Moving over to the Aussie side of the PAL PlayStation 3 launch, the news reported by The Sydney Morning Herald mentions that Sony's launch of their 60GB PlayStation 3 units just isn't looking that good. But let's cover the really good news first: Australia's first official PlayStation 3 owner is Danny Zarka who received his unit straight from Sony Australia's Michael Ephraim and Myer CEO Bernie Brookes.

Zarka himself was surprised at the weak turn out stating, "I'm surprised there aren't more people here, I thought the place would be packed."

Zarka was one of 40 people who arrived at Myer's Pitt Stop to bring their pre-ordered PS3s home. Surprisingly the turnout was similar in other venues nationwide, despite the special offer for the first 20,000 buyers who will log into the PlayStation Network.

The Sydney Morning Herald also reported that the 500 other retail stores all over Australia were as "virtually deserted" after they opened their doors at the stroke of midnight. Reports have also come in that in order to keep the excitement running, a few camera producers who were supposed to cover the launch asked people to "fake excitement" during the coverage. A local FM station was also reported to have faked cheers to hype up the coverage of the huge event.

Starting today, Sony will be launching a US$ 6 million marketing campaign to emphasize the PlayStation 3's multi-entertainment feature showcase.

UK Launch

Alot of ppl are not aware that there is a midnight launch or are willing to wait till the morning (especially those that have it preordered)

.

This isn't a surprise, we are a lazy nation :P A lot of people will just wait until later in the day I'm sure. Another reason could be the price. AU$1000 is just ridiculous. I bought both the PS1 and PS2 on launch, but currently have no plans to get a PS3 until the price drops. I know a lot of people who feel the same. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll pull an Xbox. Microsoft lowered the price of the original Xbox by $100 only a month or 2 after release. They had to give out free games to those who already purchased one to stop them kicking up a stink.
