Fantastic news, mates. Fears of Kratos getting the Australian banhammer have now been put to rest - the country's Classification Board has now given God of War III the MA15+ rating, which basically clears the game for release Down Under.

That's right, no censorship will deny the Ghost of Sparta of his revenge. According to GameSpot Australia, the package will be labeled with "Strong violence, sexual references and nudity." With warning in place, gamers won't have to put up with a mellowed-down version and God of War III will remain true to the god-level gore that we've all come to love.

A relief to hear, but makes you wonder how a neck-ripping, eye-gouging game managed to get past the Classification Board. Well, best be glad it did, and just like in other regions, God of War III is riding into Olympic war this March.

less violent games have been refused in australia, so i'm really wondering how god of war III got through, without even mellowing down..

If I were in charge of SCEA I'd tell Australia "go fuck yourself" before I released my game edited. But I guess money comes before whats right and whats wrong.

It's based on some mythology and not aliens.
Also you don't inflict the violence on other humans.....

Australians get to get rated mature games when they are 15. Lucky them I remember when I had to pay some guy so they can get me some rated M games. Though of course cause of the rated 15+ you lose some games and end up getting banned cause of the no 18+ but if its rated 15+ now shouldn't it stay the same even if you gained an 18+ classification? You get a censored GTA if I remember correctly right?

they get games banned all the time because there is no rating about 15. Quite a lot, there's controversy over this as some games need to be heavily censored or not come at all there.

# This has all been blown way out of proportion.Guest 2010-03-10 22:34
This game was always going to make it past the rating boards, and all of this controversy was due to the fact that Left4Dead 2 was censored. Which is an extremely uncommon problem, the last time Australian censorship was scrutinized to this extent was when GTA 3 had it's prostitutes removed, and that was almost a decade ago.
Think about it, Manhunt, Left4Dead, Postal, GTA, God of War 1 & 2? All of these were released in Australia without censorship, yes our rating system is fucked, and although a good point for teens looking to get their hands on some gore, it needs serious work, I mean, teens can work for their R-18+ games. So yes, we should definitely introduce R rated videogames, however, that didn't happen, and in the end that's a good thing. For teens at least.
Anyway, the whole point of this ridiculously long comment is to minimize some of the hate which Australia, and it's people receive due to exacerbated bullshit like this. We are essentially America, but less corrupt, and not as big, so yeah, insulting us is like insulting yourselves, kinda'....
This problem isn't completely hypothetical though, there has just been a change of management in the rating's board and the new guy is a total douchebag, which is why Left4Dead 2 got the uber censored out of it. And this guy will definitely be a problem in the future, just don't overestimate exactly HOW much of a problem he'll be, Australia is still ripe for a thorough gore-fucking and we're not gonna' be left high and dry anytime soon.

Yeah, but there's generally a way to get around this problem (of censorship). What, you REALLY think *my* Australian PAL Manhunt 2 (on the Wii) is censored? Nope. And even after that, I found myself lazy to the point that I didn't wish to hack GTAIV.. I also didn't wish to pay $99AUD for it (PC version) at the time, so I bought the same game (still PC version) that same day from India via the Internet, shipped to my house in Australia. :) (oh yeah, and it was around $50AUD TOTAL and still brand spanking new).
