PS3 firmware 3.0, which carries a rather hefty set of additions and tweaks, is all set to go live on September 1. This is a major update, to say the least, and according to Sony's PSN operations director Eric Lempel, it's the last big firmware release we'll see this year.

"This is a big and significant update, so you would be correct to assume that [it's the last major update for 2009]," Lempel told G4TV.

This doesn't necessarily mean that Sony won't roll out further updates this year after 3.0 hits, however. Smaller updates may still be rolled out to improve the experience for PS3 users.

"We try to release updates a few times a year and try to put as much as we can in them and depending on the different schedules and what we have ready at a certain moment, it may or may not make it into an update," he said.

"We do want to continue to evolve the PS3, continue to go along our road map but also listen to what the users are saying and making the necessary enhancements to make their experience better."

can't wait

BTW can someone tell me why I have to keep resigning into qj even though I checked the remember me box. Not only that but everytime I sign in it takes me back to main page.

Yeah, it's really annoying.

Also, I'm actually rather disappointed with this update.

So most of the other updates are what they wanted to do, so now they'll listen to us perhaps. Maybe we can finally get Voice Messaging, Cross Game Chat & more.

Yeah, I have to keep signing in too. Except it doesn't take me to the main page.

jgr, why are you disappointed? :| It's actually a very awesome update, I don't see why anyone would be disappointed by an icon that shows your unread messages and dynamic wallpapers (that's what they're called right? I think...).

Too bad 3.00 doesn't have much in it that actually improves communication between PSN members. Unless they secretly have voice messaging and cross-game chat.

James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing... the cliff jumping stage in this game had to be one of the best moments in video game history.

» All i want

is for the XMB to load and close instantly. thats all i want from ANY future firmware update. we have in game music (games that support it) the video chat is a nice idea but lets face it that would take up too much bandwidth esp if you want to play a game while you have a video chat.

Okay, I'm not sure if you read this a few months back when the statement was made but Sony CAN'T do cross game chat like the 360. Xbox has the rights to the technology. If the PS3 did it, they'd get sued.

I'm having the same problem.

» To Bad..

I won't get to experience the awesome update since my Ps3 just YLoD on me twice after the I did the "supposed" fix! now I just have to fix it one more time and buy me a slim one..

» hmmm

I know from a general point that we would all love to see all models of the ps3 with BC, but if I was the CEO of sony i would take out BC as well. Simply because the ps2 console itself is STILL providing cash money for sony. Its all about the money, why would sony put BC in the ps3 knowing that they can lose money with the ps2 console. I know i wouldn't make that move

» No.

That's total bullsh*t. There's this little thing called "prior art". They cannot patent something that already exists. In this case, stuff like Ventrilo has existed for ages.

by ShinseiTom - 2009-08-25 10:12
» Right....

Microsoft has the rights to cross-game chat...... I simply cannot believe that.

wow, you guys need to start eating more omega 3 fatty acids cause you guys complain, cry, and ***** about everything. *****, i'm happy that they're changing it up and actually putting in work because the way i look at it, i'm getting my moneys' worth.

by truk - 2009-08-25 10:32
» ummm

actually, microsoft has patent cross-game chat, along with in-game music.

cross-game chat was filed oct 2003

in-game music filed sept 2005

That part was BS on the hardest difficulty though. I remember I met a friend I still talk to today on that game's online co-op. Damn you EA, and your tendency to shut down all of your online servers...

» This is way off topic.

But as long as we're off topic, I don't understand why signing in to any page redirects you to the the qj home page instead of the page you're currently viewing so you can post a comment.

Well, I'd still have to say that my $800 was very well spent. :)

if Microsoft owned a patent for anything. Hell I bet you they even have a patent for RRoD.

the new themes are worth this update IMO..

by xInSoMnIaTiCx - 2009-08-25 14:38
» LOL @ RRoD Patent

Microsoft: "We wanted to announce a patent for our wonderful feature of the console the Red Rings of Death. With this, we can insure all gamers to attend this precious moment in their 360's lives time and time again."

Lol.

Aside from that Cross Game Chat would be bliss.

What Sony doesn't get is that it's the SIMPLE things that get users interested as well. They put the option there or somewhat of it because when you try to start a chat while in game Voice is only faded out which has always been a good sign for me.

I'm still waiting on PS2/PS1 support. They said they weren't gonna support the playback but eventually they're gonna have to seeing as PS1's upscaler is the same as the PS2's. Once they fix that I no longer need to care about any other system than my PS3. Lol.

» What they really need is.

A feature where you have to take an IQ and an age test via DNA before you can go online. At least then half the idiots on the system won't be there.

» I am looking forward to FW 3.00

I have been hoping for animated backgrounds for sometime and now we are getting them. I hope they give us an option to let us make our own animated backgrounds to really personalize our systems. If not, I hope they sale some really cool ones.

That's the first game that came to my mind when I read that Ozzy article.

I love that stage. I wasn't expecting a lot from that game going in, but I must say it was EA's best Bond game other than TWINE.
