GDC 2007: Mark Rein, Unreal Engine 3, and mod support |

Ó

During the GDC, Mark Rein gave a talk about the ins and outs of the Unreal Engine 3 running on both the PS3 and 360, and what it's like working on the engine in both systems. It was a tad bit in-depth and we might've missed out on a couple of things. Here, as pointed out by Robert Summa of Destructoid, are some details revealed during the tech demo that we've yet to flesh out:
- Epic Games is working on a feature that'll allow in-game (PC) mods to be easily integrated on the 360 and PS3. They'll be releasing all the tools you'd need to implement Unreal mods in real time.
- There'll be a book coming out to help you game modders, both in retail and online. Rein says they'll also release a couple of video tutorials on the subject as well.
- For Gears of War, they pushed every capacity of the 360 to get the game on the platform. If the console didn't have the 512MB of RAM, the title wouldn't have ever been possible.
- The tech demo also showed Artificial Studios' UE3-based game in the works for the 360: Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia. In Robert Summa's words: "The game was very cartoony and fun -- kind of like a kid's show Diablo."

The cover system made that game not the graphics.
It is entirely unfair that M$ owns that game, that is a game that should be shared with the world not BOUGHT OUT for one console only.
Pretty selfish.
Whatever though ive played it but I still think its unfair. A game like this is far to good to be only on one platform.
Thats microsoft for you.
Hope the money was worth losing respect from a gamer who not only looks up to you guys, but has bought every UT...
Thats life I guess. Some people do it for the respect some people do it for the money.

But your right, it's wrong to keep GoW on one system, it should be shared.
Lastly, if GoW is maxing out the 360 now... I'm a hate to the looks on 360 fans 2 or 3 years from now.

They also said that the game (as it is now) cannot be run on the PS3 because of its 256MB of memory, does that mean if they lowered a few aspects of it to run on the PS3 it would be showing the PS3's full power? No, of course not.

i am talking about this over-hyped average game,a game with no-story,flawed controls, small multi-player with only graphics as a selling point
on the other hand, classic master-peices like shadow of the colossus and okami are suffering from poor sales
i guess it cant be helped with Drones ruling the community, there are more stereotypes than open-minded individuals
i hate to suffer because of these drones
it seems mark rein is emphasizing that gears pushed the 360 to a high-degree of its potential, there will probably be better games but they wont go much further than gears
the trick is to change the [art-style],to make games that look beuatiful through a unique art-style within the systems Ram limitation, and doesnt rely on a real-world art-style which consumes lots of ram
in the end,the 360 lacks a Hardrive in every unit, they cant use it as a virtual ram,it will suffer from ram limitations
well it was an average game so i dont care ;)

The problem with the internet is that people tend to over analyze everything developers say, often to the point of taking things literally. Hence we should be careful how we interprete whatever we read.
Also, we should try to find out what was actually said, because phrases tend to be re-worded as they move from source to source.
Here's the actually quote from that website;
"Mark said they pushed every corner of the 360 with Gears of War and that without the 512MB of RAM for details, a game like that would have never been on the console."
Notice how "pushed every corner" has now become "pushed every capacity". If another website picked up on this story from QJ, they may think that Mark says GOW pushes the 360 to the limits, and may claim that GOW is as good as the 360 can get.
In otherwords, the phenomenon known as chinese whispers.
It would be interesting to read Mark's actual comments regarding this.
Anyway, as you've correctly noted, Cliff has already said that there's a lot more they could do with the 360 beyond Gears of War. :)

Oblivion uses the HDD in the 360 for cache, so it can be used and is being used for the purposes you claim it can not.
The difference with not having a HDD in every console only means devs have to make sure their game can work without it, but other than that, it's no different.
