Gearbox president talks about Borderlands' gun count

I admit, I did a bit of a double take myself when I heard that Borderlands (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC) has hundreds of thousands of weapons. Of course, most of these weapons will likely be variations that only have a tiny bit of difference from one another, but still, that's a heck of a lot of guns

What's even more impressive is that according to Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, they've actually increased the number to well past the half-million mark. Right now, there are about 650,000 guns in the game, the 150,000 new ones being the result of the addition of alien technology to the game world.

Gearbox won't be showing any of the guns off (apart from what we see in screenshots and videos, I guess), so it'll be up to the players to try and look for them. Pitchford did, however, give a quick explanation for the certifiably insane gun count in an interview with 1Up:

When you have a system that can procedurally generate this stuff, you just want to go nuts with it. The costs are totally different. All the development teams in the world added together can't physically craft what the software we've made is building for us.

You can take all the guns in every game that's been launched on the PS3 and Xbox 360 -- add them all together, and Borderlands still has more guns. It's not fair, because we built the software that's making them for us. We're not actually making them. But it's really cool, because I haven't even seen them all. [Laughs] It's really neat.

Borderlands is currently being prepped by Gearbox for alpha testing. The game has no level cap yet, but it'll be added once the leveling system has been fine tuned to let players just go through the main campaign without doing the sidequests. The game's release has been set for 2009.

» I want the game.

I've wanted this ever since I've heard about it. Plus, I just love Gearbox.

On a side note, you can add pretty much every weapon from every game ever made and it probably wouldn't be more than Borderland's gun count.

I like the idea but the whole "OMG 600,000+ Guns" is really a gimmick. I mean, if (which it sounds like it will be) adding an extra stripe to a shotgun and then adding a laser sight and then a heat reducing layer and then a colored trigger... equals one of those many... than thats really just over gloating for a simple "lego" system.

If they had 6ht+ guns that were all unique past simple things like that then I would be hella impressed.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

I agree with hush404. This sounds like BS to me. Lets do some math shall we?

Lets say a group of 10 people did nothing but model and draw textures for guns. Which is INSANE to have 10 people do that and that only. Also lets say they did 2 guns per day each. Which is again INSANE! Let's also say they worked 365 days per year which is AGAIN, INSANE. They would be able to produce 7,300 guns per year.

It would take them 89 YEARS TO FINISH!!!!

So..how many ACTUAL guns are in this game? I want a real number without the BS.

» ISO...

Seriously, it's not hard to understand.

They have the software that makes the guns for them. It generates them as it will do in the game. They just said in this frickin' interview that it would take a long time if they themselves did it by hand, with the HELP of OTHER devs.

It's not really a gimmick, and obviously it's not gonna be totally unique weapons. But yeah, I want the game not just for the weapon count, but for the premise and plot itself. It looks like a good game.

Do research before bashing the game and/or it's features.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

There is no research to be done. The game simply combines different crap to make a gun. That's BS. None of the guns are unique. Their can only be so many CORE guns in this game.

So my question stands. How many actual guns are their? How many different guns have different firing rates, velocities...and so forth.
