FW 3.30 added remote play for future VAIO PCs

Ó

rpGoing through the system update the other day, Sony told us that the new firmware added Trophy-sorting features, as well as preparation for 3D gaming. Add this to the list of what Sony does to your PS3 under the radar - it seems they've added remote play support for future VAIO PCs, among others.

There seems to be a new BD Audio Output listed under Video Settings. Support for Direct and Bitstream have apparently been added. But the bigger crunch of what has been found so far is the addition of remote play support for PCs. According to PlayStation.com:

You can now select [PC] as an option under [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device]. When you select this option, you will be able to use the remote play feature to operate your PS3 system from future models of the VAIO PC. Details of this feature will be announced on the official VAIO website at vaio.eu/playstation in May 2010.

It's pretty much understandable why they wouldn't announce this addition on the firmware update - the new feature is to be announced at a later date after all. We should get more info on what we can do with it once it's announced.

It's a timed exclusive feature. Maybe it'll work on other pc's next year. Give their Vios a 6 month head start. I would love to use thic on my pc.

What is to stop someone from running a PC program on a PC that is not of the same brand. Only way I can see is if you need some additional hardware to make it work but I doubt that is going to happen.

PCs have unique identifiers. The software may only work on Sony PCs

Yeah, but I'm sure it'll be hacked pretty fast. After all, in the end it's just a bunch of bits being sent over a network.

im sure you need some unique drivers for this that are on the sony pc... it will probably be a fast hack though to get it on all pc's and probably even macs.

I don't see how it would be limited to future models only. If it is software emulation it will get cracked and spread throughout the interwebs for other PCs. Seems like it will be a selling point for people who do not know PCs, but software is never safe.

Vaio computers use to really suck, they were like the Macs of the Windows laptop market, meaning they had slow processors, low resolution screens and integrated graphics, and lower and slower RAM. Recently, they've fixed almost all those problems except the price. They're still $200-400 more than a Dell, Acer, or Gateway with the same specs (Or, in most cases, better)

It seems sony decided tu raise the speed of the BD drive causing harm in the 60GB models, burning the Disc Controller....

Yeah... no. Every time there's a new firmware, people blame it for hardware failures, rather than the fact that their system is getting old.

Actually thats a known problem with the older models. Many of them are affected, even before this update.

Unless they start making Remote Play USEFUL, I think it's unbelievable that they spread this feature to an increasing amount of devices. What you can do with RP is just looking through pictures - everything else is rubbish because you have to stream it, with a horrible package drop no matter what your streaming settings are.

The day they release a RP feature which lets you COPY AND DOWNLOAD the music/movies/photos of your PS3, is the day I'll start using RP on a daily basis.

The update notes states "This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions."

WHERE IS OTHER OS, THEN?

Sony has become the new Microsoft, removing features from their products.
