So far so good

I downloaded FW 2.40 shortly after it was released and so far no problems. The new features are great! I have a 60gb launch model. One thing I wonder though is really how many people were affected. I wonder if we'll see a new group of people experience problems with the next update. Regardless, Sony will probably make us update if we want to access the Playstation Store which makes me worry some about messing up my system with the update.

I'll believe it when they release an official statement via press release or the PS blog. Don't get me wrong, I hope that they release the fix this week but Sony's tech support is the last place to get legit information regarding things that have yet to occur. When the first FW update came out after the system launched here in the U.S., it took the Sony tech support guy over an hour of asking his supervisors how to run the update (DL'ed from Sony's site) from a MS Pro Duo. They didn't even figure it out, I did. My point is that Sony's tech support is often clueless and is not in the know of things that they haven't been handed their response card for yet. They probably just told whomever called from computerandvideogames.com (the actual source of this article) what they tell everyone that calls regarding something of which they know nothing about - whatever will get them off the line the fastest. What I really want to know is what Sony is going to do for the people who had their out of warranty machine messed up by this update. They should do the right thing and repair the machines for free, especially if as few were messed up as they claim. My machine is out of warranty and while this update did not harm my PS3 a future one may.

I updated my 60gb launch console without issue. My 40gb console didn't get the update as it had been yanked by the time I got around to updating it. From now on I'm updating the 40gb (under warranty) first. The problem I fear is that my two PS3's are different and therefore may react differently to future unknown FW issue's. I just don't want to pay to repair my launch system because of a bug in Sony's FW update.

call me paranoid, but I don't think the update had any problems. more like some desperate xbox fanboys who needed some attention. I haven't seen any videos that actually show the problems of the FW. The same applied for problems of GTA4 in the Xbox360.

this isnt some sort of xbot ploy. thats the stupidest thing ive heard in a while. the gta4 thing wasnt an xbot ploy either. 2.4 was pulled by sony, meaning the problems were real. DUH!

I hope this doesn't break 2.40!

I'm a little worried that Sony might have overlooked the fact that some people did infact get 2.40, and possibly cause some problems for us who did install it without issues. I personally got it, works 100% fine and I've already got 100% of the trophies in SSHD. Also, after the 2.40 update the servers ran like CRAP for 2-3 days afterwards - we get another week or so of this when they release 2.41 =-(

...ok, so someone tries to update to 2.40, and something goes wrong.he/she restarts their ps3 and the xmb doesnt show up. so if the menu screen isn't available, how can they update to 2.41?

This firmware (2.40) has ALOT of bugs in it not just the XMB freezing. There are numerous bugs that I found in the firmware. I would post it on the forums but I was banned from them (this doesn't bother me though since I realized there's something seriously wrong with something on your site and I just wont tell you guys what it is for banning me and scamming me ;)

I know that there were a few REAL issues with the firmware update, but I think the internet blew it WAY out of hand. I have all 50 of my friend slots filled from around the world and not ONE of them has had these problems. Sony just pulled it to stop the very few ps3's from being affected.

As it stands, there hasn't been too many games updated to support the new features so you're not missing out on much (although the expanded friend list and in-game messaging is nice).

I wonder if it is even possible to download an update that would be self bootable to a disc. I don't think Sony would do that though because such a disc may be able to be used for a security exploit or something allowing more people to hack it for homebrew.

ZOMGZOMGZOMG LOL i feel like such a noob. i just discovered something that totally surprised me. when i read this article on the front page on QJ, it had this: "Hit that PS button and check for updates in the full article. We hear that PS3 FW 2.41 will be released sometime this week!" and i'm like huh? what the hell? what PS button? and then i see the image that was used. it's the one with the sixaxis, centered on the ps button. and so i try it out and really 'click the ps button' cuz i'm like oh what the hell, i'm bored anyways. and WHOA. it actually took me to this full article! hahaha! that's crazy! no one ever explained that you could do that?! and so i try it out some more, and turns out that if you click on ANY image in the front page article, it takes you to the longer one, as if you just clicked the read more link! hahaha! trippy. "welcome to the internets, trigger; you're sounding like a noob! a lot of other sites have this same feature! duh!" hahaha. yeah yeah i know. but all this time i just click the read more link because that's what all the bloggers keep talking about. "click the read more link for more info blahblahblah yadayadayada." and all this time you can actually click the square image??!?! If your PS3 has experienced the hanging issue with the wave screen, simply erase your HDD from a PC to gain access to the XMB and update.

GW2 I think your WRONG

First off they pulled because this firmware update will eventually lead to the home integration. So they removed it because they don't need to fall behind any further with Home since it was due to be released in the spring. Now this site isn't the only site that had a few people say that Xbot fans who don't own the system are reporting issues that don't exist. I won't completely sit here and say that the update did not do anything to a few consoles because the reality side says you will have some systems that will run into some kind of error with these kinds of updates. It happens to normal PC users too when upgrading their bios to the new release so its not uncommon. But to sit here and act as if Xbot fans aren't doing that leaves me to believe you're naive to BS surrounding these consoles. I think its petty to do that but hey some people ain't got not life. I own all 3 systems. I prefer my PS3 over the rest any day. I'm the furtherest from being a fan-boy of any sort because its just a damn game.

what other games do you have? Have you had any problems with any other ones. It has been awhile but I think about the only freezing issues I have had was with Motorstorm a couple of times. The internet browser however, I have had it lock up the system about once every 2 weeks or so.
