight cancer? Donate actual MONEY, maybe volunteer or something.

by ISOHaven - 2009-08-31 06:01
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You should have taken my advice about shutting your mouth seeing how you ONCE AGAIN spoke out of line. You obviously have no clue as to the contributions Stanford University has made regarding cures for cancer from it's research program which heavily relies on F@H data.

"To date, it has helped NOBODY."

Only the worlds biggest idiot would make such a comment and gee....look who made it...

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-09-01 04:22
» the point is:

Of all the reasons to get a slim PS3:

New $300 price point

Smaller, lighter design

Quieter operation

Saving money while folding protien 24/7 has got to be the stupidest I've ever heard! And look who it came from....

You are the only PS3 owner that's a big enough loser to care about something so meaningless.

Fact: to date, PS3 protien folding has not helped anybody. It's possible someday, but I'm not leaving my PS3 on to fold protien 24/7 to test somebody's theory. That's why universities get grant money.

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-09-01 06:19
» .

If you wanted to make a charitable contrabution to fight cancer, it would be much more helpful to donate to the cancer society. Spending hundreds a year on power to fold protien is comparatively insignificant. ISOhevy FAILS at turning me into the bad guy here.

by ISOHaven - 2009-09-01 11:59
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

All the reason mr common douche bag is a total FAILURE:

1. I never said anything about F@H being a ONLY REASON TO GET a PS3. In fact I NEVER said anything about it being a reason to get one. As always you FAIL at basic reading comprehension. It's simply a plus for those that run F@H. Do you GET IT YET?

2. I didn't turn you into a bad guy. You already are one. Want proof? Read the opinions of QJ readers in this thread alone. Do you GET IT YET?

3. Nothing you say can take back the fact that you LIED about how F@H works. You LIED about F@H not being available on the slim. All you do is talk out your A$$ and consistently make claims that are false. Do you GET IT YET?

4. I make yearly contributions to various cancer societies you good for nothing POS. As well as partake in the annual 3 day walk for breast cancer. Do you GET IT YET?

5. There are pills available TODAY for Alzheimers thanks to the research Stanford University has performed. ONCE AGAIN YOU HAVE SPOKEN OUT OF LINE and have completely acted like a total jackass. Do you GET IT YET?

That little FACT you tried to give is nothing but your normal BS lies.

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-09-01 12:31
» .

No , no, and no. If you look up the project, you would realize how little has been learned. After 10 years, it has only simulated 5-10 microseconds of protien folding. Divide by the Number of ps3s and other computeers, then that's your contribution.

Also no, you don't give anything significant to charity, except power usage. You are too greedy and selfish. You are truly an angry person, with years of built up hatred. After reading the last post, it seems it's easy to bring out the worst in you.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but folding @ home isn't the medical breakthrough you believe it is. I'm such a bad man for saying that!

by Mister Common Sense - 2009-09-01 22:52
» .

Don't you think you should get back to your charity work? HA! HA!

This just PROVES you will make up ANYTHING to add credibility to your endless rants, usually related to defending foreign corporations.

For my next trick, I will make isoheavy cry like a little girl.

Nevermind, he already has!

HA HA HA!

Good to see you have nothing else. So lets recap.

Mr common douche bag said:

LIE #1 - "Nobody uses folding @ home."

LIE #2 - "That's why the feature was removed from the slim."

LIE #3 - "To date, it has helped NOBODY."

Go on with your bad self....liar!

» final thought

"That power savings is a HUGE deal."

A HUGE deal, but not a feature. Of couse! Why didn't I understand?

"I make yearly contributions to various cancer societies you good for nothing POS"

The even bigger POS lies about it to add credibility to their claims.

To date, ISOHeavy has claimed to be:

electronics expert (claimed heating coils act as purpose built inductors)

political expert (fox news watching ultra conservative)

computer hardware and software expert (claims wii technical prowess)

military veteran (too much of a pu$sy)

upstanding member of society (opposite, drain of society)

married (no woman could stand this guy)

All lies! Whatever the situation calls for, you know who is the expert! No other opinions will be tolerated! He has total BS knowledge!

You sir, are a FRAUD.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

electronics expert - Yeah, and? Computers are my life, that includes hardware and software. However, I NEVER claimed to be an expert. That was YOU who claimed to have graduated from the TOP technical school of all time. Once again you have LIED to save your own face.

political expert - Nope, I never claimed to be a political expert and I do not watch fox news. Once again you have LIED to save your own face.

computer hardware and software expert - Yeah, and? Computers are my life, that includes hardware and software. However, I NEVER claimed to be an expert. That was YOU who claimed to have graduated from the TOP technical school of all time. Once again you have LIED to save your own face.

military veteran - Yeah, and? I served in the US military. WTF is your point?

upstanding member of society - WTF are you talking about?

married - Yeah, and? As always you have no point.

Seems to me, all this makes you jealous and this is your childish way of lashing out. Have fun with that!
