Funny Ken Kutaragi Quotes: a fan-boy litmus test |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Asia, Ken Kutaragi, Microsoft, playstation 3 updates, Sony, Supercomputer
If you're going to think that this is a negative, Sony-bashing article, then you've passed the fan-boy litmus test. Admit it: no matter how much we appreciate the console, Sony PR just goofs up sometimes. Moreover, it's a whole lot funnier when the foul-ups come from execs. Here are some amusing bits from the King of the Cosmos himself, Ken Kutaragi (Kutaragi Damacy!)- "The PS3 is not a game machine"
- "Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a Shihan (Karate master), and Microsoft is still not a black belt. Just like with their operating systems, they might come out with something good around the third generation of their release."
- "I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architectÂ’s blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."
- "Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun."
- "This time, Microsoft has stated clearly that it is going after PlayStation. However, they're going not after the PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation 2. They were looking at 2, and that's why Xbox 360 became like that."
- "With the PS3, our intentions have been to create a machine with supercomputer calculation capabilities for home entertainment."
- PS3 is "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."
- "The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline."
- "Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology."
- "WeÂ’re not going to equip the PS3 with a HDD by default, because no matter how much capacity we put in it, it wonÂ’t be enough."
Though sold as a game console, what will in fact enter the home is a Cell-based computer. ...The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: servers around the world form one virtual 'computer,' and each PC accesses it. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. The Cell processor will completely change the concept of programming. I am sure that a technology revolution is about to occur, not only within Sony but throughout the digital consumer electronics industry.
Yeah, its not really funny. In fact, the quote is actually a bit serious and is quite informative about the power of the Cell processor. However, as interesting as Cell-induced paradigm-shifts in programming are, the bit that really really grabs hold of your brain and squashes it into grey mush is this one:
If processors of high performance and wide bandwidth like the Cell were linked together without sufficient security, a worldwide system crash could occur with one attack.
Here's what this blogger thought: "Am I still listening to Ken, or am I watching an episode of 24?" Yes, this is all in good fun. Self-deprecating humor is healthy every now and then.

Somehow,It seems it Ended to Be true..
The 360 Main Competitor is the PS2...as the PS2 has Already Outselled the 360.
Eventually....Once the PS3 500$ SKU drop to 400$,Conversion From the PS2 to the PS3 will Begin.
Well..Kutaragi....You are Arrogant,But you are Also a Genius Engineer.

Give real Facts not Fiction or guesswork the 360 has well over 10million out there how many has the PS3?.
LOL the conversion will not begin because properly half of those have now either ended up with a PS2 or if they are lucky the next gen 360 or Wii.
Genius Engineer ? hmmm I have seen nothing to prove that on the PS3,in fact looking at the recent news that MOTORSTORM is NOT going to be 60 FPS but only 30,No Rumble in a car game? WHAT,No replay, etc pure genius eh, don't look like the PS3 is up to much when you compare the specs of FORZA 2 on the 360 go compare the two.

heading for the sun is not on anyone's to-do list (unless they wanna die)
he says so much dumb stuff...and "The PS3 is not a game machine" LOL. they sure should market it as a game machinbe to set it apart from the 360 + xbox which use lots of PC components...a PC disguised in a box

Sony is a Hardware Giant....Manufacturing Is their Main Proffesion, and Cost-Reduction is What they Have Been Doing for Decades Now.
Sony Shipped More Units than The PS2 did in the Same Period..Thats Incredible even though they Had the Blu-ray Diode Bottle-Neck
Have you Seen Lair....??..Do you Know that Lair cannot Be accomplished on the 360 Because It is Engineered to Stream Data From the Hdd and Blu-ray Drive...Which Saves an Awfull Amount of Ram and They Managed to Run it at 1080P with all the Vast World,Hundreds Of Object and the Incredible Detail.
Do you Know that RAM is the Main Bottle-Neck this Gen....and that the PS3 Hdd Will Allow Developers To Save a lot of ram,Which cannot be Done on the 360,Since the Core has no Hdd.
Plz.....Think Before you Post ;)

Hello everyone, I am a mother of 5 and it is difficult raising misbehaving children. i recently bought the Ps3 for their Christmas present, and i must say they do their chores and do everything I tell them to do. I would like to thank Sony for disciplining my children

There you go! Any PC, PS3 or 360 can be ported between the 3 systems. Straight from your favorite developers mouth. I told you Broken_Hero.
Stop with this can't be done on a 360 crap, because it can be. It's one thing to say ooohhh look at our cool PS3 exclusive, but don't try and bullshhhh to the public that this game isn't possible on a 360. Your only making a fool of yourself. Anything developed on a PS3 is possible on a 360 and vice versa.

As for Example,a Single Map in Lair is [4GB in Size],The PS3 Has Only 512Mb of RAM,There is No way the Devs can Render the Entire World With This Amount of DATA And Detail So they Use Streaming Technology..
Basicly...Streaming Means as You Walk in the Game,The New areas you are Heading to are Been Loaded,While Others Are Erased While You dont Notice,Giving A Seemless Experience of a Single World While Its Actualy Been Loaded[Streamed ] ALL-THE-TIME.
The Major Bottle Neck in this is the Amount of Data transfer Rate...Which is Decided [Mostly] By the Disc-Reading Speed for the System..
To Put It Simply...The More Amount of Data that Can Be transfared per Second,Will allow Bigger Textures,More Objects,Multipl e Events to Be Loaded[Streamed ] In-real time Without Lag.
Real-time Transfare Rate For Both the 360 and PS3 as Following:
The 360:12x DVD with a Data Transare Rate of 12Mb/Sec as an Average
For the PS3...The Developers,Know ing that the PS3 has Ann HDD as Standard,Can Make Games the are [Engineered] from the Groung-Up to Use the Hdd as a Second Stream..
This Is Different than [Cashing] Like in Oblivion, the Cashing On Oblivion is Used to Decrease Loading Time In Between game Segments [When you Go From Menu to Game,When you Enter into a City..Etc]..the Real-time Streaming in Oblivion is Only Made from the Disc,They cannot Rely on the Hdd to Stream with the Disc-Drive Since that Means that 360 Core Owners Wont Be able to Play the Game..
Basicly..they are using the 360 Hdd as an [Extra],the Game is not Engineered to Use the Hdd,It Only Streams from the Disc.
On the Other Hand PS3 Developers,Havi ng an Hdd in the PS3 as Standard will Have the Abilty to Use 2 Streams:
1)2x Blu-ray at 9Mb/Sec
2)2.5 SATA Hdd [The average Sustained Data Transfare Rate for a 2.5 sata is 34.5Mb.sec]
Check Link for an Example on the Sustained Data Transfare Rate at:
http://www.harddisk.com/harddrive/laptop/st92811a.html
Meaning Developers Can Engineer Games that Uses the Hdd as a [Standard] NOT as an [Extra] meaning if you Dont have an Hdd,The game Wont Work, and will Use 2 Streams:one is 9Mb/Sec and the Other is 34.5Mb/sec Which is A Very High Amount of Data per Sec.

"Beating us for a short moment is like accidentally winning a point from a Shihan (Karate master), and Microsoft is still not a black belt. Just like with their operating systems, they might come out with something good around the third generation of their release."
Actually MS got it right this time. That's nothing more than corporate fanboy style talk. Except for a few very minor annoyances, I can't find anything wrong with Windows XP. Truth is, Microsoft is winning by such a wide margin it's like MS has a whole life bar and sony is hanging on with a one hit kill.
"I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect’s blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."
Is the gate the only thing that matters in a building? The "gate" must be the blu ray drive and despite being in the right location, it will not save the "building" from colapse. The PS3 is not bad hardware wise, but it's everything else that's screwed up.
"Microsoft shoots for the moon. Sony shoots for the sun."
I'm not sure what that means. It was covered in an above post.
"This time, Microsoft has stated clearly that it is going after PlayStation. However, they're going not after the PlayStation 3, but the PlayStation 2. They were looking at 2, and that's why Xbox 360 became like that."
If Microsoft was trying to compete with the PS2 when the 360 was designed, they really outdid themselves because it's putting the smack down on the PS3. Again, fanboy style opinions and trash talking.
"With the PS3, our intentions have been to create a machine with supercomputer calculation capabilities for home entertainment."
Yes I need to go home and do very advanced calculus on this machine. It's definately not that great for games!
PS3 is "for consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."
The only thing that's actually true! Exactly the reason I don't want one! It's simply not any better so why work so hard and spend more money on it? There's no reason to want it that bad.
"The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline."
Not sure what that means. Isn't playing games all day the opposite of discipline?
"Microsoft is trailing behind us, but they are not a threat. They are good at improving [on products], but we will be advancing to the next level with revolutionary technology."
Ha! Not a threat. Is that why you're losing?
"We’re not going to equip the PS3 with a HDD by default, because no matter how much capacity we put in it, it won’t be enough."
We all know how that ended up. I'm not sure how you're going to fill a 60gb hard drive at this point though.
Kaz is the only sony rep with anything intelligent to say, but he too is exaggerating and sometimes lying.

That is completely untrue. This year, yes, when the PS3 has just come out and the 360 has been in full swing for a year, the 360 is capable of playing any game currently out for PS3.
However, if you're simply looking at it from a hardware point of view, the PS3's capabilities are far higher than the 360's. While the gpu for both the PS3 and 360 are similar in power, the processing power of the PS3 far outweighs the 360's. And as mentioned earlier, developers can also count on an HDD for use in a game (though somehow I doubt very many developers will take advantage of this).
I'll give the PS3 another year before you start seeing games that graphically shine above the 360's, and 2-3 before you see games that completely trump what 360 is capable of (and not just in terms of graphics - for example, the PS3 will be capable of rendering many more entities on screen than the 360).
@kevin
Please, go back to school and learn some grammar. And lose the blatant fanboyism while you're at it.

PseudoFacts....My....that is Truly Lame ;)
You mean the Fact that GTA3 and the Upcoming GTA4 is Using Streaming Technology is a "Pseudofact"..??
The Fact that a 2.5 SATA Hdd transfare Data at 34.5Mb/sec is a Pseudofact..??
The Fact that the Average Data Transfare rate for the 12x 360 DVD is 12Mb/Sec
The Fact that Streaming Was Used Because Systems RAM is Not Enough to Contain a Huge Detailed World Like Lair..In which a Single map is 4Gb..??
The Fact that the PS3 has an Hdd SATA as Standard and Can Be easily Used by Developers to stream at 34.5Mb/sec..??
The Fact that Factor 5 is Already Using the Hdd to Acheive the Incredible vast Levels with all The detail...as they Said themselves in the an Interview:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/733/733921p2.html
"The hard drive and Blu-ray can be used to stream enormous amounts of data. All of these things add up to a completely new paradigm "
What Exactly is Hard to Understand..??
When a Less Intelligent Person fails In an Arguement they Tend to Bash an Try to Decrease the Importance of the Others Words....Leave that to "Little Kid" Common Sense...ABC
"I've already answered in part in that other thread"
What Reply....???..You are not Talking about the Way you Used Genji as an Example....if you are Honestly Comparing Foolish-Launch-game Gengi to Lair and Its Advanced Streaming...then i Guess you are No Different than Common Sense
What Is this..???...the 360 Dvd is Fast unlike the Blu-ray so they Dont Need an Hdd....are you Serious..???Its a 12Mb/sec with Non-Constant reading Speed [changing Between Different Areas of the Disc]..the 3Mb/sec Difference Will Make it Faster....Plz
The Hdd will Be Used....It can be Used as a Virtual RAM,Used to Stream Data,as it will Be used in Lair..
The Only Major Problem Right Now is that the PS3 has Just Been Launched and we Have Few Examples or Developers Talking About the Hdd..Aside from Lair Devs
The System is Still New and Considered Powerfull....but as time Pass and Developers Reach a Technological Wall with Limited Ram...the Hdd will Come to Play
This is a Time Issues....But it Will Happen Sooner or Later,Lairs Developers already Said they Are Using it....and Other Developers Will Eventually do..
See you in PART2...if i Ever Have the time..as i am Busy Right Now.

>"The PS3 will Exceed the Xbox360...Not Because of the GPU. Not Because of the Cpu [Which will be a major factor]. But Because of the [built-in HDD of the PS3]"
The whole premise of your argument is that the HDD being standard in the PS3 will enable it to do things not possible on the 360. Your article is supposed to be an example of how this will happen on the PS3.
So yes, Pseudo facts because these as not facts which support your argument, these are just facts which anyone can state without understanding them.
So in that context, let's proceed shall we... :)
>"You mean the Fact that GTA3 and the Upcoming GTA4 is Using Streaming Technology is a "Pseudofact"..??"
Yes when you ignore the fact that GTA4 is also coming to the 360 and therefore at its heart will be the same technology which drives the PS3 version.
>"The Fact that a 2.5 SATA Hdd transfare Data at 34.5Mb/sec is a Pseudofact..??"
And fact that it's a benefit to the 360 as much as it's a benefit to the PS3.
>"The Fact that the Average Data Transfare rate for the 12x 360 DVD is 12Mb/Sec"
12.465Mb/sec if I was nit-picking, anyway.... This average doesn't reflect the way it can be used, since developers can optimize the use of DVDs by specific placement of data. I'll explain.
First, information can be arranged so that the data they want to be read the fastest is placed on the outside tracks. Secondly, if there's unused space, they can add dummy files to fill the inner tracks, hence pushing all the game data to the faster outer tracks.
Numerous games on both XBox and PS2 last gen used this technique to improve DVD performance. Hence those creating iso files for piracy purposes on the internet would often delete anything up to a GB of dummy files from the original game.
So to take the 360, if the devs used the last quarter of the DVD for the files they wanted to be read the fastest, the average transfer speed for those files will be 15.6Mb/sec!
>"The Fact that Factor 5 is Already Using the Hdd to Acheive the Incredible vast Levels with all The detail...as they Said themselves in the an Interview:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/733/733921p2.html
>"The hard drive and Blu-ray can be used to stream enormous amounts of data.....What Exactly is Hard to Understand..??"
Obviously too hard for you to understand!!! They do not say one of their levels is 4GB because of the HDD, that was said in reference to BLU-RAY. Or didn't you read it? They also specify the use of the HDD but not HOW it is being used exactly and where, hence your assumptions. Devs of PS3 games which use the HDD to improve load times can say pretty much the same thing as Factor 5 for HDD usage.
>"When a Less Intelligent Person fails In an Arguement they Tend to Bash an Try to Decrease the Importance of the Others Words....Leave that to "Little Kid" Common Sense...ABC"
Tsk tsk. I come from a computing background, 18 years working in the industry to be exact (first as a programmer, and then hardware support and now managing a large network). Started out in the mid 80s programming graphics routines for micro computers in my own time (mostly assembler), before working developing statistics based programs and algorithms, then I moved onto hardware and network support.
I say this because I know my stuff very well, but even I don't pretend to be an expert in fields I'm not currently working in. So fine, if you want to discuss the use of the HDD in terms of what it can do for consoles based upon what you know, then fine, I'm happy to discuss it. But when you act as if you're an expert on the subject and that everything you say are facts, including why it's a benefit to the PS3 but not so much the 360, then I'm going to challenge you. :|
So many of my arguments come from my understanding of how software and hardware works, including the advantages and disadvantages. It's the same reason why I arg

The Cell processor is about 50% faster than Xenon in theory for floating-point power, the Xenon CPU is 3 times faster in theory than Cell for running general code. So overall, it's going to be about even for the CPUs, BUT each will be better at some games than others.
So you going to be waiting forever if you think the PS3 will 'trump' the 360.
"and not just in terms of graphics - for example, the PS3 will be capable of rendering many more entities on screen than the 360"
Wrong, for the reasons I've mentioned above, it will be about even, where in some games the 360 can have more on screen at once than the PS3 can handle and in other games, the PS3 will be able to handle more.
Sorry to bust your bubble, but they are too close in terms of power for the PS3 to be as superior as you [want to] believe.

>"What Reply....???..You are not Talking about the Way you Used Genji as an Example...."
Why are you acting as if Genji is the only PS3 game which using the HDD for load times? Do some research please. RR7 is another PS3 game (bringing it's load times down to that of RR6 on the 360), and we can expect many more. And once again, I would say stop jumping to conclusions about how the HDD is being used in Lair, the devs have NOT specified exactly.
"What Is this..???...the 360 Dvd is Fast unlike the Blu-ray so they Dont Need an Hdd..."
I did not say they don't need a HDD (and you know it, but nice try again ;)). I said they did not need to copy 4-5GB of data onto the HDD because the DVD drive was fast enough already. So stop twisting words and stick to the facts please. That includes twsiting words of devs like Factor 5 for your own purposes (which is exactly what you've done regarding HDD usage in Lair).
That all Folks!
