Firmware Update: PS3 FW 1.90 goes live in Japan, lots of changes made |

Just a few hours ago, we reported on a rumor about the new PlayStation 3 FW 1.90. QJ tipster, Not A Tad Bit gave us a heads up on the features that are included in the latest firmware update released first in Japan.
The information comes straight from Zoople and Game Watch (so please forgive the semi-Engrish Google translations of the features). From what we can understand from the translations, the PS3 FW 1.90 goes live tomorrow in all other regions and will sport a number of new features like customization options for the wallpaper in the cross media bar (XMB) and fonts. Another interesting feature comes in the form of Home Chat - users can attach a USB keyboard and chat with friends. Playback quality of music CDs also get a level up with a output frequency options.
The other features include:
- Games on the XMB can now be sorted
- Inclusion of "eject disk" on the option menu
- BD/DVD setting now provides an option for 24Hz output over HDMI
- CD music output also has new options for output frequency: 44.1, 88.2, and 176.4 kHz
- Output settings will be available for PSOne and PS2 games.
- Bookmarks can now be added
- Browser Security will be added to the tools of the PS3 internet browser
- Video settings can be changed in-game
- Music settings now include "Bit Mapping"
- Emoticons and avatars are included in the chat, avatars move in reaction to audio in AV chat
- AVCHD type animated pictures can be saved from Memory Sticks

Just to let you all at QJ know, im In Japan with a Japanese PS3 and at the time of writing this comment, there is no PS3 update yet. Ever since hearing this rumor going around a few hours ago, i have been checking my PS3, Refreshing and nothing yet.

If this FW is real, then i'll say i'm really dissapointed with it. All summer long, i have been eagerly anticipating the release of in-game XMB, and apparently it's still really far away. No FW is going to be a thumbs-up from me unless we get in-game XMB.
This should be 1.82b, not bumped to 1.90. Nothing of intrerest... Give us in game XBM for god sake!!! Sony, buy an Xbox360 and learn how to code a good online functionality! Ability to interact with my friends list is the thing I miss most when playing on my Ps3 after using my 360...

Still no in game music or XMB access. Maybe you should fill out another petition? There's still no petition to keep MGS4 PS3 exclusive, so you better act fast! It's probably already too late! If you keep buying those 60gb PS3s in the "inventory clearance sale", maybe sony will have the money to do those things. Prices are being slashed! Everything must go! I'm still taking bets when this latest PS3 sales spike will nose dive like all the others have. Probably long before the 60gb models are gone. The sad thing is sony got people believing the 60gb models are in short supply. They probably have 3 million left. Sony is just like a sleazy going out of business salesman.
Both firmwares come out tomorrow and it says on the site that 3.52 for PSP will have extended compatibility for games via the playstation network. Nothing else.

Actually it would be 1.83 if you think of it as a minor update, which it isnt, its not a major update either so it doesnt warrant being 2.00.
And X-Box Live isn't plastered with adverts?
Just because Xbox Live is coated with adverts doesnt make it any better when it happens on Home. I still think the concept could be cool though, but we'll have to wait and see when it goes live.

Some of those options were availible on the last firmware update! Such as 24HZ, and this "Bit Mapping" setting.

At least Sony doesn't have a few million lemons still sitting on shelves being unloaded on consumers that don't know better. Hopefully in another year or two the flawed 360s will be cleared out of the retail channels so that people who buy one don't get burned.

Ah, I guess that's just your point of view. I'm pretty glad they're going to allow for us to change the xmb wallpaper and finally allow us to arrange the games on the xmb as well. I agree that xmb in-game would be pretty nice, but I think this should do for now.
Why should sony work on an in game XMB when there are other things to worry about.
Mr Common Sense is just longing for the days when noodle arm was still heading the Xbox division. Now that he's gone, he has to take the noodle arm Xbox poster off of his ceiling and wait for the EA pinup to come out. I personally can't wait for this firmware. Finally get to add my own background image. I can wait for In-game XMB until Home comes out. They kinda showed some progress on it at the E3 conference I attended :)
Mr. Common Sense is just a QJ employee getting people riled up and coming to their site and to get people posting. The xbox 360 QJ has someone of a similar attitude getting 360 owners angry. It's pretty sinister, but apparently it works. Surprised no one noticed sooner.

You complain about Home having advertisements... yet it is free, they need some way to make revenue, that way they could continue to provide with such a service at no cost to us. XBox Live however... they ARE receiving revenue. This if when stupid people like you PAY THEM $50 a year for a service that provides MUCH LESS than Home will be offering, yet at the same time they shower you with advertisements as well. Pretty much, you pay $50 a year for a ad filled service that provides you with the ability to pay for downloads and updates. Sorry, I think I got lost at the "pay for the ability to pay while we still shower with ads"... I pay 0$ a year for an ad filled service that allows me to pay for downloads while at the same time provides an Online community and well... a Web Browser??? There is more information on the playstation blog. It's confirmed that the firmware will be realesed within the next few days.

On XBOX live there's only one little area for ads that maybe takes up 1/6 the screen on the marketplace tab. The rest is advertisment free. Since Home will be a 3D world (and supported almost completely by advertising and paid downloads), I think it will be interesting just how much advertising there will be, probably lots. I still don't see what all the hype is about. How long is it going to take to download all this stuff to your PS3? What can you do that you can't do with live other than walk around and look at other peoples' avatars? I guess you can buy an apartment and clothes and other useless crap but that seems pointless. Seems like their time would be better spent making their online just up to par with live.
Sony does that with PSP firmware updates too! Announces "changes" that were on previous updates. It gives people more of a reason to update I guess, when sony has been lazy.

On paper, it's free. Basic apartment, clothes, etc. Just not what you are going to want. All of you will be buying extra crap I guarantee. The whole point of home is so sony can make money to pay for their online, and the've got tricks up their sleeves to encourage you to fork out, while bragging about it being free. Did I explain my argument thoroughly enough yet? Good because I'm done here.
They said don't expect in game XMB too soon, and that it may only be supported on certain games. Something like an in game XMB where you can then message, voice chat and play music is something that you have to plan for and build your entire system around, like MS did. It will be VERY hard for PS3 just to implement it, and you migt see just text chat at first and progressively get all the option, or it may never happen. As is the PS3 XMB uses 64 megs of ram while games are playing....that's without the ability to text or play music....maybe it's just not possible without useing 128+ megs of ram and therefore would be too much of a performance hit.... Obviously if it was a simple addition it would have happened already...like the background dowlnloading...

At least I make a good point, (to those that choose to read it) rather than just come over to call everyone names. Also I need to remind you how worthless sony is at supporting their products, because as a PSP owner I know firsthand. I don't even care about PSP firmware updates, as all they do is add more security to prevent homebrew, when homebrew applications are far more useful than anything sony has been able to offer! The PS3 isn't lucky enough to have useful homebrew since security is one thing sony does well (lucky you), so you're screwed either way!

Please don't tease us with your empty promises. You know that you can't stay away. Home will be free! Some of the services that it will provide won't be free but Home itself will be. I don't see a problem with using a free service to distribute paid content! Pay for what you want to and leave the rest alone! What is so hard to understand about that? THe first thing I'm Doing is buying a plasma and screening "Ichi the Killer" I'll run around telling people to come to my "house" to watch movies every, say wedn. I show all kinds of stuff and people can watch it and we can talk over bluetooth. You on the other hand are a hermit so I'm sure this won't suit you. im a person who like to chat and listen to music in game i have a huge libary on my mp3 player that i can play but only out of game i want to play it whilst im online i also wanna speak to my m8s whilst playing a game like on my xbox 360 its a massive thing and its the only thing in my opinion that the ps3 is lacking under the xbox 360's online features

They already said its coming in the 2.0 update so idk y people are staying in there p1ssed off moods (just wait and it'll come). If anything this update lets me know there's going to be some big changes (in game XMB), the reason i believe that is there living up to some promises (the wall paper thing).

and i hope there isnt one ive done that ***** on the psp and it kills the system that and downloading a 50gb game and burning it would be hard

what i don't understand is why you can change video settings and not every thing during gameplay. who knows maybe sony will surpries us like they always do. but seriously come on if talking to your friends is that important then why not invite them over...or something. i do talk to friends on phone i think its pointless. if im bored i see if i can visit or something. Just checked the System Update. Now 11:12pm EDT 7/23 and 1.90 is available in the US.

Since we are all taking this opportunity to tell Sony what we want, I want to save my Ps1 games to the hdd from the original cd. That would be great, and I won't have to worry about scratching the disk.

i bought my 20gb ps3 on japan launch date! i recently bought a 19" HDTV imported from china, basic brand name, cost only 250 dollars, which luckily supports supports all ps3 video option up to 1080p. purchased a Playstation Card worth 3000 yen and bought Super Star Strike (Dust) HD for 800 yen, converts to around 6.50 US dollar only. i dont plan to use wifi, i have a USB multi card reader, i plan to buy the maximum HDD available later, 160gb as of now which is still small for me cause i have 1TB on my PC. all i am waiting now is GTA4, MGS4, SSF2THDR, FFXIII and those Sony first Party games. Im a very Happy Sony Gamer! and your common senses doesnt compare to mine, maybe its because i have common sense and intelligence! for stupid people: PS3 HOME - is a FREE Full 3D S.N.S. M.M.O. like GUI Software for the PS3 to spice up/enhance the USE of XMB, PSN and all the other features of PS3. The one thing im sure of is MS has prepared 1.xx Billion Dollars for all the Xbox 360 that will have the red rings of death within 3 years, with that large amount it just simply means they are anticipating each and every xbox 360 to red rings. i feel sorry for all you people who are gonna have to send your console away for few weeks while everybody else is having a blast playing games, like us!
