Geohot: Don't update when PS3 firmware v3.21 comes out

Hot off the the heels of the upcoming PS3 firmware 3.21 announcement that disables the "Other OS" feature yesterday, George Hotz fires back at Sony and promises to "look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support". But first, the famed hacker sent out his apologies to the PS3 community and explained his reasons for hacking the console:

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3.

Now you go and remove that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge. You have to open the fucking thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like I think most users expect. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously?

Now on the topic of upcoming PS3 firmware update, geohot says:

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

Same, people who are using the "OTHER OS" Feature are basicly playing emulators from old ass games.. granted i use emulators too.. but unlike most people, i have a monitor for normal PC useage and 32 inch tv i can turn on when i wanna watch online videos/play PC Games on my TV.

sooo i see no use for this other os feature.. unless we can play PS3 Backups.. then yea, doesn't matter.

the reason it matters is because people payed good money for a ps3 with this option included.,
it matters because i like my ps3 the way it is, it matters because i spent $500.00
on the system that had features that was unlike xbox

the other OS is great for emulators and some media playback as well as ripping blu rays.

but if it will unlock full gpu support or more cpu functionality then the other OS would have been vary nice to have. i dont get why sony cares so much all that they are doing is alienating their base and or making a bad joke. i still think that this is a joke since they advertised on linux functionality and they will have to doll out a full refund so they will end up with nothing more than paying people what would equate to more than what they would loose with having a cracked console if it could even happen like the psp is

This update just so happens to fall on April 1st......And what happens to the 10gb of space already dedicated to the other OS? Sony can not remove a feature that was promoted as a selling point. There will be lawsuits if they remove this feature. I purchased my ps3 because of this feature and they can not just take it away.

Sony clearly stated that the current PlayStation Online features will remain free.
Do you understand that? What you can currently do, you will always be able to do for free. Some hardcore gamers want more from their Online experience on the PS3, some are satisfied. Thats why Sony is making it optional to 'Upgrade' your online experience. No one has to do it, but if you love playing online you will probably do it.

Sony is not making anyone buy anything they do not want to.

Kaz said it, one of the big bosses, i cant find the article when sony said they weren't going to remove the 'Other OS' feature, but (and i may be wrong) i believe it was just a Sony representative, not a big boss.

As i said above the situation of Sony beginning to charge for PSN services is a little more serious than this. You said its the same situation, but as i said above (and i said i could be wrong) A Sony executive said they will not charge for CURRENT PSN services, where as a Sony representative said they will NOT remove the 'Other OS' feature, thats completely different, a Sony representative has no say in what the company does.

On the topic of ps3 piracy has anyone even been able to rip a proper iso of a blu-ray disc which would be around 25 gig in size. Let alone decrypt the things... The only things that they need to be worried about getting pirated are Downloadable games. And even then lets be honest GeoHot was making very little progress with a hack that was not a very spectacular. At best it might have given way to a mod chip of sorts that has to be paired with some sort of software. The console to have this exploit used would have to be extensively modified.

Anybody else consider what Sony's doing to be illegal? This is bait and switch. They advertised "Other OS" as a standard feature sold us the product and then took it away. Sure they say don't update to keep it, but you lose functionality of the other advertised items. I get the feeling this GeoHots post was in no way intended for the public, but instead as an indirect shout out to Sony (who undoubtedly follows him now). He has pretty much put the game in their hands. If they force this release, he'll be working on a CFW which is probably one of the last things Sony wants to have happen. If however they play fair, at least they can sit back and find other anti-piracy measures to use that don't piss the users off and he as well as others possibly siding with him will likely back down.

Nobody cares about the "other OS" stuff... And it's not like hackers will hack the PS3. I mean, yes they could, but nobody would buy a BD burner & BDs. For exemple, one single 2 layer BD is around 25$, while single layer cost around 8$ each.

Well, since I buy games after a while (but for some big names), I can say that the last 2 games I bought cost under 10$ (NHL '09 for 7$ and Socom for 3$), and that is not even the price of a BD... And all that to lose the updates, the online network, and more. Wow, what a deal, lol.

Second: where have you been in the last 20 years?

There are/were a lot of other formats, CDs and DVDs only the last few of them. Most of them were expensive at the beginning.

BDs and BD burners will become cheaper in the near future, step by step.

...except that everybody would use an ISOloader from the HDD, which means no costs at all. And most games don't even use DL BDs. A single-layer Blu-Ray blank isn't more than a 3-4 dollars anymore, so even if you use BDs, you aren't getting poor.

Stop blaming Sony. They have a responsibility to their shareholders and to all developers to ensure that their system is as secure as it can possibly be. With Geohotz working to circumvent Sony's security measures, they will undoubtedly have to do something about it. If anyone, Geohotz would be the one to blame for this problem. Blaming Sony would be like blaming a homeowner for building a fence around his house after he discovers that someone is actively planning to rob him and rape his wife.

I know a lot of people are moaning for the sake of moaning, but this has finally put the nail in for me not getting a PS3. Every model seems to be a downgrade from the last, and the firmware seems to be now following a similar trend. I had an idea for using the linux box, would have been a great feature to play with... Seems like I won't be playing Heavy Rain any time soon...

K so my 360 had the red ring recently, but with all expenses paid, 3 day turn around, & a free month of xbox live can't complain. The only feature I remember MS removing was the 3rd party memory cards, which they're now giving the ability to use USB sticks instead.

Can't remember my Wii losing any features at all.

As for the PS3, so far it's lost PS2 hardware support, PS2 software support, SACD support, USB ports, other OS support, didn't they also remove built in wifi on certain models? What next, blu ray and games? Just shows that sony is struggling to make any profit on this console and they're so scared that piracy could break out (and that they'd be screwed).

I don't blame GeoHot, he's done some amazing work on the iPhone and his hack for the PS3 was impressive considering the one thing sony did well on for the PS3 was the security. Fair game to him that he's stepping up to the plate and daring to consider custom firmware and other avenues as a way of saying sorry for leading sony to make this decision and a big FU to sony in general.

The thing with this is that sony may have lead to their own demise, a custom firmware, once done could lead to anything. The piracy that sony is so worried about may now be just round the corner.

And like everyone else, I haven't read the EULA where it surely says that SONY has the right to add/remove anything they like for whatever reason.

I don't like the attitude of Geohot. CFW is always used for piracy. Even if he and a few hundred others use it for homebrew appz, everybody else uses it for pirate games. And he "threatens" SONY now?

And those that say BDs are expensive/cheap. Who cares? Put a 500+GB HDD and copy your .iso (max 7GB if it's also an xbox game, or 40GB if it's a PS3 exclusive game). You only need an .iso loader. Do you think that on PSP the pirates have UMD burners? Use your brain people!!!

I havent installed linux yet but I've always intended to(I'm just lazy).

Personally I wont be installing this update till I absolutely have to, which probably wont be for a while considering the amount of awesome games that came out recently that I havent played yet.

I really hope this is a joke because otherwise its a really low move for sony. So far this gen I've been very happy with sonys code of conduct but this could change my opinion of them.

Man I'm really sad with the "gamer mentality" these days. these so called "gamers" that feel they have to be loyal to their console company even if such company wants to screw them up(aka fanboy syndrome). I still can't find any logical reason why should anyone be defending Sony on this issue. Does this update brings a new feature to offset for the lost feature? No. It is because of the "security threat" that they say they're eliminating? What threat? they don't even explain how removing that feature will help with such threat in the first place. I guess they don't even know what they're trying to prevent. It is because you don't care about it because you don't use it? So what? Just because you don't use it, it doesn't mean you should go and defend Sony on it. You know? You are not the only one using a PS3 on this planet. If you still feel like a deuche then go and join the "Enclave" because "they deserve your unthinking and unquestioning support"

some of you guys have to see the big picture, think about this. its like if you buy a fully loaded car but as time goes by they start taking things off little by little they start with cd player then power windows power seats sound system. lets say you paid for a $30,000 and in time you ended up getting a 23,000 car. I had a an original ps3 that was backwards compatible and now i have a slim that can play ps1 games .....come on. GT2 doesnt cut it. like they said some people bought systems with features installed and now sony is saying you cant have them anymore. Its like selling a new car and saying "oh sorry you can never run your arconditioning or refill with fuel, unless we limit you engine speed because we found a security issue with it." Its crazy of sony and I hope lawsuits do come over this. There should be a petition set up to stop this update being compulsary. I bought my ps3 with other os because I wanted that feature. I paid more for this feature and don't see why they should be legally allowed to remove it at all. Yes just cripple the matchine if you don`t update. April fools joke or not.it seems as if Geo is pissed. He originally didn't want do anything major with it because he didn't want to make it like the psp like DAX. The original people with the PSP scene have left because of what it did. i think i read it somewhere about that geo didnt want to turn the ps3 into that. But he did it to show it could be done and like everything in electronics there is a weakness. Sony removing or joking about it just pisses off hackers. The machine isnt compromised fully yet if so Linux could run at its full potential not half assed like it runs now. TPB when that was cut off from internet the ISP that handled their service was cyberattacked causing 3 million in damages. Essentially Geo just declared war with them. Everything he never intended on doing he will start. Lesson to electronic corporations dont piss off hackers. look at apple with the iphone people jailbreak it so they can make use of the ridiculous data plan by tethering. Data and txt is 50$ a month unlimited T-mobile is 20. Or use it in other country's using a prepaid sim so they dont have to pay a ridiculous amount in roaming. The only thing i would like to see is to play psp iso through the ps3 or put a ps2 function in the ones that dont have it.

What is wrong with Sony lately? I bought a machine at launch, and although it was expensive, I'm glad I did - PS2 compatability and OtherOS support were 2 very cool features now withdrawn from the market.

i remember when sony came out with the ps 3 they said that microsoft war putting some confusion on the market with 2 xbox 360 «arcade ,no disc ,and another with disc.

40 gigs ,60 gigs,80 gigs,then they took out 2 usb´s memory card readers,and no hdmi cable,from the start.

What would be worse for Sony's PR: removing advertised features, or mass public knowledge that their system could potentially be opened wide to miscellaneous hacking up to and including piracy?

The weak security of the PSP kind of killed its reputation with game producers.

I don't really side with Sony on this. If a similar security hole was found with the system's PS1 backwards compatibility (or any other commonly used feature), and Sony chose to remove the feature, the complaints would be coming in ten-fold. Just because the feature isn't used as widely doesn't mean it's not an issue to remove it.

Assume you have a hack thru linux and now geohot even makes a cfw. Now you will sure have to fcuk your PS3 just like psp to mod it. Let's say you do it and the software is up and running.
Now get yourself a T1 line, a BD burner, etc etc etc.
Things you get are "FREE" games, custom themes and old emulators.
If you can buy a ps3 i am sure you can a computer. And install linux on that.

I was intending on using the Other OS feature on my PS3 to install linux, so that I could then install a decent web browser, plug ins etc. This would then hopefully allow me to use ITV, Channel 4 and Sky Player which currently do not work on Sonys web browser for PS3. Sony really need to improve their web browser as it is well and truly flawed. Most multimedia functions on websites won't play and on my PS3 it hangs and crashes frequently when using the web.

So that's two features Sony have gotten rid of. Granted, PS2 compatibility wasn't the best, but a lot of people bought their consoles to use it. Didn't stop Sony from getting rid of it though.

People use their PS3's for OtherOS as well, and now that's gone. So what, Sony? Didn't you go making claims that your console was entirely unhackable? And now that GeoHot has found a way, you act like such bad sportsman and remove the feature? Childish.

Yes, I know that as you created the product you have a right to manipulate it as you see fit, however, as with all of the comments above, it's simply unwise to remove features that you advertised the console for. That's strike two.

Next feature to go? One would deem it safe to assume that we are going to start having to charge for PSN now, since really, nobody can take your word for anything anymore.

You said that OtherOS would stay, after that caused outrage (which should have served as a warning), but you get rid of it anyway.

So how much did we pay for our PhailStation 3? They are cheaper now, but I recall that in Australia our launch price was $1000. Yes, a thousand. For all of this disappointment and false promises.

As with the rest of the PS3 community I am siding with GeoHot on this one, because I believe I speak for everyone when I say we are all sick of your lies and failures SCE.
