Now that the release of the Sony PS3's v2.40 firmware update is just around the corner, we're sure that all of you are wondering what changes will be applied as soon as the firmware goes live. Yes, we know about the in-game XMB and trophies, but what exactly will happen...say, if a game you've been playing happens to have a trophy whose requirements you already fulfilled? It's a good thing that Eric Lempel, the PlayStation Network Operations director, published a comprehensive FAQ sheet just a few days before the PS3 2.40 firmware hits Sony consoles in the official PlayStation Blog.
Some of the relevant questions in the FAQ sheet answers the question that we have mentioned above, that is, whether or not a player will automatically get the trophy for a game whose certain requirements have been fulfilled. Sadly, Lempel states that trophies aren't retroactive, so that means that you'll have to do the feat again in order to get that darn trophy.
Also, trophies are tied to a player's PSN ID. That way, there's no need to worry about accidentally losing your valuable trophies if you happen to upgrade hard drives. Another thing about trophies: you can check out your friends' trophies and compare them with yours whether or not your friends are online or not.
On the subject of in-game XMBs, this feature is currently a PS3-exclusive functionality, so don't expect to be able to tinker with the XMB while you're playing Blu-ray movies or PS2 games. However, Lempel did say that they are considering adding XMB access during Blu-ray movie playback, so better wait out for that change in the near future.

So pointless even the XMB (Oh HOORAY MESSAGES)
All there's next genations consoles no longer paying attention to their games. They more attention on USELESS stuff like pictures, videos, music. All I wanna do is just game and online play somebody with a mic

as i lost my gamesaves, and was going to probably dl someone else savedgame for resistance, as i hate to have to complete that game again, its boring
anyway cod4 ill do it with pleasure, ridge racer i havnt touch
gta4 im a bit pissed about, i was on the final island, luckily i dont think trophies for this game will be tied in among the storyline
and thats all ive done now, i havnt started collecting flying rats or anything yet

and im a bit disappointed with the current implication
but thank god theyre at least looking into things
id really like being able to access the psn from other sites, like have it has your sig atleast
id also think the chatting would be good but i can wait for that
its sad they dont let you access the xmb on ps2 titles, but then again i dont play them, so im not that bothered
there was a few other things, i just wish sony will hopefully get this sorted
an i believe they will as theyve already got the hardest part done, the decisions on how to implement it
not they just have to improve which doesnt havnt to be through a FW, eg the ability to see psn on sites
bit pissed about the fact that theyve cluttered the xmb up way too much with things that dont work
like the web browser and visual settings, just remove them from the menu and only include the main things such as
friends and music, that all that way they could redeign the xmb and make it a different simplistic menu all together for quicker scrolling
incase you messing around online and you have to be quick
anyway what id liek to see is shortcuts
ir PS+R1= skip rack
and to access the xmb its a double tap of the PS button

The fact that Sony has waited almost 2 years to implement this and wont even give us the benefit of a one time retrofit of previously played games is just sad. I just picked up MGS4 and have played the hell out of it.. I dont want to start all over, not to mention the rest of my library. I may never been lucky enough to complete some of my previously completed accomplishments in some games.
Most of the game library doesnt even include trophies, meaning Sony has specifically given us a reason NOT to go back and replay our games until the devs release a patch some time in the future, if ever.
Im happy its here and will enjoy its use in the future, but I have a year and a half worth of playing Im not really interested in repeating.

I beat the hell out of my games and now I have to go and do it all over again?
And what about games I don't own anymore? I have to go get them again just to get the trophies?

What is also going to suck is that I am going to have to earn 100% completion again on GTA4, if Rockstar chooses to add trophies.
I understand that people can just download saves, but why not fix the saves that they can only work with the console that they were created on, I'm sure they can do that with an update.

they could also tag the savedgames, let you play them but only give only give you the ability to plsy them and be unable to use the trophies from it, what if it gets hacked?
also DO NOT WORRY, SONY MAY NOT HAVE IT RETROACTIVE, but its because they require the game to tell the ps3 when a topry is unlocked, it cant do this trhough a savedgame
WHAT YOU MAY SEE IS A PATCH FOR YOUR GAME, IN WHICH THE DEVS WILL GIVE YOU THE ABILITY TO SELECT AN OPTION THE SAVEDGAME IS READ AND THE GAME WORK OUT IF YOU DESERVE A TROPHY THEN YOU WILL BE GVEN THE TROPHY
this though will allow cheats again, also the trophys will be timed stamped andmay require time etc to be used a evalution, we dont know

DEVS WILL MAY MAKE AN OPTION TO RETRIEVE ALL POSSIBLE TROPHYS, BUT FOR SOME GAMES THIS MAY NOT BE VIABLE SIMPLY BECAUSE THE PRECAUTIOBS WERE NOT THERE BEFORE

how about sony actually making a move with rockstar to actually fix this ***** instead of being lazy *****s and offering to replace a perfectly good machine rather than actually working to correct the problem that their constant sku updating/changing caused

To everyone whining about the lack of retroactive trophies, they have a very good reason for not allowing it. As other posters have pointed out, there is too much potential for abuse should they allow it.
