Folding@Home update: PS3 breaks Petaflop barrier on its own |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: Folding@Home, Noam Rimon, petaflop, SCEA, Sony
Ó
It was only last week when we reported that the entire project has finally broken the so-called Petaflop barrier. It means that Folding@Home was finally able to accomplished more than a quadrillion floating point operations per second. Then comes today's record-breaking news, revealed by Rimon:
The influx of gamers supporting this cause has grown so greatly that we've actually broken a second record within a week! This time the aggregated computation power of the PS3 consoles - by themselves - has crossed the Petaflop line.
The output of all the participating PlayStation 3 consoles in the project now totals 1,020 TFLOPS from 41,145 participants. This is certainly a good day for PS3 owners and we'd like to conclude this one with Noam Rimon's own words, "How does it feel to be part of the most powerful distributed computer network in the world"?

If that doesnt shut the lamer PC gamers up, nothing will. At least they can still dump on Macs.. but honestly, who cant?
And of course, the Xbox and Wii contribute nothing to society.. but what else is new?

All that money went into a game machine. F@H runs when the machine isn't being used.
"I could care less about how good the PS3 is at folding protien. Did they cure cancer yet?"
I'm not sure what the POINT was of your comment. I'm going to assume it was derived from pure ignorance. Because of this research my Grandmother has a pill she can take that "betters" (for a lack of a better single word) her Alzheimer's. It slows it down and allows her to be more "clear headed" or connected with her mind. The end result is her great grandchildren will now have memories of their great grandmother whereas they wouldn't of had this research not been where it is today.
Is it cured? Not yet. But so what? Are you telling us they better cure it right away or never at all? Grow up! They have done cancer patients more good then you could ever understand.
"How many people out there have killers pc's?"
Interesting comment. I like how someone needs a KILLER PC to compete with the PS3. I guess that puts the PS3's cost into perspective! Now take your KILLER PC and add a BR drive. How much does it cost now? Hehehe.
"if this was a battle between the new quad cores and the cells and they both had 40,000 running it would most likely be around even."
Not even close! I have a quad proc and the PS3 still flies circles around my PC running F@H.
However, just wait for 8+ core CPUs to hit the market. I still feel strong that my predictions will be right:
The PC industry is going to rock the console world. 8+ core CPUs, DX10, super powerful GPUs.....the 360 and the PS3 are going to be left in the dust. Sony thinks the PS3 is future proof? There is no such thing! That hardware will be obsolete just as easily as any other. Meanwhile the 360 is on a steep upgrade track. The next Xbox will more then likely 8+ core and will utilize DX10. It'll probably STILL be a step below the PC industry but it will stomp the PS3.
However, this still bring up an interesting point. The PS3 at that point would be so damn good (in it's time frame) that it needs to be compared to a PAST and FUTURE consoles as a standard.

If that happens soon after then the PS3's price justification goes out the window. According to Sony the PS3 is supposed to last for 10 years! Even if it lasts 6 years that still puts a new Xbox on the market LONG BEFORE the PS4.
But, all in all you're right. Back and forth, back and forth.... same old - same old :)

That has to be the most deluded comment I've read here on QJ for quite some time. Well done.
ISOHaven is not the one who's stupid Stealth!, YOU are (I think most people here know that already). The PC already has GPUs FAR more powerful than those in the 360 and PS3, and the current Quad-cores are not far behind for floating-point performance, and far more powerful for general code. Plus there's the memory advantage (both for code and graphics), and greater flexibility, and so games like UT3 will run with higher framerates and with better graphics than the PS3 and 360 versions. But keep deluding yourself if it makes you happy.
So I agree with you this time ISOHaven on PC vs console (I just don't agree with your PS3 vs 360 comparisons from before).

To smokeelaa: While it is true that gamers did not buy the PS3 to run Folding@Home, please understand that in no way were they obligated to contribute to what is in the end a selfless task. And you had the nerve to criticize that? I'm guessing (although I could be wrong) that you are a PC or 360 gamer who, for some reason, finds even something like this offensive, if it is done by the PS3. What does that say about you as a human being?
And Common Sense: About your comment, "Did they cure cancer yet?" - Shame on you. I did not expect you would stoop so low. Surely you recognize that science never advances by leaps or bounds. Any practical progress (please note that I said practical progress - I'm not referring to discoveries or scientific insights by individuals here, which can take place in an instant) is the result of slow plodding contributions by uncounted numbers of people, and can take a long time. Did you have to be so callous just to try and make a statement? I thought you were better than that. Guess I was wrong.
And yes, I know, it is a gaming console, but it is quite a lot of other things as well. If you don't see it as more than a console, please know that there are a lot of other people who do.
Anyway, I know that the above comment is not going to broader your perspective any more than ISOHaven's comment is going to, but I just had to say what I thought was true.
And ISOHaven, although I don't agree with all of your earlier comments (particularly your faith in all things PS3 - referring to other QJ articles here), but this time, I thought your points were valid and well-made. Kudos.

The fact of the matter is, I love my Wii more than anything else.....that almost sounds dirty???
@Stealth
"Just face no current PC nor future will match next gen consoles and thats fact."
Yeah, your comments sum you up rather well!
The only thing that matters is the game. Games will continue to live on in our hearts while the hardware rots in a garbage dump.

OK perhaps the way i said that wasn't the right way, what i meant to say was Next gen consoles(not this gen cause this gen is current gen) Will have superior stuff. Xbox is mainly a PowerUp PC system but on a console, and PS3 is powerhouse Entertainment system with the pwer of the cell processor. Next gen PS4 and If there is a xbox 720 or whatever will be just that powerful.
At one point technology in gaming systems will just blow apart PC gaming. Not to mention to get a great game PC system cost thousands, IE Alienware, but PS3 for $600 you get a Super powerhouse system that has the best stuff for only 600 cheap.
I completely disagree with your last comment. The good games are coming for PS3 and the hardware will be put in great use.

PS4 > PS3 > PS2 > PS
Yeah, that's a given.
"The good games are coming for PS3 and the hardware will be put in great use."
I never stated otherwise. By all means, please quote me.
If you where trying to state that there is no way a PC could complete with the PS3 then you are dead wrong. DX10 is a much more power graphics system them the PS3 is capable of. In 2 years, medium size systems will be completing with the PS3. Yet alone 4, 6, 8 years.

Generally "next-gen" consoles, when they are released, are *slightly* better then the current consumer PC counterparts....but for a fraction of the cost.
Generally their superiority doesn't last long...why ? Because you can upgrade PC's where consoles you are stuck with what you bought.
This is balanced out abit by the fact that developers can optimize for a proprietary platform...but in the long run PC's always win.
Did you know you can get an IBM blade server PC running the 9ghz cell ? Yeah, PS3 AND 360 are already obsolete...let alone "10 years" from now....
The only advantage is you get VERY comparable games to the PC and only have to pay the price of a top-end video card....once...
