Free Radical: Haze not running at 720p - Image 1As the fans may recall, Free Radical had previously released a demo of their upcoming Haze FPS for the Sony PlayStation 3.

While the demo answered a lot of our question regarding how the game will handle, some of the players may have noticed that it didn't feel like it was running at a full 720p resolution (though it was running at fixed 30 fps). It felt closer to 1024 x 576, which falls short of the HD mark.

Free Radical creative lead Derek Littlewood further confirmed that the game will indeed be running at the aforementioned 1024 x 576 res, citing the studio's prioritizing of smoother framerates over visual quality. Ubisoft had previously stated in their game FAQ at the PlayStation Blog that Haze would be running at 720p. As Littlewood elaborated during an interview:

We prioritise a nice smooth framerate over a different res. Personally, I donÂ’t really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty (4), they did the same with Halo (3), and they say with those games 'ItÂ’s not running at true HD!Â’ And itÂ’s like, I donÂ’t care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me.

As a point of clarification, the PlayStation 3 will upscale Haze to 720p, although 1024 x 576 will remain as the game's native resolution. Littlewood further explained that they made the decision near the end of Haze's development.

For the guys who may be feeling a little let down by this update, Littlewood suggests they will want to sit down and play the game first before making any sort of judgment. After all, Haze's experience is summed up by far more than just its visuals. You won't have to wait too long either - Haze is expected to hit the PS3 by tomorrow, May 20. Visit us again in case we run into any further updates.

What are you complaining about?

"And it’s like, I don’t care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me."

I think this is a great way to develop. Games should make fun, not just look good. What's the point if you run Haze 5000p or whatever if the framerate is at 0.1?

I thought all PS3 games were supposed to run @ 1080p native? Isn't that what you were promised?

j/k

Really, if that game looks good it doesn't matter. Sony are the one's that turned people in OMG 1080P FULL HD HDMI GRAPHICZ FTW!!!

great, so it's basically standard def (576 is standard in UK) this is goin gto look really great on my 40" 1080p sony bravia...ithink the devs must have forgotten that a 1080p screen is going to have to stretch the image

No thats not how it works. The PS3 will upscale (not stretch) the game to 720 before it is sent to your TV. Download the demo and you will see.

Most of the current games (PS3 and 360 alike) are less than 720, and scaled up to 720, this isnt new at all.

but as someone said above, it is very funny that Sony thought they were going to be doing 1080p native in all their games and hyped that up to the world.....and now an exclusive game can't even hit 720p

I personally would have liked games to stay standard def for one more gen, and use the extra power that would free up to push more polygons and pixel shaders to make more realistic graphics....not just crisper "ok" graphics....

This sucks!..... This was the top of the cake!!! Im not buying this, if it cant handle 720p!!! WTF is in their heads??? I have a 42 inches JVC Plasma screen, supports up to 1080p! I bought Ps3 because of its HD resolution! Haze sucks!

Get off of HD's *****. The game still looks awesome, so what is there to complain about? All HD is, is just sharper image quality and widescreen. Big whoop.

grand torismo 5 is running 1080p no problem. It just has to do with the work and time it would take to create the game engine
