Fornay radio interview translation

You may have read our article concerning the price of the PS3, after Sony France President, George Fornay let slip the price of the PS3, claiming it will be between €499 and €599, with some controversy on what the price was, due to conflicting reports from other sources in the same day. Even more controversy has arisen today after Sony told Gamesindustry.biz that the french radio interview has been "mistranslated", and "misunderstood". Thanks to Arnaud Dury, now you can make your own decision on the PS3 price information. This morning, we received an email from Arnaud, who is fluent in French, to help us decipher the radio transmission that this was taken from. Arnaud confirmed two things:
  • Fornay definitely said that the console will include a 60GB HD, with no mention of this being optional
  • And secondly, the part which brings a bit of ambiguity to the issue, Fornay did say that the PS3 would cost around €500 - but this was in response to the question by the journalist, who asked "will the console be around $500?".
Here is the text, in French, and kindly translated by Arnaud for us:

Arnaud Dury's translation in english:

Georges Fornay : "You will have a 60 GB harddisk in the machine"
(...)

Journalist: "Players are asking for the console price, we see figures that regularly appear on the Net, $500  according to the rumour. Are we close to the reality or are we getting farther away ?"

Georges Fornay : "Well, listen, if we take in to account BluRay, HD, we see BluRay player's retailing at 1000 euros or more, it (the PS3) will be extremely cheap when compared to this aspect ; and when we look at the game aspect, it is true that today consoles are generally well below 500 euros, I would say that we will be in this price range, it will be costly for a game console and extremely cheap when we look at the technologies it will integrate"

A big thanks to Arnaud Dury for this translation!

So Basically, we are still none the wiser and Sony are keeping tight lipped. It's gonna be more than the Xbox 360, thats clear, but by how much?

If Sony hold the information much longer, it's gonna be because its expensive.

# blu ray won't be all its cracked up to be in the ps3...Vecha 2006-04-06 10:19
It will be just like the dvd player in the ps2 and 360....it'll have horrible playback compared to the blu-ray players that are specifically meant for viewing movies...not games...just wait and see.

And Cell is horrible for games, and not giving as much online power as XLive, that`s a pretty expensive machine. Wont buy it anytime!

im not planning on getting a PS3, but after extensive research the cell is just fine for games if it used in a certian way (basicly making the 7DSP's acting like 1 processor)

and Blu-Ray will be just fine for games, it will just have the same read speed as DvD drives, so the load times wont be that different.

but i agree, they are focusing too much on the marketing potential for a Blu-Ray device rather than the gamer in making an affoardable gaming platform.

*sigh* it goes perfectly with my theory:

Sony is 99% marketing, and 1% Other.
