GDC 09: Sony: make games exclusive for PSN, we'll fund you; launches The Pub Fund

Interesting, but hopefully not sneaky. Really curious, this one is. Sony seems to have been bit by a rather strange generosity bug, launching a new scheme that's meant to lure developers into creating more games for the PlayStation Network. Not just any devs, but indie ones. Perhaps they were inspired by the success of No Gravity? That's certainly something to think about.

Okay, here are the mechanics of this new scheme. All that they are asking of is for devs to create games that will come out exclusively on the PSN. What do the devs get out of this? Financial assistance via the Pub Fund. And there's more: the IP rights remain with the original creators.

Chris Eden explained at the GDC,

A really important thing to point out is that this is not first-party publishing, this is not Sony buying your product. You'll be the publisher, you'll own the IP, and you'll control your product. This is assisting you to make your next step from developer to publisher.

First to be developed under the Pub Fund system is Burn Zombie Burn, an arcade shooter game from doublesix studios in Britain. All in all, this is sounding like a really great idea from Sony. It's an X-deal where everyone involved can benefit from. Developers get exposure and expand their portfolio, while Sony delivers on games that are exclusive to them.

If you guys want to check this out, then you'd want to make contact via this email address: devrel-scea@playstation.sony.com. And not to be negative about this, but just make sure you read the fine print of the agreement, okay. Still, good idea right there.

» hmm

i think Sony wants to be like Apple with the apps store. that's what they need to do. mini games with nice graphics to snack on. :)

» good

I like it. Good for Sony. Maybe they can do something like this for 3rd party major releases as well. Maybe not meet them halfway, but part of it.

» Yea...

I see a lot of homebrew games getting some polishing up to try and capitalize on this opportunity. Really, as much as people ***** about sony screwing everything up, this is an excellent idea/way for them to build off of the homebrew community. Which is what everyone on here has been begging sony to do forever anyway...

This must be the smartest thing I've heard in the gaming industry for months, maybe even years. Licensed private (homebrew-like) games for the PSN, payed for by Sony themselves!

» awsome

I've been saying sony was going to do this since the psp got the PSN. Their is so much homebrew out there that would boost sony's systems. I wonder if people can pitch some of these apps like the ability to read PDF on the psp and sell them on the PSN? I'm definitely going to look into the specifics of this.

its a simple strategy. you make we pay.

i always knew PSN is going to be like POPCAP games.

PSN will have a slew of fun small titles, they make money you know, almost equaling the triple A 3rd party games sometimes. sony just wants a piece of the casual gaming pie. there is totally no wrong in it until they overflow the games market with it and triple A 3rd party game devs starts following and left hardcore gamers with less games to choose from (ex. all nintendo consoles specially Wii).
