First Killzone 2 online review gets 4/5, "great enough" but does not add anything new to genre

Killzone 2 - Image 1In the ongoing weekend news drought, the drizzles continue to come, mostly from the camp of Sony's Killzone 2. And aren't we all glad for that? This time, it's an absolute good news for fans of the Sony exclusive title as the first online review comes out, carrying four stars out of five.

Lucky Swedish site GP has finished reviewing the game, and their conclusion is that it  is indeed "great enough", albeit with some lacking elements. Translation of an excerpt from their review follows:

The controls are good and the environments feel natural, raw and uncouth and that's where Killzone 2 succeeds compared to many other shooters; it feels more personal, it's easier to identify with your character and to feel connected with your teammates. Co-op is noticeably missing, which is odd, and Killzone 2 isn't doing much new with the genre but is great enough to succeed without launching for the Christmas Sale period.

We'll most probably agree with them once the rest of us mere mortals get the copy at the end of February. But until then, we'll just have to take their word for it.

» we will ahve to wait and see

although i do agree with the review, no co-op??? would have been a great addition

» i read..

somewhere that they might patch in co-op dunno if its true though

story should be epic, but it the multiplayer where its gonna be at

» Patch

The patch is supposed to come out after the game which will ad co-op, vehicles in multi-player, & bots.

Anyways, I think it's funny that people are paying attention to Swedish sites and trying to nit pick everything they can with Killzone 2 just to make it seem like a bad game when it isn't. Lots of xbots have been grasping for straws lately (especially with the 360's lack luster 2009 lineup which as of this point only consists of PC ports, DLC, & Halo Wars).

» They took off points because it does nothing new?

It's very hard to do something new in FPS games today, pretty much every possible idea has been exhausted. So long as KZ2 has good gameplay that's all that matters.

I'm sure I'll get a lot of crap for this, even tho KZ2 is a day one purchase for me, but doesn't anyone remember Killzone? All that BS about it killing Halo? Came out to reviews of 6 and 7, that Killzone?

The amount of blind KZ2 faith on this site is staggering (not talking to anyone who has commented on this article, just what I've seen over the years on QJ since KZ2 was revealed). I've seen Some people on QJ make KZ2 out to be the second coming of Jesus, even tho they have never touched the game. Don't want to start anything, but never get too excited for any video game, especially shooters, because you're asking to be let down.

I think the only game that ever truly satisfied me was MGS4. I knew that game would be epic, but it was better than that. Epicly epic if you wanna call it that

They gave it a 5 out of 5, but the magazine's trustworthiness seems to have declined after the switch from unofficial magazine to official.

They lower rpg ratings for that too now a days and it seems that critics are very fickle when it comes to adding something new or old. Sometimes they like it, sometimes they dont. Its best to rely on the average of common folks ratings if you look at a rating at all.

» Yeah

Dont flame me but if this was an Xbox exclusive I think it would have gotten 5/5. Dunno why but people are being overcritic with the PS3, while kneeling down to everything coming out on XBox. At least thats how it seems to me.

» hmm

I think most people would buy this game in order to experience the fancy technical aspects of the game. I mean, the graphics are the best to come to consoles yet. Whether or not this game breaks any boundaries, most PS3 owners will still lay down the $60 price of entry. Now, whether it will be a console mover is yet to be seen.

» ftw!!!

i always thaught 4 out of five was suppose to be great and 5 of 5 was suppose to be perfect and theres not too many perfct games out there and they say they havent see anything new what about the first person cover system thats new to me plus all the speacial effects you see at once thats also new to me and i havent even played the game!!!!! cant wait!!!

» I'm really interested now.

It may not add anything new, but if I can have a Call of Duty-esque experience with the visuals and environments that I've seen in Killzone 2 I'm sold.

Not that most shooters have added anything new lately anyway.

Most recent I can think of is maybe MGO's deeper incorporation of Close Quarter Combat and S.O.P, but that game (though enjoyable) needs some serious work done on it.

» New?

How can it even be possible to do something new in a shooter? It's all been done before.

Hell, every shooter to this day finds its roots in games like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Duke Nukem 3D.

Who cares if it doesn't do anything new? It's still going to be an amazing game.

I don't care what anyone says, I thought the first Killzone was an awesome game. Killzone 2 wont be any different in that aspect.

» Hate to admit it, but that's why I want it

Graphics are insane. I hope it's good as a game as well, but for a console game, it's a gfx marvel. A lot of the time I thought one of the latest vids was CGI, but then they showed it with the HUD and everything. Best lighting I've ever seen

Funny tho how even tho shooters are made the most, they are probably the hardest to get right. Take all of the shooters released in 2008 and only a few of them are any good. Hopefully KZ2 is one of those few good shooters of 09
