Chris Deering on the PS3 - Image 1If you look back at the history of the PlayStation consoles, you won't be able to avoid Chris Deering, founder of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) back in 1995. He also spearheaded for the PlayStation, PS2, and PlayStation Portable. He later became head of Sony's consumer electronics division in 2004. He left Sony in 2005 to pursue more personal goals in the U.S.

A living legend in the gaming industry, it's not surprising that his opinions for the PS3 still have a lot of weight even though he's no longer part of the Sony Group (he still maintains associations, though). In a recent interview by GamesIndustry.biz, Deering expresses his views on the PS3.

Deering remains very optimistic about the PS3, relating its current struggles with the ones the original PS console had. Back then the PS was also considered overpriced until the time that platform exclusive games came out and everyone suddenly agreed that it was worth it. With everything the PS3 has to offer Deering says gamers get value for their money. All it takes to get the ball rolling is for an iconic game to come out that equals the effect Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto had during their time.

Although the PS3 "is no longer the wonder child of high tech," Deering says that it's still early in the game. The Christmas season is fast approaching and a lot can happen then. A lot of games haven't come out yet and price changes will surely affect the market.

Deering also expresses the problems Sony had in coordinating its PR to promote the PS3 and how the industry can benefit from seeing new blood enter the arena, but all in all he remains confident in the future of the PS3. Deering ended the interview on a very bright note: "I think PlayStation 3 will be looked back upon ten years from now as a fabulous, life-changing invention."

I have to agree the ps3 is only in its 8 months in. And once we see what it can do when the ps4 decides to come out we will look at this and say Wow the ps3 was very life changing. Showing us the real marvels and upgrades of technology in games.

Its just getting bad press right now, cause idiot fanboys who can't save there money to get a ps3. But have the nerve to line-up at stores to get a Iphone how embarrassing and hypocrites

Yeah you read that part and didn't bother to read about his association: (he still maintains associations, though). Read the fu[king article people. Of course he would still favor sony even though he doesn't work for them.

It's not common sense, it's logical to read the article before posting. freaking retards.

I don't think you have to work for Sony to make a prediction that PS3 could go down in history as a seminal piece of CE hardware. I mean, you can theorize negatively that "In 10yrs, PS3 will be looked upon as a failed experiment that was priced beyond the market and never delivered on the technology promised." But, you can also theorize positively that (with the upcoming advent of Home, and games not yet seen) "In 10yrs, PS3 will be looked back upon as a revolutionary piece of hardware, with a unique processor architecture and UI that changed the way people used CE devices." PS3's Cell chip design I think has yet to be remotely tapped. Whereas 360 indeed has power to spare with the 3-core Intel chip, it is based on conventional x86 CPU design going back years. When Home is released, this could well change the way people socialize online. Xbox Live is an entirely different animal, and (again) based on conventional PC thought. This is my view based upon ownership of BOTH devices (and I think Mister Common Sense only owns 360 and PSP, if memory serves). When you actually OWN a PS3 and start exploring even its current features, you realize that you've never really owned something similar. I know that I haven't, and I've been a longtime CE junkie.
