Unreal Tournament 3 running on UE3 - Image 1

During the GDC, Mark Rein gave a talk about the ins and outs of the Unreal Engine 3 running on both the PS3 and 360, and what it's like working on the engine in both systems. It was a tad bit in-depth and we might've missed out on a couple of things. Here, as pointed out by Robert Summa of Destructoid, are some details revealed during the tech demo that we've yet to flesh out:
  • Epic Games is working on a feature that'll allow in-game (PC) mods to be easily integrated on the 360 and PS3. They'll be releasing all the tools you'd need to implement Unreal mods in real time.
  • There'll be a book coming out to help you game modders, both in retail and online. Rein says they'll also release a couple of video tutorials on the subject as well.
  • For Gears of War, they pushed every capacity of the 360 to get the game on the platform. If the console didn't have the 512MB of RAM, the title wouldn't have ever been possible.
  • The tech demo also showed Artificial Studios' UE3-based game in the works for the 360: Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia. In Robert Summa's words: "The game was very cartoony and fun -- kind of like a kid's show Diablo."
Looks like Epic's got their hands firmly around the bull's horns. Their Unreal Engine 3 is here to stay, and they're going to make sure that it's going to be beneficial for everyone concerned.

No offense to Mark Rein but all you would have to do is lower the poly count and the textures and that game could have been on any platform.

The cover system made that game not the graphics.

It is entirely unfair that M$ owns that game, that is a game that should be shared with the world not BOUGHT OUT for one console only.

Pretty selfish.

Whatever though ive played it but I still think its unfair. A game like this is far to good to be only on one platform.

Thats microsoft for you.

Hope the money was worth losing respect from a gamer who not only looks up to you guys, but has bought every UT...

Thats life I guess. Some people do it for the respect some people do it for the money.

I swear Epic said a while back that they just touched the tip of the iceberg with the 360. Now they are pushing it to the limits? What the hell are they trying to say??

Yes, MS has the moolas and it's really the only reason they're still here. Look at their hits... halo... by bungie... who MS bought, fable... again MS bought the dev team, uhh lets see, perfect dark? rare! oops, bought by MS.. hmm, there's itagaki and his doa games! ah wait... I'm pretty sure that guy likes his money too.

But your right, it's wrong to keep GoW on one system, it should be shared.

Lastly, if GoW is maxing out the 360 now... I'm a hate to the looks on 360 fans 2 or 3 years from now.

Please don't comment on things you don't understand whatsoever. They never once said they reached the "max performance", only that they "pushed every capacity". This means they made it run the best THEY could do, not the 360, since nobody really knows yet how to perfectly code and optimize their game. They said without the 512MB shared MEMORY the game would not have been possible. Memory does not + everything, with proper coding and optimization the 360 is capable of much more on the CPU and GPU sides.

They also said that the game (as it is now) cannot be run on the PS3 because of its 256MB of memory, does that mean if they lowered a few aspects of it to run on the PS3 it would be showing the PS3's full power? No, of course not.

# this is the outcome of a world filled with fools and drones..Guest 2007-03-08 23:40
it truly greifs, but what can we do when narrow-minded people are the major constituent of the community

i am talking about this over-hyped average game,a game with no-story,flawed controls, small multi-player with only graphics as a selling point

on the other hand, classic master-peices like shadow of the colossus and okami are suffering from poor sales

i guess it cant be helped with Drones ruling the community, there are more stereotypes than open-minded individuals

i hate to suffer because of these drones

it seems mark rein is emphasizing that gears pushed the 360 to a high-degree of its potential, there will probably be better games but they wont go much further than gears

the trick is to change the [art-style],to make games that look beuatiful through a unique art-style within the systems Ram limitation, and doesnt rely on a real-world art-style which consumes lots of ram

in the end,the 360 lacks a Hardrive in every unit, they cant use it as a virtual ram,it will suffer from ram limitations

well it was an average game so i dont care ;)

# ok,Guest 2007-03-09 00:06
well if that is what they meant, then they should not have worded it as "pushed every capacity of the 360". That does mean that the machine is pushed to its fullest capacity. They probably did not mean it like that, but there is no need to get so pissed by stupid stuff. I am not going to bash the 360 either because I know it is really capable, I just wanted to point out that this company said two really different things. So chiiiiiilllllll llllllll

>"well if that is what they meant, then they should not have worded it as "pushed every capacity of the 360""

The problem with the internet is that people tend to over analyze everything developers say, often to the point of taking things literally. Hence we should be careful how we interprete whatever we read.

Also, we should try to find out what was actually said, because phrases tend to be re-worded as they move from source to source.

Here's the actually quote from that website;

"Mark said they pushed every corner of the 360 with Gears of War and that without the 512MB of RAM for details, a game like that would have never been on the console."

Notice how "pushed every corner" has now become "pushed every capacity". If another website picked up on this story from QJ, they may think that Mark says GOW pushes the 360 to the limits, and may claim that GOW is as good as the 360 can get.

In otherwords, the phenomenon known as chinese whispers.

It would be interesting to read Mark's actual comments regarding this.

Anyway, as you've correctly noted, Cliff has already said that there's a lot more they could do with the 360 beyond Gears of War. :)

# The HDD is not an issue.Guest 2007-03-09 00:52
"in the end,the 360 lacks a Hardrive in every unit, they cant use it as a virtual ram,it will suffer from ram limitations"

Oblivion uses the HDD in the 360 for cache, so it can be used and is being used for the purposes you claim it can not.

The difference with not having a HDD in every console only means devs have to make sure their game can work without it, but other than that, it's no different.
