Finally - the PS3 Slim unboxed

It's been leaked, it's been called a cheap Chinese knockoff, it's been the subject of rumors for months now. Lo and behold, love it or hate it, it's the long rumored PS3 Slim, unboxed and completely legit. Following the massive Sony GamesCom presscon confirming the new model, GamesRadar US takes the new prize out of the box and into your monitors.

One thing that I like about this model is that the top is level with the base, unlike the one that kinda sticks out in the old PS3. There's the matte finish, and the PS3 marking on top that we saw from the leaked images. It's not as drastic as the PS2 fat-to-slim transition, but the big guy did cut down on some weight.

Certainly looks better now than it did in the leaks. What do you guys think?

Check the specs:

I don't know if I should sell my fat and get this, mine is the one with 4 USB and PS2 compatibility.

I like it. I'm still keeping my PhatS3, but I do like this one.

I'm not impressed with the filming against a lit background, so it goes all dark though lol!

by tainogunslinger - 2009-08-18 11:27
» why?

would you sell your phat to get this?

i could see buying this if you didn't already own one, but if you've already got BC then don't trade down man

by Vman00 - 2009-08-18 11:29
» Then you shouldn't

I know it looks good, but it isn't worth it.

It's a sandwich compared to the original.

» Nice

I'm getting one but I wanna see if they over heat or YLOD on people first. Keeping my 60GB too though.

by Deemsjunior - 2009-08-18 11:35

Looks really good..definitely better than the pics we saw of it when it was being tagged as a rumour.

Nice....it is definitely a lot smaller. I am not too sure how much I like some of the changes....I like the buttonless eject and power buttons, I also like the shiny finish better (I don't touch my PS3 much, other than to eject a disk, so I don't worry about finger prints). So I wonder if this makes it smaller than the 360 now ?

Also, the big question everyone is wondering, will this be cheaper ? It also seems like it's going to replace the current PS3 models....notice the box doesn't say "slim" or anything on it.....this is just the new PS3....

by Ozvaldo - 2009-08-18 12:04
» i would give you my ps3

ill trade you ps3 mines the new 80

then sell mine

i would keep the 60GB Phat thats like the best

i have a bunch of ps2 games

there is nothing really new on the slim

just smaller, less power consumption, and 100 dollars cheaper

by Shatterdome - 2009-08-18 12:23
» ...

nm about the price, I read this article before the others

by f31j - 2009-08-18 12:31
» insane pricing

weird....all Canadian shops are also listing it for $299. that's $200 cheaper than current model selling here. also, xbox elite is selling $349 here.

by ISOHaven - 2009-08-18 12:38
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

I'm still trying to figure out WHY THE HELL people are so into PS2 BC.

1. Aren't you done with all those games yet? Gees man, MOVE ON.

2. Why didn't you keep your chiped PS2? Why would you start to PAY for PS2 titles. Just keep downloading them for your old modded PS2.

PS3 doesn't need BC anymore. If you are that hard up then buy a PS2 slim.

by papajag - 2009-08-18 12:51
» @ISOHaven

1.This gen has too many short games. RPGs suck and very disappointing. Besides that there's not that many of them.

2.Because the real games are cheap? I have one modded too.

Being able to play all games in one console is better than plugging all of them.

But anyways they're both PS3s, so selling one for the other is just stupid specially a BC one.

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-08-18 12:54
» ...

Mine is the older 80GB, the original. It has software emulation and, although it plays most PS2 games well, some (noticeably, the entire Hitman series) don't play well at all on it.

@ ISOHaven

The PS2 is still a supported system and makes both Sony and developers loads of money, until it's out of production I wouldn't think of pirating PS2 games. Plus, playing PS2 games on the PS3 offers some benefits over the PS2. First of all, no memory cards needed. Ever. Those damn things get quite expensive after awhile. Secondly, PS3 upscales both PS1 and PS2 games to HD resolutions. Thirdly, you don't have to have two different consoles connected with two different controllers.

by Eclipze_ - 2009-08-18 12:57
» ISO

I agree with you.. I feel like its time to move on. We're already in the third year of the PS3 and people are worrying about playing PS2 games? Thats the feature that will make it or break it for you guys? I mean come on..

I wouldn't mind selling my 60GB PS3 for a slim. Sadly I don't trust my 60 anymore after I got the yellow light. If this performs well with the heat and doesn't get it the light of death I'm considering trading in my Fat for a slim.

My 60GB cost + $599

120GB slim + $299

by your_fire - 2009-08-18 13:08
» lol who would buy a fat one?

i would..its ugly 4 me..i want a shiny thing not something that looks like a ps2..and u cant install linux on it..=(

by TheRockness - 2009-08-18 14:03
» Ever seen Fight Club?

I thought you were literally going to find a way to sell your fat. Make it into soap! haha

by unggoy - 2009-08-18 14:10
» slim?..

looks like the case has been flattened a bit then shortened by length.. this is disappointing.. i thought by ''slim'' it should be, well a bit more slimmer than this.. but i must admit i really like it though.. but i dont like the buttons for power & eject.. i prefer the button-less on the older ps3.. hmmm, how much would my ps3 gonna costs now?.. ive only had it for almost a year & now this???.. wtf?!.. i should have waited.. if only mgs4 wasnt released then i shouldnt have bought a ps3 yet.. f-ck!!..

by Freya - 2009-08-18 15:26
» dang lol.

I wouldn't mind having the slims face cover for my phat ps3

by papajag - 2009-08-18 15:56
» Same...

I don't like the whole shine finish my PS3 has either. It gets scratched so much just from wiping it. Slim has a better cover to me although I still like my phat one.

Also Sony could possibly release a PS3 Slim with backwards compatibility for $349.

» omg... sony wth...

ok honestly who though of that design? it looks HORRIBLE. yea its slim, which is awesome, but its so wide.its bigger than my macbook pro!

also it doesn't have ps2 bc. thats epic fail right there. yea you can say "oh keep your ps2" but uh i don't have one. yea its relatively cheap now but still bc should always be in the next gen console. they can add it back in, they should have the emulation at least. release it as a dlc that you pay $10-20 for.

the slim will definitely be good. its a great price point for the ps3. an amazing value really. its just the design looks really toyish. yes it consumes less power, which i wish my ps3 did (i have a launch 20 gig ps3 with a 120 gig hdd in it currently). its not a buy for me. for my friend, who wants a ps3, it is a buy definitely. just if i would recommend which one, i would say the fat model. why? it has all the same stuff, and just looks more toyish and cheap.

by JSanity663 - 2009-08-18 18:44
» cool

I can bring my ps3 to my friends house now!! my old phat STAYS in the same place no matter what no1 touches it, cemented to my desk. This is good so I can move around with it, and I like the buttons, that touch panel crap pisses me off after a while.

and now the ps3 isn't a Dust collector anymore, that shiny finish, is a dust and finger print magnet

by the by - 2009-08-18 21:51
» I dont like it

It looks very plastic and prefer the george foreman style to be honest, wont be trading either of my ps3's in for the slim anytime soon!

I have to agree with thejoker too, i really hope you can swap HDD's as easily as the fat ps3!

I don't miss linux so would not have been bothered if i had bought a slim, and played 2 ps2 games since getting my first ps3, then never looked back! GT4 looks crap on the ps3 anyway!

by niko86 - 2009-08-18 22:41
» Looks familiar ...

I know what it is, its a PSP battery. That designer must have gotten a promotion for his elegant battery designs

by FreePlay - 2009-08-18 23:38
» FTW!?!?!?!

It makes plenty of sense. Either buy a cheapo PS2 (you can get one for like $40 used) or quit yer whinin'.

by schmidty104 - 2009-08-19 00:59
» i hate one thing

i hate the new buttons for eject and power love my heat sensor ones the cool mat black finish is sick i love how it looks besides the fn buttons..

by Link75e - 2009-08-19 01:18
» keep it

yea i read on endgadget that on the new slims you wont be able to load linux anymore and its not backwards compatible.

by ISOHaven - 2009-08-19 03:34
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

I didn't read a single reason as to why BC is needed.

1. Memory cards? My original still works fine. Why do you have more then one? Do you really need your saved games from 9 years ago of a game you haven't played in 9 years?

2. As for piracy. Whether you would or not, point is, people do. Granted that's a small percentage so even that point is moot.

@papajag - No, it's not stupid. I have a BC unit and I don't play a single PS2 game on it therefore how can it be stupid for me to switch? I'd rather have a unit that uses less electricity and will most likely be quieter.

by BIG_SHOT89 - 2009-08-19 03:40
» i know that guy!

he used to work for PSM back in the day

by Tashy P - 2009-08-19 03:54
» What the F indeed

BC? Do i still play those games? Would you believe me if i said..yes. Ive yet to finish Shadow of the Colossus. I like a game of Tekken now and again. Im playing thru PoP: sands of time. I still have yet to complete or purchase god of war 1 an 2. So when i get them ill be able to play the whole trilogy on one system. Im glad i got the 'ultimate' ps3 lol. Anyone know if the slim has upgradable hard drives?

by ___ - 2009-08-19 07:49
» ps2

chances are if you have any ps2 games you have the ps2 console also so just plug it in.

"it's a sandwich compared to the original."

I don't know what that had to do with anything, but I enjoyed the reference full-heartedly.

Ok so from what ive read, its almost the same as the current fatboy generation of PS3s except.. (not sure how many people use this on there PS3s anyway... I like the feature personally)

"The one feature missing from the Slim is the ability to install another operating system (i.e., Linux)--Sony is doing away with that feature."

by Lifeline - 2009-08-20 10:10
» food for thought

Given the fact it has a 45nm cell i suppose it runs alot cooler, if thats so i wonder if the slim can hold 7200rpm hdds instead of the 5400rpm hdds?

by Fujin - 2009-08-20 16:50
» Ok?

"I'm still trying to figure out WHY THE HELL people are so into PS2 BC.1. Aren't you done with all those games yet? Gees man, MOVE ON.2. Why didn't you keep your chiped PS2? So if the PS2 is not an important console why does Sony still hoot and holler about their PS2 sales and talk about a "10 year cycle" for every console? Obviously this is a marketing move on there part on they can make more profit and have a better pitch... Keep in mind the PS2 is way past break even with every sale, PS3 not at break even yet. So if people are gonna be hell bent on playing their PS2 games and no long have a PS2 but also want a PS3 they will be spending $399 ($299 for slim now)+ $99 for two consoles which ultimately means higher sale numbers and one is more profitable for than the other, or bundle a two-in-one at $399 with less sale numbers and higher production costs? Prime example is how they were boasting their total Playstation brand console sales at E3 this year.

by ISOHaven - 2009-08-21 05:27
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

@Fujin -

"So if the PS2 is not an important console"

Quote me and my use of the word important. Otherwise, what the hell are you talking about?

I said PS2 BC. Not PS2. As much as you say PS2 is important, guess what!!!! They just killed PS2 BC in the PS3. Sure, it's important but:

1. It's not THAT important.

2. Go get a PS2!
